It is impossible to feel disappointed with the infrequency of this channels uploads when the quality of the actual episodes are so high. Between the professional visuals and the significant research, Defunctland videos are so clearly a labor of love
Agreed. The Disney Channel Theme video might be one of my favorite investigative documentaries of all time. Peeling back the layers and meeting all these people behind some iconic but lesser known Disney lore was super interesting. Plus there's that little mindfuck/twist at the end (don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen). With every episode, the quality of presentation and completeness of the final product is top tier.
The trick I've found is to find as many great channels like this as you can. If you find enough, you can always have great content from great creators showing up in your feed.
i love that the reactions to Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln at the time range from "This is a clear overstepping of a line, with this twisted parody of a life that has been well past over acting as a desecration of existence itself. Walt Disney may think he's God, but he's merely a false prophet, puppeteering a corpse to sing and dance for us." to "oh holy shit was that abraham lincoln?"
What floors me is that today the reactions range from, “Dude, I’m bored,” and “waiting in line for something else.” and Abraham Lincoln now looks like someone just bought one from a cheap county fair in contrast to the utterly terrifying Walt animatronic. Something about it looks too clean and unnerving, where Lincoln’s been there and renovated for years.
Its such a common joke every Defunctland video has an extreme opening for something small, but an actual history of the automaton starting back to the ancient egyptians I think is the farthest this channel has ever gone. This is gonna be an absolute classic of a documentary
One of the lesser known stories of the old testament, Bel and The Dragon, prominently features one of these automatons which are being used by the babylonians to solicit offerings of grain, sheep, and wine.
My reaction when I saw there was a new Defunctland video out: "Oh sweet, new Defunctland." My reaction when I saw it was an hour and forty-five minutes long: "Oh God. That is going to be a good one."
Love the discomfort in your voice when you got to aunt jemimah. Was listening to this in the background and was just taken out by the tone, got a real good laugh out of me lol
So I just want to point out: the explanation of sound waves, amplitude, and frequency, is literally the best and cleanest demonstration I've seen. For some reason, when people try to explain these things they get tangled up in abstract descriptions.
So I wonder how far Kevin was in conceptualizing, creating, writing, producing, and editing this episode before Disney announced at D23 2024 that upcoming Animatronic show starring Walt himself? That ending where “Walt Disney will return” and the diatribe on his mortal body failing with resurrection only through the methods he pioneered felt kinda creepy in light of that show announcement.
First off, that intro is incredible. I can't imagine how long that alone took. Secondly, it's great to hear from you again, and with such a beast of a Documentary.
Man didn't know I need to gain an existential dread about Walt Disney and Animatronics, and mankinds bizarre desire to replicate its creator, but here we ARE! Thank you DefunctLand!
Kevin, I noticed you choosing sign wave tones that are in key with the song that is playing in the background so much to the point when you stack three tones on top of each other to make a cord they play the cord that is being played in the song
animatronics are the soul of the disneyland and walt disney world experience. i'm glad they're getting focus again. too many people overlook the parts of the whole that create them. stories are told not just by words, but also by tonality and body language. walt captured all of this in every animatronic.
Like...I remember finding this channel when it literally had only about 4 videos. I'm so proud of Kevin and how far he's come. And to the big man himself, if he ever reads this: keep on keepin' on and Merry Christmas.
I find it clever how Chapter 1 highlights some of the historical accounts in ways that parallel modern discourse, especially in regards to the flautist automaton. The fear amongst artists of their work becoming obsolete, with some criticizing the resulting sounds but finding that the general public didn't take notice...had the process become cheaper or bankrolled more aggressively at the time, perhaps the parallels to algorithmically generated art would have continued.
the balance you strike between genuinely fascinating and thought provoking documentary filmmaking about the history of technology and philosophy and moments of pure comedy is masterful. thank you for this early christmas present, king.
Disney truly has some of the most complex and lifelike animatronics ever. Thank you so much for this incredibly detailed look into their history. This is Oscar worthy.
You never disappoint & your tone changed when you said “Aunt Jemima” 😂. My mom‘s favorite thing was the carousel of progress & going there as a little girl, she loved it. I love that it’s still around today and the fact that animatronics or robots has made so much more progress in the last few years.
39:14 Walt Disney: "We're not going to do Chinatown. San Francisco and Los Angeles already have Chinatowns. There's no need for one at Disneyland." *40 years later, Disney California Adventure opens* I cackled.
I've heard a lot of bizarre things about Walt Disney. "He was absolutely obsessed with building a robot clone of 16th United States president Abraham Lincoln." might be the weirdest. Yes, frozen head included.
Just finished the episode. Honestly if you need to take a break for the next one. You could take a year or two and I'd understand and wait. The fact this quality is on RUclips for Free is insane. I could not write the words that can describe how wellcrafted this documentary is. Loved how you tied the first line with the last one. It's like a circle looping around itself, Kind of like a cam shaft. Amazing work.
Defunctland You inspire me to create Your ability to tell stories, to connect what appears a superficial gadget made to entertain, to the history of humanity's weird fascination with replicating life it's amazing
Finally some love for the animatronics. I just saw the most impressive animatronic at Tokyo DisneySea of Anna being frozen to alive in Anna and Elsa’s Frozen Journey. Such an incredible effect. We came a long way since the 60s.
The improvement in the way you create your videos and combine audio and visual effects is incredible. I have followed you for about six years now and each video is an improvement. You’re at the point now where it’s beyond professionalism, It’s art. I’m very impressed.
Who knew an history of disney animatronics could turn into an immense love letter to human ingenuity over the ages/globe and into a philosophical debate about the nature of life itself and what dreams motivate humanity deep within. Could not have been prouder to call this video one of my top 10 best videos that I ever watched on RUclips, thank you so much for going above and beyond in the quality of this documentary, it was deeply moving, quite fitting given what these automatons were created to do.
I've always loved automatons. I got to see an exhibit of them a few years ago, along with a reconstruction of the chess player. They were so beautifully crafted.
MY FAVORITE ARTIST I showed someone I liked your documentary, and they cried happy tears with me at end. After, she was actually angry that you would call yourself a RUclipsr, and just like me, she kept saying, "This is peak journalism. This is a work of art. This guys an artist! I can't believe him!" I just thought that would mean a lot to you. Now time to watch this video
Literally stopped what I was doing when I saw this dropped. One of the best parts is how this narrative really delivers the experience of “new tech is scary- and helpful? But also can be exploited!” The seeds were planted from the beginning of the history section and it’s sooooo good, really well done. Like most “parks” people love the animatronics and to directly compare them to the aye-eye plague upon us is really great. I wish I could explain better how I feel but overall- Incredible job, well delivered as always. Sooooo excited to see how part 2 plays out and thank you for all that you do!!
I think the parallel goes deeper than most people who pick up on it are going to want to give it credit for. "This is a slight against god and the desecration of humanity in art" didn't take long at all to turn into "the main place this sort of thing gets used is in very niche industrial applications and in theme parks where the thing will exist long enough to make up for its absurd budget" LLMs are a fad. They'll be here for a few years, the bubble will collapse spectacularly when we collide headfirst with the boundaries of the technology (which we seem to be rapidly approaching), and they will be relegated to niche entertainment and hobbyist shit.

Not me being surprised by the cliffhanger to part two, when I already knew that I voted for the video to be split into parts and saw that choice was winning
Absolutely amazing documentary as always. With Defunctland things, I feel like people always mention the gorgeous visuals, which they continue to be here, but I just want to say the sound design and scoring is incredible here. Great job everyone who had a part in it.
Incredible job, as always! As someone who is not the most technologically inclined, I'm impressed by how well the descriptions and animations were able to illustrate how each of the different machines work(ed)-I felt like I was able to understand it all perfectly! Also, this topic seems very timely, considering the conversations we're currently having in society about "AI"-I appreciate how you allow the audience to draw those parallels themselves without directly bringing it up. It really inspires a lot of thought and reflection. (not to mention that there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that were Walt alive today, he would attempt to replace every employee he could with AI the second it seemed feasible.) I'll admit to feeling giddy when I saw that this is merely part one, so excited to see where you take it! Are you setting this up to go in the AI direction, or are you going somewhere else with it? Regardless, I am fully along for the ride! (pun intended)
As a cm at Disney world, whenever I go to Hollywood studios on a free day I always fangirl SO hard when I see the original Lincoln animatronic in the little museum they have there! Such a cool piece of history!!
I'm a huge fan of history, and Defunctland is by far my favorite presenter of history. The only thing that could of made this better is if I would of had a Handwich to enjoy while watch, maybe I will the next time I watch this.
Not gonna lie because it took me so long, but the photo choices for this one are actually terrifying. I was a bit unsettled throughout when I didn't even know why, good job. The vibe of this one is darker.
It is impossible to feel disappointed with the infrequency of this channels uploads when the quality of the actual episodes are so high. Between the professional visuals and the significant research, Defunctland videos are so clearly a labor of love

Babe wake up defunctland dropped

Quite literally one of the gems of RUclips was born today
HELL YES, DEFUNCTLAND DOCUMENTARY TIME!!!

Once the holidays are over im gonna join your patreon. These vids are too good to be free
Defunctland's attention to detail and timeless craft singlehandedly raises the bar for not just online content, but media as a whole
What an incredible intro, the music, graphics, voiceover, everything. Wow
I have zero doubts this will be worth the wait.
Christmas came early!!!!
Defunctland is back!!!!
As a cm at Disney world, whenever I go to Hollywood studios on a free day I always fangirl SO hard when I see the original Lincoln animatronic in the little museum they have there! Such a cool piece of history!!
Like Disney, you very clearly create things that you can (and should) be proud of. Excellent work as always.
To make this about me. I just finished my first semester of law school yesterday and this feels like a very special reward
Congrats!! Enjoy
as someone who played flute for a long time, some flutes would need soft fingertips but you can create that without using human skin...

2024: AI will take over our jobs
A thing of ages
I'm a huge fan of history, and Defunctland is by far my favorite presenter of history. The only thing that could of made this better is if I would of had a Handwich to enjoy while watch, maybe I will the next time I watch this.
Not gonna lie because it took me so long, but the photo choices for this one are actually terrifying. I was a bit unsettled throughout when I didn't even know why, good job. The vibe of this one is darker.
Needed this today boss thank you
