I always enjoy watching silage videos takes me back to teenage years when we had cattle. I liked the 8 min mark watching every wagon wiggle up and down as it unloaded
I agree with the silo over the bags that you buy and destroy them to empty. We had Harvester's which some are afraid of the bottom unloader. If you pull them and service them in the off season, you rarely have trouble. Short arm the unloader, that saves tons of issues till you stop getting feed out. You always are feeding your best feed first since your feeding from the bottom. I'll take silos anytime....
I ha e a question about the head on the choppers I custom chopped last year using a 3950 John Deere 2 row and one of the rows I can’t remember what one bit one of the rows struggled picking up the corn the knife would cut it but the grabber chains or what ever they are called wouldn’t Hartley pick it up to feed the chopper it was leaving several stalls behind any idea of what was going on
What row spacing are you on? Been on 30 inch rows here in southern middle Tennessee for over 30 yrs now. Brothers switched to a 3970 with 3 row header this past year, pull it with a 4555 with intercooler. They fill a 30 x 150 bunker to feed Holstein heifers.
Great video as usual....as far as silos vs bags vs bunkers or piles, I tend to lean toward silos myself but every storage method has it's advantages and disadvantages. Silos and unloaders have a higher initial cost and maintenance, but when you weigh in all the other factors I'd say it comes out pretty close no matter what you do. Just my opinion
We used the same outfit when I started working on a dairy in the mid 90s. Thought we had the world by the balls with that 4450. When we got an 8100 we got a 3 row head. One thing that was a real bitch was the anhydrous we ran through the chopper. We were packing the bunker with a 2350 loader. With no cab or ac you got a dry mouth and sore throat.
Do you let it settle and refill within the week. We have 20x90 harvestore just for corn silage if we fill it clear full one day it will be half empty the next afternoon.
What is your guys corn spacing I plant 30" rows of corn for my New Holland 822 corn head I ues a New Holland 790h chopper behind a IH 986 I got a Badger BN 1050 and a New Holland 716 forage wagons
Do you guys run a recutter screen in your chopper? The 3950 I sold a few years ago I had to run a screen, otherwise it would make half dollars on the cobs and wouldn't touch a kernel
Looks like a nice harvest, very good weed control... What did you guys use? Also did you apply nitrogen later on, where we did it seems to be holding the moisture
I learned to Drive tractors with Two JD 4450's. one was a MFWD and the other was a standard 2wd. They were excellent tractors (Very well maintained condition) Great content as always keep up the good work!
thanks that was very good at explaining every thing and intertaining. loved the drone video by slio.there are not used here any more except the steel ones.
I know today most fill the bags cause it's cheaper then silos but to me there's nothing better then blowing corn silage up a blower into a silo. We had two blue ones back in the day, good memories, thanks for the great video.....
I've only chopped 1/2mile straight rows , I think if I had to chop all those curves I'd need to find an old kemper head or I would make a lot of long stubble. thanks for the vid
Holy crap u r chopping for dairy cows and not running a kernel processor?! We started running those in the 1990s! Makes a huge difference in milk production.
iowadairyboys we rented a blower with a processor. It was cheap and paid for itself 4x over. Not to mention needing less feed because cows ate it all. Dairy cows r worse than a high maintenance woman lol. Plus I turned up to 4440 to 4840 hp levels and made that bitch scream. Ahhh getting a bonner just thinking about it.
If your talking about the part where I just started the wagon I did not have it go fast so I did not plug the blower while screwing with the damn camera.
Yeah understandable lol heres a video of me at work filling silo sept I'm in pa and we haven't started chopping on our farm or my bosses farm ruclips.net/video/i2s6GcXS2Y4/видео.html
We still run pull type chopper here in Kansas for corn Silage. New holland chopper but it goes into a bunker. So we have a dump wagon and high sides on 2 grain trucks. Behind a 4960 John Deere. Our chopper has a “keeper” style header. Takes in 3 rows at a time. We chop 160 acres a year. This year as dry as it is. We might end up chopping everything because the corn isn’t going to make anything.

thAT is some nice lookin corn glad you guys had a good crop this year
It was not as good as last year
Do u guys use the preservative tank? Do u inoculate the feed?
I want to move to Iowa and farm and ranch. but there proboly won't be land for sale. do u get a good corn crop?

Nothing smells better than cut hay and chopped corn.

We don't have one
We put a processor on our harvestor. Gained a lot of milk production.
Looks like a nice harvest, very good weed control... What did you guys use? Also did you apply nitrogen later on, where we did it seems to be holding the moisture
180 units of nitrogen applied before planting plus manure

Looking at the width of the chopper head just wondering you on 36 inch rows or 30 inch it just looked really wide to me
36
What do you like more the silo or silo bags
Bags
Getting any juice out of the silo?? Looks very green yet.
some
Hi , I m from Ireland love your videos, just wondering what is that patch of land that crosses your corn field that you ding plough or sow in
I know today most fill the bags cause it's cheaper then silos but to me there's nothing better then blowing corn silage up a blower into a silo. We had two blue ones back in the day, good memories, thanks for the great video.....
Silos are way cheaper than bags
We like bags better
I prefer the silo we have 4 of them sometimes we do a bag but we don't like to
silo unloaders suck
obviously you don't know how to use them then
Next time for any chopping you should put a camera on the box. Like on the right side so you can see the corn
Praise god we finally got the first good crop in ages and very nice video!
I've only chopped 1/2mile straight rows , I think if I had to chop all those curves I'd need to find an old kemper head or I would make a lot of long stubble. thanks for the vid
AndersonCattleCo. An i though chopping straight rows with autosteer was hard enough! XD
What brand of corn do you guys plant
Holy crap u r chopping for dairy cows and not running a kernel processor?! We started running those in the 1990s! Makes a huge difference in milk production.
$
iowadairyboys we rented a blower with a processor. It was cheap and paid for itself 4x over. Not to mention needing less feed because cows ate it all. Dairy cows r worse than a high maintenance woman lol.

your barn may need some repairs but you got first quality forage equip.....Makes life go easier
Do you chop with a screen in the chopper? My brother does, he uses a 35 John Deer with a two row head, but his head is yellow.
No
iowadairyboys My brother has an extra one, I'll see if he will sell it, because it will grind or Crack the kernel which is what needs to happen.
How hard is it to put in.
iowadairyboys It just bolts in behind the knifes, the hard part is getting it adjusted right so it does a good job with out hitting the knifes.
Ok
Wish I had a dollar for every one of those spreader spouts I put up, four one day....Is there a Patz unloader in the silo?
what part of Iowa are guys at
How many wagonloads do it take to fill the silo?
On average 50-80
Nice vid. Looks like you had good luck and a good crop this year.
want to buy a 3970 with KP and green spout with cantilever auger and 3 row green corn head I got one for sale.
Only a two row head?
Nice
great video thanks
Here the Eric church in the back ground
You guys don't unload very fast do ya. Great video
If your talking about the part where I just started the wagon I did not have it go fast so I did not plug the blower while screwing with the damn camera.

Didn't know there were two 4440s. That's just me being clueless again though, nothing new here lol. Is one of them a neighbor's?

I chop at least 55 acres a day
If that the case then why use them ?
Use what
I commented on filling bags instead of silos for cost reasons and someone commented that bags are more expensive and I said why use bags then.
