Young John Cassidy is a driven man. By day, he works manual labor, secretly trains in the hills with a band of revolutionaries eager to take Ireland's fate into their own hands, joins mates for a pint, or sometimes enjoys the company of a lovely Dublin lass. By night and into the wee hours, he puts pencil to paper and writes of working-class Irish life. He will - he must - be a writer. The coming of age of renowned Irish playwright Sean O' Casey (Cassidy is a name O' Casey sometimes used for himself) comes to the screen in a colorful and atmospheric biopic directed by legendary John Ford (who left the film due to illness) and Jack Cardiff. Rod Taylor plays the title character, bringing strength and earthiness to his "best role ever" (Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide). A talented cast - including Julie Christie and Maggie Smith - adds to the appeal of a film whose script was approved by O' Casey and based on his autobiography.

Just saw this movie on TCM - Turner Classic Movies (March 28th, 2018). Could not believe that a young Rod Taylor reminded me of Robin Williams. Call it strange, but I call it as I see it! A Great Movie! Loved seeing young Maggie Smith! A classic!
For me is the same. I also think in Robin Williama
According to IMDB this was Rod Taylor's favorite of all the movies he made. Now I have to see it!

If Ford had actually been able to direct it, this would have beenone of THE masterpieces of the cinema.
On another matter, Warner should reissue Night of Dark Shadows with the cut footage and a better editing job!
A surprisingly good film about Irish playwright Sean O'Casey.
Why did they change his name to Cassidy, I know Cassidy is also a Irish surname, but they're different aren't they?
@@MrSchizoid405 I believe the film is based on Sean O'Casey's memoir in which he refers to himself as Cassidy.

I haven't read O'Casey's memoir, Patrick, but Rod Taylor didn't wear glasses in the film as Sean most certainly did.
