Sound engineer here! If you want a tip for working on more complex renders/bigger projects where a lot is happening in your animation, the way I learned in school (we were using ProTools mind you) is that you sort of make a “map” of what sounds you want to place where with empty sound clips. For example: your first pass may be looking for places to place footstep sfx. You scrub frame by frame and see where it’d be appropriate for steps, creaky floorboards, shifting gravel, etc. Your next pass may be for clothing movement, or room tones, etc. Each time you just put a blank SFX clip with the exact duration of time that sound would take up. That way when you bring your sounds in, it’s just a matter of dragging and dropping things into place. Then you can do your editing pass(reverb and effects), then your mixing pass(balancing volume between SFX, ADR, music, etc.) It cuts down time you’d spend trying to find the perfect duration of a sound clip that you may or may not even end up using/swapping for another and makes for really sharp editing.
Wow, that's super valuable! A lot of time definitely goes to scrubbing frame by frame for each new sound. Will definitely do this going forward! Thanks so much!
I actually had a quick question as far as sound design goes. When doing all the audio levelling for a video, is there a rule of thumb as far as good volume goes? Like when you're doing your levels, should you check them when your PC/speakers are at max volume? Or should I check those sounds after setting my speaker volume to a smaller volume level? I never know how to go about it when I get to that point.
As an RUclips editor I didn't expect to learn something new for my editing workflow. I love doing sfx but it takes sooooo much time to do something more complicated as you said. THANK YOU!
Blender community has lots of tutorials but I don't know why your channel has a supreme and premium kind of vibe. The quality content you produce is mind-blowing.
Big fan of the fact he could have just edited out the failed double rendering attempt - but decided to leave in because it helps normalise a trial and error mindset
This is legit the tutorial I always wanted from you. Your 3D work is amazing, but a hidden secret to the high quality of your videos is your exceptional sound design skills. Thank you so much!
Oh lord!! This video popped up randomly… Dude.. This is one of the best tutorials I have seen on any subject! You don’t waste a lot of time, you are explaining stuff really well, and you are showing all steps live, with no confusing edits… Very well done 👌 Subscribed!!

You said it that sound stuff are coming and wow. Its very nice to see how your music knowledge is aplied with your visual skills. Thank you for your hard work, tutorials, tips and tricks. The road to 1M followers is clear. Good job and good luck!
Awesome would be an understatement. Of the countless sound design tutorials I've watched on RUclips, this one easily takes the cherry! Thanks a lot man. Subscribed!
@@Polyfjord It definitely works using Cycles-X if you have multiple GPUs, and right now this is the only way to do it (because they do not currently support multiple devices). You do have to configure each Blender to exclusively use a different GPU, for it to work. Edit: note that it is not flawless, I have had a couple of blue screen shutdowns. Save your work!
@@Polyfjord It depends on the scene, but yes, it is significantly faster on my RTX 2080 Ti using OptiX. I got approximately 35% faster renders on a scene of mine. Also forgot to say, you should also configure your animation to turn off Overwrite so that if you need to resume after a crash or something, it does not go back and re-render already completed frames.
Soundly blew my mind, exactly what i needed. Also i just realized this is the same channel that helped my animate a smooth camera for a product video some months ago. Randomly stumbled onto it again, and no surprise - the rest of the tutorials are even more amazingly well done. You have my thanks and my subscription.
I spent an entire day trying to find a video that explains this things and I didn’t find anything. Two days later this appears in my homepage. Thank you very much
15:46 - You can set one Blender app to render using GPU, and the other to render with CPU, then you should get MOAR frames. Although, the newer versions of Blender can utilize both the GPU and CPU at the same time if set to "GPU compute," as long as you enable it under Preferences -> System -> Cycles Render Devices (at the top of the window).
Hello FjordMan! You are so underrated! Things you are talking about are important fundamentals for the advanced Blender users and artists! Thanks so much for sharing this experience to us!
Love how you're not like "let me make a tutorial to post on youtube" but try to make stuff that's actually useful. Can hardly imagine doing sound without using this workflow now.
Thanks very much putting sound design into perspective! I do sound editing occasionally & it's great to hear you point out the 'think of it as an arrangement of words' thing which I didn't think of before. Also great to see how fast you can put it together in Resolve, learned so much with this one video. Best of all, the Soundly tip! You've got a new fan (and sub) here 😊
Amazing! Have been following your channel for years and you have been one of the most valuable creators out there. Thanks for all of this information and inspiration!
This is just beautifull. I am pleased to be adding more tools to my toobox and to think I have struggled so long trying to make my own sounds for my short clips while something like this existed out there. I am crying tears of joy endlessly... A bit dramatic but you get the point.
Multitalented and very inteligent young man. Looking forward to your future work. Already with the smokeman thing it was noticable how versatile and creative you are. Just keep up.

THANKS FOR THIS!! Im about 2 months into my blender/MagicaVoxel Journey and Im really finding that its been something ive loved for years but never sat down to actually work out. That being said I have an Idea for making Still Images and producing 3D Spatial Sounds to accompany them. Im hoping that this, being my first tutorial about the subject, your video helps me take off on the right foot and help me start producing the things in my scattered creative brain! Thank you again!
Hey dude this is pretty neat, didnt know I needed to work on sound design for 3d which I find very helpful for future projects. Can't wait to give it a watch
Cool sound design video! also some tips on rendering: 1) you can increase the GPU load and render speed by finding the optimal tile size for your seen. There is also an auto tile size addon. 2) you can get a bit of a render speed boost by rendering through the console as Blender doesn't have to load the GUI as its rendering. Look up the "Command Line Rendering" page on the blender docs
