Hi Phil. We've "spoken" before. I was on here as Alex Alexon, but forgot password! Nice to be on here again. Hope you're good. Thanks for this review. The original 1984 vinyl version of Take This sounds better than the CD version from the early 2000s - the guitar solo on my fave track, Give You My Love, is far clearer on vinyl. I mentioned this to Mick at his first show with Ian Hunter for 29 years (!) at Bristol in 2003, and he said he'd check it out. It seemed to be a pressing/technical problem. Give You My Love was his favourite track too. The backing vocals there sound so great with the guitar and the funky backing. Cheers! PS Am now able to upload videos on RUclips, and a couple may interest you. I'm putting up the entire Deep Purple Concerto for Group & Orchestra show from 1999 at The Royal Albert Hall, the first one, recorded by me - audio only, but the sound's good for a Dictaphone!😀 So far, the Malcolm Arnold Scottish Dances are up, and the Jon Lord solo tracks with Miller Anderson / Sam Brown, and Roger Glover with Ronnie James Dio. I haven't seen another bootleg of the first night. Have also put up a track from Mott the Hoople's Albert Hall show in '71, plus two Purple live tracks (Burn at Hammersmith '74 and Speed King from Melbourne '84) which lacked bass, so I've overdubbed bass myself (using Casio keyboard, as I'm hopeless at bass guitar.😂)

I can't say I have ever been a huge fan of Mick Ralph's songwriting, but I loved his guitar work for Mott the Hoople, where he was a "play one note and mean it" guitarist.
And he could certainly pull off a great solo - I'm thinking of the one on 'Hymn to the Dudes,' which is one of the greatest solos ever.
I see that you have appropriated the Irish joke about the country type, standing by a gate, asked by a passerby how he could get to Dublin. "Well, I wouldn't start from here."
In Mott the Hoople, he was always more American than Ian Hunter, more country, more bluesy. The story is he left Mott, at the height of their fame, because Ian Hunter couldn't sing his songs, but I would guess he didn't want to either.
Mick Ralphs was very well fitted to Bad Company's style and did everything Paul Rodgers expected of him, I'm sure, but I have never heard of his solo albums.
I went over and listened to a sample of them, but I'm afraid they sent me straight over to listen to Mick Ronson's 'Heaven and Hull,' which I have always heard of as being a fantastic album - and it really is. Check out, 'Like a Rolling Stone,' which fits in superbly with my current Dylanfest.
As you say, Mick had a stroke in 2016, and is still alive and "doing as well as expected." That's really sad for a guy who has given so much to so many.
But I'm guessing you are probably right. I wouldn't start from here.

Mick Ralphs is one of my favourite guitarists. There is something unique about his guitar playing. For me he was the man who carried Bad co for so long. One grudge I have against him is how they all treated Brian Howe, who gave second life to the band.

I agree. He was always melodic, but he had a crazy side to him too, at least musically.

Very honest review Phil. Totally aware of all of Mick's work with Mott and Bad Co but this is all new to me. You have really sold me on second album in the set but I don't feel inclined to invest in the rest. It would be more than I needed regarding my curiosity.

Mott The Hoople is a must! Mental Train Box Set and the later CBS albums are just fantastic!I liked the earlier Bad Co albums kind of drifted away from them so cannot say anything about them!I love your reviews glad I found this on U tube ! You really do a good overview of what you review!
