That’s the unique thing about farming Andy, ya never know what you might get thrown at ya! Yourself and Jerrod and Sarge an the gang are doin a phenomenal job
My favorite job was chopping sileage when I was a kid, Dad would let me say home from school. We had a single row Gehl cutter with 60 some HP Oliver tractor. Top speed was maybe 2nd gear most of the time it was low gear. We thought we really had something, I just can't understand how these new machines can eat that much. Love your videos, brings back a lot of memories
Thanks for sharing. Never seen anyone chopping in the snow, but I've seen combines and balers running in the snow. Couple years back we were trying to finish up 3rd/4th cutting haylege and had some snow but it melted off b4 we could finish chopping. Im sure you're glad to finally be finished with corn silage.
We are in the same boat here in north west Wis. but we have chopped plenty of corn in the snow. Every few years it happens, wet ground late green corn an can't get in to chop it till late, we are having the same problems with ice build up also, not fun, have fun Andy!
18 yrs old back in 1973...800 acres cut it with a 150 hp international ..2 row jd silage chopper..all new ...man have things change except for breakdowns ..but never snowed and that was in mn.
Snow.... Mud.... All slick!!! But you know it's cold in the snow!! I remember years chopping when it was frozen..... Makes for long cold days keeping everything working!!!!
Congratulations in advance for 30k subscribers. Still my favorite channel. I know it’s a lot of work but keep those great videos coming for us couch farmers!
This is a first to me! I've seen guys picking or shelling after it snowed but never chopping! Hope you have better luck with the weather when you are shelling corn!
From the sound of it you will be running combine in snow too. I may be here in CT also. I have 25 acres left of 22% corn but no space yet to put it to dry.
Well now I don't feel so bad about having a 8 in layer of snow on my old gehl 800 chopper on sat the 9th of Nov. That was a first time for that also. It's now Monday the 11 and it 1 degrees where I'm at in mn. Good video Andy!
That was a cool video Andy in more ways than one. First for you guys, First for me too! Testing time for man and machinery. All we get is loads of rain over here at the moment. Enjoyed as usual, keep em coming, 👍done. Stay warm!
Mudding harvest out makes for interesting manure application and tillage. Here in Minnesota we are battling freeze up. Just about ready to be done with this crap this year
its been a tough year here in minnesota for farming too. Couldnt get into the fields till late last spring, then rained about every 3 or 4 days so couldnt bale hay without mold, which would make the hay buyers complain, then this fall the soybeans were combined small and were soft and squishy, now its been cold and many farmers have corn in the fields and 4 inches of frost in the ground so will have to wait till spring before plowing.
Glad to see I'm not the only one with rocks going through the hay head bending the feedrolls all to hell !!! The rock stop does work but not perfected lol.
I'll bet the engineers that designed and tested that head and chopper thought they ran it in,every conceivable scenario , but somehow I doubt they ran it in any snow!! Looked like it preformed pretty well except for the feed roll issue , much better than trying to shell it , cause you know what a disaster that turns into!! I had heard you could use a crop off of the prevent plant acres for forage so didn't work out bad for you !! We had snow here last PM bitter cold wind today ! Hope it straightens out so you can get your beans and shelling corn out ! How many lives does that drone have ya think ? Thanks for the video !
Hey Andy, That's something I've never seen before. I've leveled and packed the silo edges before they outlawed being under the blower pipe back in the 50s. This must be some more manifestation of Al Gore's global warming, the early snow. My Montana cousin Joe said they had early September snow this year. Anyway, stay warm. Hope ya get it done without any grievous incidence.
@@claroibre4778 we used to be in The Silo when it was filling, we would level the surface and walk packing down the edges. Did it with both hay 'n corn. Somewhere in late 1956 or 57 New York State said no more. Something about the atmosphere being hazardous to your respiratory health.

Man those drones are tough and impressive! With a regular RC plane one wouldn't even think about flying in heavy wind or snow, but these things seem to not care about that... Just keep an eye on the batteries, they don't like it cold 👍
With all of the snow on the header it sure looks like you had been out plowing snow with it instead of chopping. What a hell of a growing season your trying to survive from, a wet spring to a even wetter harvest. It had to be snowing pretty good to have the snow build up on your coat like it did for the short time you were out of the cab. Was your brother able to get the soybeans out of the field yet or do they still need to be done? Thank you for today's video, I always appreciate the time and effort you put into them so we can see what your days are like.
Hi Andy from tasmania Australia , is it your farm or family or do you just supervise it’s operation, love your vids Andy you are so good at explaining what’s happening thank you for that and please keep putting them out, chopping in the snow was brilliant to watch from the drone well done.
It is also a fairly early winter. It doesn't seem fun at all to chop corn with snow on. I'm not going to say how much snow we've been getting, but it snows almost every day.
@@FarmingFixingFabricating Well, I'm not a farmer anymore, I'm retired and here we have cold outside but warm inside. What I do outdoors is feed wild birds and run snow blower and it's fun.
The chopper looks like it is going twice as fast in the snow. Now the question is how do you get the silage out of a grain cart? Or is it a silage cart? And then the same thing. But I suppose you just tow the cart back to the bin and make it a slow process. With four trucks hauling no way to keep up unless you had ten carts. Makes the 8700 less functional. I guess.
Great video young man and well done for making these videos its been great to watch! Surely the quality of the silage will be affected by the snow on the crop going into the clamp and then on the clamp prior to getting it all in and sheeted up? I hope it turns out good but it will be six weeks or so before youopen the clamp and know then how good it will be I presume? I buy my corn frozen but its from the supermarket and for me to eat though!
Suppose to be all done chopping corn before it snows. I’m down here a couple hours south of you in Bradford county PA. Everything is chopped, snapped, and shelled, all in the silos.
Andy do you get a little time to decompress a little after a month of chopping/repairing/towing/unsticking/ midnight road calling? OOPs forgot those cows gotta eat!
Brian Brown calls that single row the 'Row of Shame.' Do you still have grain to combine, Andy? I can remember you in the combine on TxGiving Day last year.

Chopper looked cool with snow on it. Glad you're finally finished chopping up there. Nice vid thanks Andy
Thanks for the comment Eric, hopefully we don't have to chop in these conditions again.
I never knew anyone ever used Heat in a chopper Cab! Lol!! Glad you’re done !!!

Your going to have fun cleaning the chopper it will be in the shop thawing out for a week. Great video and stay safe. God Bless

Crazy year everywhere been a long time since we got this much snow here in Southern Ontario 6"
Finished in the snow here in MI also the 6th with a Krone we demo’d. Still have 200+ acres of sorghum and got 5” of snow yesterday
That makes it fun

got to love CNY weather with the snow lol
i wonda if a make shift bar extended out from the chopper a few meters , to knock the snow off the corn , would help with the ice
