    So here is my take on the M9A3. To preface let me point out that I've been an Army grunt for over a decade, combat deployments etc.etc. The only reason I say that is to add some, albeit small, level of credibility to my stance. Also, let me say that this is based solely on my own personal experience. As having carried and trained with the M9 a decent amount, (initially being trained by the Army Marksmanship Unit), I will tell you that the M9 is indeed a good military side arm. It is accurate, rugged, and reliable, there I said it. I did carry it in combat, but thankfully was never forced to use it as that probably would have meant my M4 had shit the bed, or I was out of ammo. I can think of one time drawing my M9 in order to clear a small subterranean structure. However, where the the problems arise with M9s in my experience is two fold. 1) Lack of training. The Army does not properly train soldiers on how to shoot and maintain the pistol. I've recently been to a M9 qualification range and the ways soldiers were shooting and manipulating the gun were hideous ( and this was a company of infantrymen). Not to mention, it doesn't take even an average shooter to be able to qual with the gun. The qualification is a joke honestly. 2) The care and upkeep of the fleet of M9 pistols and magazines currently in use is severely lacking (in my opinion). I have personally used beat up magazines with severely worn out springs and handguns so abused that the sights had chunks of metal missing, very weak springs in the guns, as well as internally having what looked like metal removed from the slide grooves (not sure if that was from wear over time or someone did a hack job on the guns). Having experienced all of this, I have to surmise that many soldiers' personal bias against the gun aside, this is where the stigma of the unreliable M9 comes from. Keep it wiped down, properly maintained, feed it good mags, and the pistol will work fine (from my experience). Here is where I am conflicted on the issue. Now, even though I do enjoy the M9, I would not shy away from a new handgun, IF the Army does it correctly. However, I feel that Tim is right and I would rather see that money be invested elsewhere or not spent at all. That being said, my infantry knees and back aren't getting any younger and the more I wear body armor for long periods, heavy ass rucks for click after click and mile after mile, the less I like to add more weight. For those that don't understand, there was a time before plate carriers, (command dependent generally), that grunts had to wear not only the typical vest with plates, (IBA or IOTV), but also side plates, kevlar dick protectors, kevlar neck protectors, internal and external DAPS, and a small kevlar butt flap. Now combine all of that with your helmet, 10lb rifle, NVGs, ammo, water, ifak, radio, and all the mission essential bells and whistles. If there is ever a time again that I have to execute missions at elevation in some God forsaken mountainous region, it would be a joyous occasion to carry a lighter and even perhaps polymer sidearm if possible. Again, the Army has to do it correctly and that means better training as well. They have made amends with the new camo pattern so I hope they continue the trend with regards to the new pistol.

      +WallyMerc06 I think it also has to do with those cheapy Checkmate magazines the Army buys might be causing some of the reliability problems. I've only got to shoot the M9 a handful of times and the ones my unit has have probably been in the inventory since Desert Storm, they're all shot out, my grouping at 15m was the size of the target and I usually consider myself a decent pistol shooter.

      Kennard Lang Could very well be those mags. I too have seen some beat up M9s. Perhaps it's a testament to the design that they still function?

      @jake86chev 9 лет назад +19

      +WallyMerc06 I wasn't a grunt in the Army, but an aviation cat. That said my experience was very limited but you hit the nail on the head. Admin range sessions once a year and failure to replace worn parts fueled the undue hate on the M9. I never had a problem with it and it works.

    Former US Army M1A1 tanker here. My issue M9 rode, unloaded, in an old .45 shoulder holster. Your point about lack of range time is spot on. Back in the day(early '90s), we qualified once a year and that was it. That said, I liked my M9 so much I finally got one. Very glad I did. They're getting harder to get and more expensive.

    I purchased a M9A3 1 week ago and love it!! Out of the super cool box ready to go, nothing needed to add and plenty quality to boot. I paid $975.00 out the door at my range. This is a world class pistol in all aspects. The last Berreta M9 I owned was in 1986, I purchased it brand new... 30 years later I own another one and it is phenomenal!!

    Why would anyone whine about this being $1000? There are far more expensive handguns without even stepping up to exotic stuff. $1000 seems like a steal for this with Cerekote, 3 mags, etc.. I'm only into Glocks for my defensive handguns but this is the first gun since the Five-Seven that I could really see buying just because it's cool.

    I have carried the M9 during my active Army career as well as my post military contracting career in Central Asia and Iraq. Its a fine handgun and I carried it in standard holsters as well as concealed shoulder holsters, Galco. Never had any issues with it and shot very well with it. It was a bit big for the concealed rig but I'm a big guy and not a big deal. I did not know about the plastic trigger in the A2? and I don't care for that at all. I'm old school and hope the replacement is not polymer framed. Yes, I have a Glock and like it but for military durability I think steel and aluminum is best.

      Thank you also for your post, and for your service. I agree, the M9 is a very serviceable firearm.

    • @pixelpanache
      @pixelpanache 7 лет назад +3

      People call them plastic triggers, but the newer Beretta triggers are steel inside with polymer molded over the outside. You can check this with a magnet. The safety levers are done the same way. Polymer-on-metal is supposed to have natural lubrication properties that allow the surfaces ro run smoother and wear longer than metal-on-metal.
      The plastic guide rod was, I believe, a change to the M9 contract requested by the military, which Beretta has added to the commercial 92 models as well. The reason is supposed to be that if you drop an M9 with the slide locked back you can bend or nick a steel guide rod and cause cycling problems. I can't imagine that this is a common or serious issue, but the military asked for it. The plastic guide rod is also fluted to allow sand and debris to escape. I have both kinds and don't care either way.

    • @andrew-ripley1747
      @andrew-ripley1747 9 лет назад +2

      I found the referenced cost statement from Beretta... looks like its the usual case of, "if your tax money isn't paying for the upgrade, your private spending will". Unless there's some unseen cost saving design in the M9A3, which I don't see. I'm guessing that the proposed lower cost is simply a profit cut that would be made up elsewhere, though I don't see how Beretta could expect private handgun sales and accessory/part sales to the military to make up for a profit loss on the main package, seeing as the U.S. military tends to go third party for accessories, and the civilian market isn't exactly gobbling up Beretta's full size service pistols. Maybe the original M9 prices were super inflated, and the M9A3 prices would simply be inflated to a lesser degree?

    • @caseybennett4482
      @caseybennett4482 9 лет назад +1

      +Kevin Greenleaf I believe it was more that Beretta quoted the .MIL that they could provide large contract orders of them for the same price or slightly cheaper than the current M9s. It may also have been accounting for retrofit/upgrading costs.
      If these came standard with normal M9 barrels, they would be $100 cheaper. I'd be surprised if that option doesn't happen in the next year or so.

    • @miket5872

  • @MrBigden37
    @MrBigden37 9 лет назад +2

    Excellent and informative review as usual. Dig Beretta's, I'm a "G" man myself. The Military should go with the M9A3, but they have an uncanny need to waste tax payers money for no logical reason. Senator McCain has questioned the military's logic regarding the Joint Combat Pistol Program and is wholeheartedly against it, and I agree.

    The handgun is used, issued, and carried by "front line" troops, not just officers and MG crews. I used mine in many situations when fighting in Sadr City in OIF 2.

    • @TengrioftheCrimsonSky
      @TengrioftheCrimsonSky 5 лет назад

      Not sure if I'm misunderstanding you or you're misunderstanding Tim. He didn't say the M9 is a rear troop weapon he's saying that due to supply line waits and funding issues the new M9A3 would see "use" by command and "rear" troops before Marines (who arguably are the tip of the spear as far as foot movements go) ever got their hands on one. For what it's worth I was Air Force Security Forces and we're the only ones besides Special Forces proper who will see the M17/18 anytime soon in the AF outside said command personnel.

    • @scholl608
      @scholl608 9 лет назад +3

      +Ala-eddine el ouazzani It is most probably the built in audio compressor of the camera. To avoid audio distortion, the compressor lower the sounds that exceed a given threshold. The problem is that all the other sound of the video are lowered as well, which gives that annoying silence following the gun shot.
      I don't know much about cameras, but I doubt you can change the compressor settings that easily.

    I have had a Beretta 92FS for close to 5 years now and have put several thousand rounds down its pipe. Out of the many 9mm handguns I have played with the 92 is still my favorite, and has honestly had better reliability than anything else I've ever shot. I am not sure why people complain about the grip size, my wife and my mother(both about 5'4", small handed ladies) both enjoy shooting the 92 more than any other handgun we own. Also I have never accidentally hit the safety when racking the slide, but I guess it could theoretically be possible to do? But I am very happy to see the dovetailed front sight, have batted the idea for a long while of getting mine milled.

      The 92 is extremely reliable, that was proven in two separate trials. It, like every other weapon, must be maintained to keep that reliability. The government is horrible about that. Even the old 1911's were unreliable at the end of their service life before the M9 was adopted. The government hadn't made new ones since the end of WWII.

    I think this might be the first time I have found myself really wanting a 9mm. I have always been a .45ACP man. This pistol wont change that, BUT I think I would like to add it to my collection of U.S. military firearms.

    The M9 shoots extreme accurate and never jams. Everybody was the talk about the reliability of glock. A glock don't have Shit on the M9 when it comes true liability

      I agree... I shoot ipsc in australia.. I've used a glock 34 about 3 or 4 times.. I got a stovepipe twice out of those times on seperate occasions, so much for glock reliability. The beretta will never stovepipe because of that open slide design.. i would trust my life to the beretta

    Why is wrapping the supporting index finger around the trigger guard no longer popular

    • @davidsettle2543
      @davidsettle2543 8 лет назад +1

      Cause you can wrap the firing had with more even pressure if you use all four of your support hand fingers on top of them. This also means coverage of the firing hands pinky finger. The other benifit is you can more contact with the grip by the heel of the support hand followed by a better indexing of both thumbs toward the target.

      +AK107DX Not true at all. The 92a1 has a frame buffer and m9a1 does not. 92fs/m9 slides will fit onto the 92a1 but not vice versa due to dimensional differences. Also the 92a1 has interchangeable front sights and the M9a1 does not.

    On the importance of pistols for the military I see the point and defer to your experience, but even before Fridays events it seems the concepts of "front" and "rear" are kind of becoming irrelevant. With that I'm wondering if pistols might be more important now than in previous times.

    I dig the intro music. A buddy of mine that I've known for close to 14 years owns a M9, M9A1 and the 90 two. I personally love the 90 two, it's smooth very easy to use and fun to shoot. In fact it was the first gun I used my first time at a shooting range. It's not too intimidating for beginners and this is just my opinion but once you get the feel for its rhythm, you can fire just about any other pistol except for a magnum revolver. I'm trying to work my way up the ladder to eventually get behind the trigger of the baddest beast of 'em all: the .50 cal M107 semi-auto sniper rifle.

      One thing people don't realize is that Berettas aren't cheap. Yeah, this one might be pretty expensive, but a brand new normal 92fs will still set you back at least 700 bucks compared to 500-550 that a Glock, S&W or XD would be. My Beretta was 700 when I picked it up like 6 years ago. Over 3k rounds later and a lot of her finish coming off the slide, she's still running like a champ with no malfunctions.

The army here are junk they use cheap browning HP copies that are flogged out but they barely train with pistols anyway let alone with their rifles. If theres a war we are fucked we only got 38k army staff.. BUT we have 2 million registered firearm owners and 50 percent would outshoot our army guys anyway since most are target shooters or hunters or competition shooters.. our army gets fuckall trigger time it makes me mad.

    I had shot 1911's plenty of times, but in my 18 years in the Army never shot an M9 until my last few years... and hated how fat the M9 grip was. Now that I see that the grip has been slimmed I would actually consider buying one, no doubt it greatly improves handling.

  • @JinkxSoldga
    @JinkxSoldga 6 лет назад

    Got a chance to handle one the other day, and I was very impressed. Trigger was .. just DREAMY and MUCH better than a A1 hands down, mag eject/insert was dreamy, grip size was perfect, grip checkering .. perfect, very well balanced, slide to frame fit/finish was outstanding, polished feed ramp, I did notice the coating on the mags VERY NICE... I am used to Sig's and have grown used to the Sig decocker location, that's really the only personal negative I had about the pistol. It's next on my get list.

If I had to have only one gun,,,,Vertec or this M9A3 is the one I want. They discontinued the Vertec quite a few years ago but because of this A3, the Vertec is back. Thanks Beretta.
