Excellent restoration job done on a delicate sender unit. This is something that I would have never attempted, probably because, the slightest mistake and the unit becomes just scrap. I had the same problem as you, when I installed a Veglia Borletti sender unit from a Giulia Super to my car, a 1750 Berlina, which had Jaeger Italia, fuel gauge and instruments,it worked but was not accurate. The only solution was to buy the correct Jaeger sender unit
A lot of older sending units used a design not unlike the one you repaired in this video. This will be incredibly helpful with my own restoration, I was initially hesitant to tear into parts such as these.
Hi Jethro, i know a product that soaking in it will come out perfect and clean, its call X-rust, i can show you pics of the before and the after on a Duetto sender i just did last week, it spare you all the hasle of taking it apart and make it functional again
Thanks so much for the video, I'm all about reusing what you got. I too will be rebuilding my sending unit and can only hope it goes as smoothly as yours, thanks again!!
I had to fix the one on my 1750 GTV too. I just dunk it in rust remover (Evapo-Rust) without dismantling it. Seems to work fine now. It was very rusty and the float had a leak by the metal ring holder, after the car stood for 15 years with some fuel in the tank.
Fantatic and satisfying job that pared well with my coffee just now! I went through sending unit issues with my 86 spider as well; it's very smilar to yours. My problem was the float filling with fuel. I couldn't buy a new float, so I thought that a new sending unit would be the way to go. The new units have the arm coming off the wrong side, which pissed me off. Then, I tested it out with both a multimeter and hooking it to the fuel gauge as you did. The new one was horrible, readings jumped all over the place on the multimeter, and the fuel gauge needle 'sweep' was jerky and sticky, compared to the smooth operation of my original unit. I just bought a float for an MGB that fit the arm and installed the original unit...
That's a smart way to sort it out. I have the same issue with the fuel float for the 72 GTV project, it's dropped off the arm. I'll have to figure out a way to re-attach it somehow.
another great video for all us alfa lovers…. i had the same problem. there are two diff kind of fuel gages, depending on ones respective brands ie veglia or jaeger.
That transition at the bead blaster was so smooth! Cinematics are absolute top of the class as always Jethro. Loving this vid. I really am amazed you brought something back from the brink that was so badly corroded
Thank you for taking the time to make make those fascinating videos Jethro, you have been instrumental in reigniting my interest in Alfas which has been pretty dormant since I sold my unusually rust free Sud ti in the 80's (which I regret to this day) in Scotland when I was probably around your age. Couldn't help but notice that your circuit tester and drill are identical to mine,as are many of your other tools. I must be more discerning than I thought. Your attention to detail and workshop practices are inspirational. Greetings from Alberta Canada.
I believe you mean Ohms Resistance measurement. Measuring resistance in the contact point of the winding. If electrical 'Current' is running through the sender then the tank will explode from the current and vapor. Yes some sending units have current wiring but that should be for the fuel pump and not the Sending unit (which should be using ohms for measurement)🙂
Hey Jethro, I've been viewing your vlogs for about 10 months now and own a 105, 1750 Berlina, but I'm having a great deal of trouble removing the rear discs? The handbrake is not biting at all ( both discs spin freely) I've removed the M8 c/sunk screws, but the discs slide forward about 40mm and then no further. It's becoming fairly soul destroying. Is there something I'm overlooking? Last week I removed the 4 nuts at the back of the disc dust cover, but still no luck. Advice is greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance.
I've been planning to repair my sender unit on a different car, since the fuel pick up is rusty, can I ask, what was the purpose of electroplating the unit?
I love your videos. How do you deal with the old fuel tanks and rust in them. Do you get new ones or re finish the old ones. My 71' beattle has big problems with it
Hi Jethro, I recently subscribed and I’am really learning a lot from you.. A guy gave me an Alfa Romeo for debt of $2000 USD, it was an option of MGA or Alfa, I opted for the Alfa because I was never a fan of British Marques after a bad first experience with my first car, a mini.. The Alfa as been in my garage for over six years, I started her up once but never really looked at it much, my teenage son is now quite interesting in cars and he is insisting that this car is the 1966 Giulia spring GT veloce, it does have the four leaf clover on the c panel and all the right attributes of the veloce.. The boot lid is rusted out, need floor pans, rocker panels and left door..my estimate to repair ground up is about 20k USD.. What do you think, should I do it ?
The entire Classic Alfa community is in your debt for these great videos. So well done. Thank you!!
My pleasure!
The man that can start working on a classic alfa with a white shirt and when the job is finished, still have a white shirt lol. Good Job man!
you don't see the pile of dirty laundry hiding in the duetto's trunk. I swear he has to have changed right when he finished.

Maaaaaan, your films are getting better all the time. I prefer this over most of the stuff I can watch on Netflix.
Actually all of it .
Greasy Fingers thank you! But I think this will be the last film in this style.
Jethro Bronner C’mon
Jethro Bronner Then what are you considering as a next project ?
Love the videos. What changes are you planning? I'm sure it will be great, but really enjoy the current videos.
rcpmac It’s coming in a video very soon!
Another fantastic video proving not everything belongs in the trash , most things just need a deep clean and some TLC
My ‘83 spider’s fuel pumps and fuel gauge just died... this is incredible timing!!!
This is the type of stupid detail work that I love.
That's some nice resurrection there!
Dude you have a well set up workshop. And your know how on Alfa Romeo’s and mechanics in general is second to none.
So satisfying to watch...

Not gonna lie, these videos are soothing to watch. You are so concise in your explanations Jethro!
Hey Jethro....very nice topic to behold..this is one area of the car that we don't hear much about.... Thanks...

Your videos are a big reason why im likely gonna buy myself a 105 saloon as a project car/fun weekend car. Keep up the amazing work!
Awesome! Thank you!

I think this and the transmission rebuild are my favorite videos. Hands On is so fun to watch.
Fantastic video mate. So satisfying to watch old parts being brought back to life.

Brilliant work Jethro that required so much patience and knowledge that you made look so easy - well done 👍
Same thing with my Volvo PV, I just took the easy route and bought a new stainless steel one though haha. Great work!
Yeah that's a good option, I just didn't feel like laying out the cash this time around haha.
Awesome job!
Thanks!

More to come!

An artist, as usual. But I’m curious about the lovely SuperCub (I have one...). Bravo Jethro!
It's for an upcoming video series. I have this 1966 C50 Super Cub and a 1981 CD200 as full rebuild projects for the channel.
Jethro Bronner thank you, grazie!
encore 👏👏👏👏👏
Almost exactly the same as the one in my Renault estafette.
Hi Jethro and followers. Do you know what is the resistance range in Ohms of the Jaeger sender unit? From full to empty deflection?
what metal did you use for electroplating ? what thickness ?
Great seeing these tips in video form. Did this car stand without fuel or very low levels of fuel for long periods of time?

any paint that would work, brushed or sprayed, for the metal parts ?
Hi jethro. could you do a video for the soft top install process? It could be super great. Greetings from Italy
Anyway, killer job as always. I admire your patience
If I get another Spider in for a new top I will definitely film it for the channel.

I have them cleaned out by a local radiator shop, they use an acid dip to get them clean, then put a fresh lining in.
@@JethroBronner oh thats a great advice! I will try to find one as well locally
What did you use in between the connections at the top to isolate them from the metal body? Plastic or rubber washers?
I used fiber washers, and then I sealed everything with some clear epoxy. That seemed to hold everything well.

So you got stranded with nu fuel? Your not worried about any damage of running without fuel? As always nice vid
tuneskramer69 they kinda just cut out when they run out of fuel, it doesn’t hurt the engine, it won’t run lean.
@@JethroBronner ok i am not familiar with these engines. But sure Will make good content 😉
2nd view ! 1st Comment ! Terrific Job Mate ! Got one to restore as well !
I hope this helps!

Awesome job!
Thanks!
