In 1971 I purchased an Alfa Romeo Giulia 1300 TI super. They were exceptional cars, their uniqueness was the sound of the engine, (my wife knew when I was parked at home) the acceleration, the cornering stability and when she accelerated the rear axle she rocked right left. I was 26 years old. After 32 years (I sold it in 2003) and after at least two restorations it didn't behave like this anymore. I have the road tests and the comments of the Quattroruote magazine and the Motor Books Alfa Romeo Giulia 1962-78. You did a perfect competition restoration with impeccable care. I would like to drive it again with the scent of the new car and the scent of rubber and leather. Thanks for the video.
These are not problems, they are wonderful opportunities that you are handling brilliantly. These cars are incredibly under-appreciated. But those in the know, know.
I understand now why you haven't had much time to make videos recently! BTW Jethro, I find the calmness and precision of your assembly videos to be very therapeutic. A true engineer. Great to ease any stress!
Nice job Jethro. In 1969 I had a 1965 Julia veloce with a blown head gasket. My dad milled the head and valve shims for proper clearance on our back porch. He just happened to have a Bridgeport. Ha Ha
This is a well done video. The engine detail is excellent. The 20 min went by unnoticed of time passing. Thanks for not putting in crap childish music that ruins videos. This engine should run like a Swiss watch. Looking forward to the engine run.
I wish I could do any of that- nicely done! I also like that this is not a stupid engine swap- the original engines are a huge part of what makes these cars fun and you really do not need 300hp for that.
Superb! Single click only when torquing. Remember the law of friction. A solid object moving against another solid object has less friction the faster it moves. The maximum friction occurs right before it’s put into motion. So, when using a torque wrench, the nut or bolt is in motion when it reaches the desired force causing the wrench to click, which means it clicked with less friction. When you go for the second click, it takes more force to put the nut or bolt in motion than when you reached your desired torque the first time. If you go for a second click just to make sure, you are not double checking the torque, but instead you’re just risking exceeding the torque you already achieved. One ping only Vasily!
I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed watching a video of an engine rebuild more than this. The precision, care, attention to detail and the calmness to your work is really admirable. I would pay anything to ship my 1969 Duetto 1750 to South Africa and watch you rebuild it.
Boy oh boy, does that ever bring back memories of my '66 Giulia Spyder's motor that I rebuilt 42 years ago! Superb power to weight ratio. A very enjoyable engine to work on.
Such a joy to watch. TOTAL CALM. Jethro Bonner has a relaxed smooth commentary. Knows his stuff and explains to us non mechanical guys in language that we get. Also no bloody awful electronic drum machine music....thank god. Really good. Looking forward to the GTV 1750 rebuild
I can’t believe you lovingly caressed that engine back to life with such love and care right in front of that poor Giulia ti in the background. How she must long for the Jethro touch. 😉 Great work, I love it. You put so much care and attention to detail into your work. It’s admirable.
So I found your vlog, and all I can say is BRAVO! I owned a 1967 Alfa Romeo Duetto, and like you ended up rebuilding the engine (although mine was just a blown head gasket, not a previously messed up rebuild). I ended up selling the car when I became a family man, and had other concerns. I've regretted it so much since. That car was not "the fastest", or "the best handling", but it is something not really made anymore in a car - it is for lack of a better description - a minimalist's dream sports car. Enjoy it, all of it, the work, the driving, the agony, the joy.
What a delight watching you work. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge, I know doing all your videos makes any project take that much longer. Bravo !! Marc. Western Australia.
Jethro...l'm sitting here in complete focus watching your video....this video is for the how to, and should do.... My complement on your effort, and believe me it's not in vein. We sometimes in life fall into a situation that requires a reset. Thus is this 105 motor... A reset that establishes your future out here in the real world. Normally I would have questions after watching you.....but today I have a big smile on my face, and trying to come up with the proper compliments to give to you. Honestly your video is by all means a compliment to you..... Well done, hopefully you can provide a vid on the install and subsequent startup. Your efforts require the respect from all Alfa enthusiast out there... For sure you got mines....
Best tool porn ever! Seriously, your videos are a most wonderful life lesson. You begin with a desire to save a bit of history as an honor to those who built it. You put your all into it and get hit with an unknown, very bad problem. This hurts, after so much hard work. Most people stop here. They are spent, hurt, exhausted. Did Jethro stop? NO, this is where you shine. You re-group your thoughts, pause to recharge and formulate a better plan with the additional information you now have. The new diagnosis was brilliant. It was but one flaw that caused all the issues with the engine. Once you knew that, you charged on with even more confidence. The way you turn bad into good is so beautiful, a life-lesson very much needed in these hard times. Thank You Sir!
I'm a airplane mechanic for the last 21 yrs and i like the way you work. All nice and clean no fuss with power tools and comperessed air tools. It looks like you have it all under control there. Chapeau!!!
Hello I am just coming to the end of my nut and bolt restoration on my 1967 Alfa Romeo Zagato which has the same engine as this one. This video has been a great help with my rebuild of my engine, so thankyou for taking the time to do this video.
I've gone through two engine rebuilds/renovations on my Series II 1750 GTV...I knew nothing about engines before...I didnt do the work on my own but I learned so much by being a part of it...this video so elegantly details how everything fits together and why. I would like to try my hand at a rebuild like this on my own now...The 105 Alfa Manual is actually really comprehensive, but what Jethro adds here are all his know how and tricks that only come with experience.
This is absolutely brilliant!! I have been building 4 cylinder engines (standard induction) for several years and your video reminded me of why I love doing it so much! Well done, sir!!!!
Forget whale song, rainforest sounds, any relaxation CD or mediation. This is true Zen! I am sure you are a Buddhist monk reincarnated. Just watching this I feel calmer, more relaxed and happier, especially now that the engine is back together! I just adore this channel. If you ever need anything shipped from Germany, let me know. 😀
I love your presentation.. just clear and precise explanations of what your doing or experiencing with your builds/projects... no headbanging music dubbed in... no sneaky advertising.. and you are CLEAN.. (keep things tidy and no Fbombs going off).. thumbs up
Hi Jethro, really enjoy your channel and the way you approach adversities in the workshop. I've had several 105s for over 40 years now and one recurring thing I could never really sort out 100% was transmission vibrations. As you know the 105 driveline consists of many elements and they all need to be perfectly in line and balanced to have a totally smooth transmission. Maybe you can do a video about that one day. Thanks and keep up the great work.
I absolutely love watching your videos. So precise and informative and very engaging as well as calming. Looking forward to the next instalment. Keep up the great work.
Well Done! A clear, concise and professional job and sharp technical lighting and photography. I knew someone could do it ! Your attention to detail comes through in the whole process. Cheers jagjet ( 50 years Jaguar operation, building, restoring, racing and importantly enjoying driving)
Nicely done Jethro - there must have been moments when the 1600 engine's life was under threat, but thanks to your perseverance, precision and skill looks as though this Spider is going to have great original engine.
Absolutely excellent piece of work here - in terms of the shots and editing, as well as the engine assembly. I am so glad that RUclips algorithm brought me here couple months ago. Keep up the great work!
Just watched this video. First one from your Chanel. Really enjoyed it, was actually very relaxing. Enjoyed the laid back narration and lack of cheesy music. Excellent camera work also. Well done.
Editing is up there with the best Jethro! And your dedication to precision engineering of these parts - they come together seamlessly. Satisfying and informative content!
The only problem with Jethro's channel is that everytime you watch a new video, there is this consistant feeling of never having enough of it and wanting more. I feel bad seeing how much work he's doing ^^ anyway, it was a fantastic video, it was sush a pleasure to watch this engin being rebuilt and somehow upgraded. It will run bettter than ever before. I can't wait to watch this Duetto spider running back on the roads! Keep the Great work. I can't get enough of your content !
You may want to re think using high temp gasket maker everywhere. Ultra black from permatex is excellent in both adhesion and stopping oil leaks. High heat silicone is good for basically exhaust manifolds. That's it, it's not made for anywhere else. Case sealer for two strokes is also another amazing product for stoping oil leaks
You know, a lot of people have been getting really creative during all this pandemic craziness and recreating classic artworks by some of the worlds best artists. I like to think the best and most beautiful of those recreations is this gorgeous Duetto Spider, and of course who could forget the amazing artist!!! Thanks so much Jethro, I love every single one of your videos, and I've never even owned an Alfa!! But I can honestly say the projects you do are unlike any others on youtube, so much care and attention in every detail, and excellent cinematography. Hell I even showed my adoptive South African family and my Dad loved it hahahaha. My only regret is that it really makes me want to get an Alfa project! But they're so hard to find here in Aus! Hope you are well mate, and thanks so very much, love your work!
Really well shot and edited Jethro. That is a great resource for others to follow in the future, and hopefully it all goes back in and runs without any further issues.
I just want people to have in mind that alongside the big job of assembling that engine you also had the big job of editing this video to look this good. Hats off to you, good man.
Jethro, thanks for that build. I decided not to go ahead with my Super 1600 resto as I came to the realisation before I started that I couldn't do it justice. The body shell had little rust and I had enough spare parts for the interior, engine etc but a long term project without a full size garage would have risked the car. It's therefore great to see a thorough and conscientious build.
I love the purity here, I recently purchased a 1979 spider however I'm going the total opposite and doing an LS swap. Got everything ready to go together just finishing the body first.
Great work as usual. I loved the episode and cannot wait to see the engine running. Really interesting to see the differences and similarities between these Alfa engines and the old mini engines.
New to your channel and really impressed. Will definitely subscribe as soon as I finish posting this. You have no idea how nice it is to watch one of these videos without a lot of insipid music, unnecessary braggaducio and self-aggrandizing dialogue. Thank you for the update, I am so looking forward to the first start and drive of this Alfa. Your attention to detail is off the chart, I would be proud to own a car your have rebuilt. Keep up the good work.
Hi Jethro, i can feel the struggle. Had some great difficulties with 105 engines myself the last couple of months. I think your approach to building engines is great. Making sure everything is super clean and to spec so it's all like new. Keep up the good work
Thanks Jethro for putting together such a great production ,,,I admire your patience with this engine and hope all goes well,,You have also increased my confidence level greatly in terms of opening up my 2000.
That's perfect timing! I can follow along while attempting my 1st rebuild of my 73 Spider Veloce w/Spica. My biggest concern is getting the parts so clean and the fact that it has sat for so long....oh, what I might find. 🤔😲
These videos are so calming for me. It's like anti anxiety medicine for the alfa lover
Jethro - NASA is calling you. Total precision. Brilliant. Best wishes Mark
Thanks! But I'm barely qualified to work on Alfa, let alone rockets.
Jethro Bronner I think the rest of us disagree, bw mark
Never was an Alfa engine assembled at the factory with such care!
I wouldn't be sure. I visited an alfa factory once and the amount of love those people put in assembling the engine is beyond comprehension.
@@MroStudios They have enough time for that since they sell less cars in the whole Europe than Lancia does in Italy.
@@theEskalaator I visited it back in 1995, different era. Nowadays the engine is basically a pre-assembled Ferrari.
That's because they were busy smoking their little Italian cigarettes'.

A nice comprehensive build with attention to detail. I'm putting my fresh rebuilt motor into my 73 GTV today. Thank You
my neighbor in Johannesburg had an alpha spider of the same generation(don't remember which year) and that was the car that got me into car culture.

For us that had a real theraputic vibe to it. It was a true symphony of parts with Jethro as the conductor. Thanks from Sydney, Aus
You can easily fit piston rings by using a stiff feeler gauge held vertically beneath the ring, then gently rotated as the ring is eased downwards.
The best engine rebuild I have ever seen - really high quality, thoughtful work. Thank you for posting this.

Beautiful video of a beautifully executed build!
This so soothing to watch. Thank you.
Beautifully explained, a tonic for these times, thank you from the UK.
I always think that watching Jethro at work must have been like watching Michelangelo paint...so much care, so much precision... it's like therapy
I was hoping you would release a new video on this project. Congratulations on finally getting the engine finished. Thank you for sharing!
Another lovely video. It's inspiring and at the same time soothing to watch. Thank you Jethro
Gotta love how Jethro works!
Well done!
Well that's ok too. A car doesn't have to be perfect to be enjoyed. Sometimes just using them the way they are is enough.
I love the purity here, I recently purchased a 1979 spider however I'm going the total opposite and doing an LS swap. Got everything ready to go together just finishing the body first.
Great work, really love it. Keep it up.
These are just brilliant videos. Totally absorbing. Your forensic approach is matched by your surgeon like assembly of the component parts.
Great work as usual. I loved the episode and cannot wait to see the engine running. Really interesting to see the differences and similarities between these Alfa engines and the old mini engines.
Yeah I can't wait to hear it run, I really hope it's quiet and doesn't leak oil this time around.
