Highly-Skilled Bamboo Master Craftsmen Specialized in Making The "Kishu Fishing Rods(Kishu Herazao)

- Hi Folks,
A few months ago, many people who loved my previous video, "Ancient Technology of Making Bamboo Crafts - Most Incredible Bamboo Woodworking Ever," asked me about "Kishu Fishing Rods." So, we decided to make a video about it.#BambooRod #FishingRod #KishuRod
Watch the whole story of "Kishuu fishing rods" at: • How a "Kishuu Bamboo F...
I started to find out information about "Kishu Herazao" and was very impressed by its flexibility, durability, and lightweight, especially since it has a history of more than 200 years. After more than two days of exploration, I began to write the script, rewrite the content, record a voice-over, add new effects, select new music, and include new footage to create the video: "Highly-Skilled Bamboo Master Craftsmen Specialized in Making The 'Kishu Fishing Rods (Kishu Herazao).'"
This time, our main character is Tatsukawa Hideki (辰川 英輝), a Kishu-Herazao Master Craftsman, who studied under his teacher, Jō Hideo (城 英雄). To become a full-fledged artisan, Tatsukawa Hideki trained under Hideo Jo for five years before setting off on his own. After going off on his own, Mr. Tatsukawa's teacher awarded him the name of Tenshuu, which will be engraved into the rod. He is striving to create his masterpiece.
The bamboo worker named Tenshuu has his own bamboo workshop and does all his bamboo work at home. The path to mastery in bamboo woodworking is long and steep. However, Mr. Tatsukawa is steadily progressing, and one day he will surely achieve his goal.

You seem to ignore that a great part of the most remarkable Japanese culture - be it bonsais, haikus, painting or writing characters ( and words themselves) originated in…China. Your comment is tinted in xenophobia. And ignorance.
Rod/reel combo with fishing kit as an emergency setup ruclips.net/user/postUgkxntWMOZsO1Zfv-pdn_XuffEtNkTYAYu4Z recommend but started to use this every day. The rod is thick and seems durable. I keep it neatly tucked into a regular backpack all the time with my fishing gear, and can grab it anytime, put it on my back and go anywhere. I just read in another review that the rod length below the reel is adjustable as well, so I will try that too for even more portability. Probably the best setup I've ever owned. I lost the cap for the eyelets, but no big deal since I still have the black cloth sheath that came for the pole and I use that. Very portable and high quality.
Anyone's heavy accent is better than machine voice. It lacks ....soul.
You dishonour this craftsman with robot voice.
He is amazing.

Japan loves robot
The wife and I are moving to japan in about 18 months (we’re going to be English teachers!) and this is one of the reasons we chose Japan. Their craftsmanship... aaah! It’s so beautiful!
That'd be amazing, God bless you and your family as always
@@WoodworkingEnthusiasts Did you drill holes?เจ่าะรูมั้ยค่าบ
How is living and teaching in Japan since then?
This is the kind of craftsmanship I love. Minimal tools, simple materials and the end product is a work of art!
Using fire to straighten the bamboo just like steel. That's awesome
The respect you have given to perfecting something as utilitarian as a fishing rod inspires me. People who perfect their craft, take on apprentices and offer a more elegant solution than things made in factories is something from another time and I am so pleased to see you doing it.
I love you man because you are inspiring me
I also think like you, their craft is worth learning.
It's a part of Japanese culture. To perfect ones craft and skill in whatever you do. It is prevalent in their traditional craftsmanship such as this rod making and traditional architecture.
I've been a fisherman for 40 years now and I would have to say that those are some of the most beautiful rods I've ever seen.
It’s fascinating how varied the culture of fishing is in Japan. There’s this very traditional carp fishing and now largemouth bass are just as popular to target as they are in the states. The thing that seems to stay the same across the board is is the art and attention to detail that goes into the gear. These gentlemen along with Yuki Ito of Megabass take a great deal of pride in their work.
Technically, these are whips or poles as they only have an eye at the tip end. Very skilfully made however.
It is heartening to see a traditional Japanese craftsman without gray in his hair.
Yes,The hand-made fishing rod is very elaborate. I can watch the craftsman work all day
These arn't just fishing rods they are a work of art from a real craftsman.!!!
Thank you so much!
the amount of skill , care and attention to detail that goes into making these rods is absolutely astounding , they are not just a fishing rod , they are a work of art too !
Really though I love the craftsmanship but 6 months and you pay an arm and a leg for a piece of straightened Bambu
There's something very satisfying about watching Japanese craftsmen working. They're so focused on whatever it is they are working on. You don't get that kind of quality very often in the US anymore.
Because American people are a joke 💀🤡
Truly a work of art. It used to be when you bought something, it was for life, or you made it yourself. People took pride in their work. Now, we live in a disposable society; nothing is made to last because they want you to buy again and again and again. It's wonderful to watch these gentlemen work and create something beautiful and useful.
Remember when Shakespeare Ugly Stik came out? It was advertised essentially unbreakable! When advertised, they'd bend the tip to the butt, unbreakable. In the early 90's, I went to a Kmart, grabbed an Ugly Stik, went to test it, it broke slam in half. Understand I had original Ugly Stiks. But. I grabbed another, as a present for my uncle. Now, they're made in China. As Craftsman, they were American made, I'd go to Sears to buy them. Now, they're made in China. But still have the same warranty, so probably made to the same specs or better.
Just like products can be obtained overseas but packaged in America, so states American.
As in 70's, American cars went to junk. Even in 80's I recall fleets of Ford trucks bought. Once paint was broken, it'd rust. Toyota introduced their vehicles, better gas mileage and definitely more reliable and dependable, which if not for Toyota American cars might gotten worse. Look at Ford Pinto, a death trap.
But Toyota shipped manufacturing to America and seems they can make a high quality product here the same as those from Japan. Buy a vehicle with an American name, but it or many of its components are made overseas.
😃 😊 😀 😄 😁, talk about a New World order, companies run the world now more than government it seems. 😳 As Dell got its' start here, made a high quality product, but then moved to .
The apprentice has gained a lot of knowledge and is using it to make some beautiful rods. I would love to see a video on the rod supports that they are using clamped to the dock rail. They look amazing also! Master and apprentice should be proud.
When he made his Design using nothing but string it was simply amazing. That's what you call a true artist!
The vd remembering me to my childhood , when I've to used bamboo rod to fish in front of my village's cabin...
It take many years to be that skills
And thanks for the craftsmanship..
Ingenuity requires training and a passion for learning.
What a great young man. What a blessed country Japan is
One of my favorite jobs I ever had was making split bamboo fly rods. My skills were not up to par with this guy, but the feeling you get from learning a craft with your hands is great. And bamboo is a great medium to work with.
Very cool! Thank you very much!
Where'd you learn to make fly rods? It's said fly-fishing with bamboo rods is excellent. So I ask.
I'm really glad that most of this video was no commentary so you can just watch this masterful art.
I love Japanese craftsmanship. It is a work of art. If I ever fortune enough to own one of these rods, it will be mounted on the wall.

Guess i just found the first mistake by myself... (missing "s" right?)
The dedication to there craft is by far more beautiful then the rod. For some reason the majority have lost that. Glad to see it still exists.
WOW, Glad you liked it too! God bless you and your family always
I am so happy to see this video. I was lucky enough to have used one of these for an afternoon with a friend's grandfather back in the 80's. the touch is so sensitive, you can feel the fish nibbling on the bait. We went fishing for Bream (a type of Blue Gill). One of my best ever fishing memories. A most excellent pole.
Hahahaha, you fish these on a float. you cant feel the fish biting.
Amazing how much time is spent making something so simple into something so complex, yet still elegantly simple.
Vida longa, feliz e próspera a cultura artesanal. Gratidão pelo belo exemplo e magnífica inspiração.
By hand and by eye. Craftsmanship at it's best. 😊

It looks lile he put all of his life into a craftmanship product. I used to buy factory made carbon fishing rods. But this one is a masterpiece. Even they build it using specified tools. Salute..
great culture and i love how seriously he crafts those rods
I feel like a few steps were skipped in showing the formation of the handle. One second it's newspaper wrapped around the rod, next it's being wrapped in string? I want to see everything! (Because it's so cool!) Ah well. Thank you for posting this!
Who wouldn’t want to own a work of art like that 😍

My brothers and I used to fish for trout with bamboo rods when we were kids back in Pennsylvania. It was so much fun, and brought new challenges. Fishermen got a big kick out of us with our 10ft plus bamboo rods along the creeks. These japanese rods are on a whole different level of beautiful. Nicely done.
WOW it was just really low key
That is a definition of japanese people😉
I love this perfection and these people.

I lived off the Kinokawa for a year. I miss it almost daily. The people of Wakayama, the scenery, Kouyasan. One heck of a bike ride from Iwade.
All this trouble to catch a carp. For some reason, it makes me happy to know that, somewhere in the world, people can actually make a living from doing this kind of thing.
Beatiful work, i already watch many times this masterpiece.
We produce bamboo rods here in Brazil, it's beautiful to see the different ways to manufacture fishing rods around the world! hugs from Brazil!

I wish they could have explained what qualities this bamboo had over other kinds and how that might affect their ability to enable catching these carp. It would have been a good opportunity to reveal why one type of pole might be of greater value than another.
Stunning work. Hope the fish appreciate the the time and effort put into these rods. Know if I was a fish, I wouldn't mind being caught on one of these. In fact, there wouldn't have to be bait or lure on the line. For if I was swimming along and spied one of these works of art, I'd probably just climb up the line for a better look .
philthy cat 1 hahahahahaa wtf.
youre obviously not a fish, youre a cat!
What kind of wood was the last section of the fishing rod made of?
I've searched the internet for these rods, but to now avail. Does anyone have any idea's on the price of these masterpieces?
EDIT - Found them. 90,000 to 200,000 yen. Might seem a lot, but for 6 months worth of skilled work...
How much is that in U.S. $ ? I would bet kinda expensive I'm sure.
My Great Grandmother made cane fishing poles to sell at her little bait shop by the lake. She would cut her own cane, work it, varnish it. I still have a few of them left and they are so much fun to fish with. It’s a different kind of sport using a cane pole vs. a rod and real.

When I was in the Navy stationed in Yokosuka, Japan in '99 to '04, I bought a handcrafted lure about 5 inches long, cost me $300. Beautiful work, wish I had the guts to use it, it's on display with other lures I bought while there. Cheapest price I paid for one was $85, $300 was the most. I used my $85 lure and another that cost $160, until I almost lost 😖😱 it to a small 🦈, and that's when I decided🤔 that they'd all go on 😐 display!! Yeah, I really thought at the time that I wouldn't care if I lost one to a fish until I almost lost one, that's when reality kicked in. The time it took for the old man to make me these lures and the details of them, you couldn't tell them from a real one, that's how good he was.
