@shodanxx 1. depends on current density, 2. not really, 3. depends on concentration, temp and agitation, 4. depends on conditions, 5. wears out, 6. more information on the composition required before i can make an assessment. 7. There is no 7th question.
Well done! I'll be sharing this with my 2CV friends (a basic French car that rusts if un protected. Thank you for making!!! Next on the wish list is basic video on how to set up a galvanizing business to rust-proof 2CV bodies (tall order. I know; maybe someone will see).
NurdRage The white powder is called wet storage stain, or white rust, It's because you didn't give the zinc time to oxidize before your saltwater test, The galvanized nail would have performed much better if given the time to"dry" I'm more experienced with hot-dip galvanizing, but I know the look, thought you ought to know.
@CowOverTheMoon research a topic called "overpotential" to see why zinc comes out. And the iron does not become Fe2-, it just gets a negative potential. The copper wires in your house don't get Cu2+ or Cu2-. But they do get charged with electricity.
Rust is good for your skin though. I used to make rust (using scrap nails in salt water, fish tank equipment to bubble air through it), and apply it to my skin, I had ezxema. It was my lifeline.
Some one help me out here.... There is a name for this, something like "sacrificing" or something like that..... I can not think of the term for it!!!!! aaaahhhggggg..... Anyone? Mr nurdrage?
@Gmc42082 Thank you... Yes that's what I was thinking of... I had it on the tip of my tongue, but just could not think of it..... It was like a splinter in my brain.... Thank you...
Can you make tutorial for how to nickel somethink? Actualy I know how to nickel but I need a tutorial for how to make nickel solution at home, bencause I can only buy it on internet shop. In my countrey there is not many stores with chemicals, and everythink is too expensive. For example, I saw that on e-bay you can buy 99.9% copper sulfate for $0.99. In my countrey you can buy 50g for about $5 here is average payment 3000 kunas a month ($500). The cheapest I was find was 100g for $4.
That's the problem with american schools. The point of school was to become educated, and the people who did not pass or do as well would work more menial jobs while the people who did well could have more advanced jobs. In America, the subject is retaught and dumbed down so every idiot passes and eventually makes high school diplomas and bachelor degrees almost worthless.
Here I am in your life, here you are in mine. Yes we have a sweet life, most of the tiiiime. You and me we got the world to see, so come on doown. Just me and you know what to do so come on dooown. is you and me, me and you, we got the whole place to ourselves, You and me we got it all for free so come on dooown, this is the suite life, we've got a suite liiife.
@Ubojica6661 One more think I need to tell you. In my countrey everythink is about 300-350% more expensive then in every other countrey. In Slovenia one machine I bought cost 350 kunas, in Croatia (my countrey) It cost 780 kunas, and on e-bay 127 kunas. Sooooo? Can you help me in my expensive countrey? Thanx! BTW our payment is about 17-25 000 kunas... XD
your alternator generates electricity by the belt which does run off gas/hho the alternator recharges the battery as you drive and the battery is connected to the hho cell which generates the hho gas it a cycle that can boost your miles per gal to 60+ a gal nothing in life is free
any engine can run on nitrogen if condenced mythbuster applied nitrogen from a nitrogen bottle to the carb of a car and started the car without gasoline then it backfired and almost blew themselves up its on mythbusters so everyone who thinks they know more than me can take it up with mythbuster
@NurdRage no but if you pop the bubbles with a flame the should actually make a POP sound and if you build a big enough coil that makes lots and lots of bubbles it pops very loudly just sayin i hated science in highschool kinda fun as a 23 year old though
Can you show how can I make a nickel galvanize solution? Or just send me a message if you don't want to make the video. THANX!!! I llllllooooooovvvvvvveeeee yoooouuuuuu! Because you have nice videos with all explanation. Sorry for my bad english!
youtube hho gas it is hydrogen and i am an idiot lol but nontheless added to your enging could take 15 mpg to 30 mpg or better less gasoline is burnt because of the excess hydrogen which comes from water which is free
Nice way, So if i have more parts amount and bigger parts, should i have more current ? Should i wait more ? Should that piece of plate be bigger ? Should i change the cable into a bigger one ? Should change the zinc liquid often ? Thanks 🙏
So I am wondering, if someone chemically needed zinc, could you do by putting a load of galvanized steel into sodium hydroxide solution? if sodium zincate is what you needed that is.
Thanks!! This clears everything up for the stuff we're learning in chem!!! I find it's these practical "how to" videos that helps me understand the concepts more, rather than those that only teach the concepts and nothing practical.
you probably know that a galvanized nail was found amongst King Tut's things, along with his boomarangs, his model plane, and his stainless steel dagger, I kid you not.
lol i did a experiment simalar to this but i used a copper plate and i think zinc and also the zinc that was in the solution (vinagar and salt) was completly disolved lol
so i think you might be also producing nitrogen bubbles that are flamable and can be used to make a very fuel efficent car check out browns gas on you tube
noble metals are noble because they don't normally oxidize, silver will tarnish because of sulfur and copper will form a patina, and along that notes iron forms a patina just like copper but the carbon in steel makes it flake. gold doesn't react to pollutants in the air or the ingredients of normal air which some people believe is why it's so highly regarded. is it possible to put a zinc coating on noble metals? as long as you have a sacrificial anode of zinc and the zinc sulfate it'll work.
would it be possible to hook up the negative lead of a battery to say an iron bar and the positive end to an antenna to give the metal a negative charge? i kinda want to try that, i think i'll do the same test you had, two nails in a salt solution, only i'll have one connected to a batterie's negative terminal. just for kicks and giggles i might make an actual circuit by hooking a battery up to a capacitor and using the test metal as a connection between the two...
if you make the zinc plating thicker, will it last longer or just flake off if it's too thick ? is there a way to passivate the zinc coating to stop it from corroding ? what is the ideal voltage/current per cm² for plating zinc ? is this plating method as good as hot dip galvanize ? I found a "self-etching" galvanizing primer, I applied an even coat on the engine bay of a car but after a few months surface rust started poking through, how come ? and what is this etching exactly supposed to be ?
I have a galvanized chain link fence. Over the last couple of winters, "freeze heave" has pushed the posts up 6". I want to put a galvanized bolt thru the bottom of the post to prevent that. Will the bare steel drilled hole appreciably diminish the life of the post? Perhaps concrete too, but not sure that is such a good idea? Thanks for all the videos!!!!!
@NurdRage thanks for the concise answer I will get back to you with more information for #6 "5. wears out" do you mean that this method will fail due to mechanical wear more than hot dip galvanize but that this method is as effective (for the same thickness of deposited zinc) for corrosion inhibition
@aCagedApe my expirience with such metallic shinny paints is that they don't react. therefor leaving it outside for a week wont do anything. this is why i am looking for an alternative solution to my problem and i am hopping that someone can confirm that galvainizing or anodizing would do the trick.
@Alzikspinner sorry to disappoint, it wouldn't work. this technique works on most metals, not fingers, or any part of your body for that matter... besides, I wouldn't pass an electrical current through any part of my body to try this out anyway, even if it's just 5V
2 questions. Hydrogen ions are discharged easier than zinc ions. But why is zinc still discharged? And when you say iron has a negative charge, does it mean that its Fe2- or something? Thanks in advance. You'll be a great help in my chemistry
So if I want to build a wooden fence held together by nails the zinc crust will keep the nails safe on for a long time (like a year or two) ? is it worth the effort or is it cheaper to buy already galvanized nails ?
I think you've got Nitrogen and Hydrogen mixed up, somehow... I know nitrogen is part of nitrous oxide, which is a fuel additive used to squeeze more power out of the engine for a short time... Maybe that's where you got it?
Tis funny, we use an Iron solution to remove impurities from the zinc solution in a tank of weak sulphuric acid, yep I make the zinc solution that plates out zinc metal onto aluminium cathodes through electrolysis.
zinc sulfate is used just just that solution would conduct electricity? I've done some zinc electroplating experiments in past and it works even for example with ordinary table salt (some sugar and acid improve results also).
DR L I witnessed an associate of mine take a piece of aluminum foil dip it in a liquid and fold it and have it turn too hot to hold can you explain?.....u can contact me for more detailed info
@EnterARandomNameHere Oh sorry, I didn't mean I couldn't understand, I just meant I like his voice too much. Even if it has been altered, I sometimes find myself watching the videos just to hear him talk.
@aCagedApe this is exactly the problem, wood doesn't but a layer of iron or aluminum poweder would. what i want to know is the result of such experiment, how hard or stable would it turn out.
two silly questions. is there any significant issue by using tap water that may be hard? And what happens if the solution you made of zinc sulfate and water is more diluted than 30grams per 100 milliliter. Will it not galvanize as fast, as well, or not at all?
forget everything in this video. because while preparing to galvanize metal, you shouldn't think about it too much, you may stumble and trip up, and fall on your face. don't hold back.
But how can i get a much smoother and good looking surface after galvanizing? I'm going to make a part for a guitar which I need to protect and has to be a very good looking part to.
@ThisNameIsNotProfane Just turn on the annotations by pressing the rounded rectangle with "CC" in it. Would this work in galvanizing something copper, such as a penny, to make it silver?
@thetommantom metal cutlery uses stainless steel, not galvanised metal.. can't comment on the battery part; don't know what batteries taste like, and don't intend to find out.
Tap water or distilled, does it matter for this? Could we us 12-14 volt battery? If yes do we lessen amount of time in solution? How do we know it's enough time when doing larger pieces?
DR L I witnessed an associate of mine take a piece of aluminum foil dip it in a liquid and fold it and have it turn too hot to hold can you explain?.....
Very cool. Reminded me of a video about colloidal silver production. Have you had any experience with colloidal silver? That would be a fun video that would sure stir up some discussion and views!
Sounds as if the narrator's vocal chords were galvinized
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Might be choked in his own shit . 🤣
Throat full of shit
Very funny.
Well, here we are...
I never said it was "hot dip" galvanizing. But it's still "galvanizing" as "electroplating"
What happens if we use a rusty nail or other rusty object instead of a clean non corroded metal? Will this process also removed corrosion?
@shodanxx 1. depends on current density, 2. not really, 3. depends on concentration, temp and agitation, 4. depends on conditions, 5. wears out, 6. more information on the composition required before i can make an assessment. 7. There is no 7th question.
Well done!
I'll be sharing this with my 2CV friends (a basic French car that rusts if un protected.
Thank you for making!!!
Next on the wish list is basic video on how to set up a galvanizing business to rust-proof 2CV bodies (tall order. I know; maybe someone will see).

Even though I never do these experiments, they're always entertaining and informative to watch!

So! is it useless method to protect steel?!
Reality Insight Library no not at all it’s a really good method to do if done correctly
Anvil Bound i want to galvanised my car.... Is it possible to do this?
thank you so much, have been looking all over youtube for this kind a video, I am going to use it in a school project and again thank you :D
@Buzzlybonk doesnt matter, it doesn't change the fact the untreated nail rusted faster than the treated nail.
@CowOverTheMoon research a topic called "overpotential" to see why zinc comes out. And the iron does not become Fe2-, it just gets a negative potential. The copper wires in your house don't get Cu2+ or Cu2-. But they do get charged with electricity.
Cool, I've done this before except I used Zinc Chloride I made from some Zinc and HCl
I can't stop watching its 5 am it's so amazing he must have the best chemistry class ever
very informative. Didnt know or forgot about the sacraficial anode bit about the galvinisation. Great into into chemistry for my son. keep posting!
Nurd rage love the videos man. Is there a chemical and/or electrical process to remove or scavenge the zinc off of galvanized products?

Water and oxygen are needed to corrode Iron into Iron (II) oxide, but why is salt needed? Does it catalyze the reaction?
@Hackin32 there are always people called "HATERS", that just have to click dislike.. sadly

ohhhh! so that's why the screw a piece of zinc to marine engines? so it protects the whole engine? niceee! Always wanted to know that.
@NurdRage is it possible to add color to the solution to add color to various metals? (in similarity to anodizing aluminium/titanuim)
question, what is the difference between this method of galvanization and "hot galvanization"? (as far as end product, not the process)
@NurdRage Dude, you need to do an audiobook or something. I don't care what you're saying, I just want to hear you say it.
could you also show how to hot galvanize?
and is there any other coating then zink that can be put on easy?
thanks
cause teachers have to teach at lower levels to be fair on the kids that don't have as much intelligence per say
Awesome video, we need more microscope videos!
the atomosphere is made up of more than 70% of nitrogen. if nitrogen was flammable i think we would be fucked
@NurdRage is that method you used to turn copper pennies to silver results the same rust protection?
Thanks!
so you could connect multiple nails and they would just plate slower? or would it take the same amount of time?
could you try to cover another nail with Cu and show that it will rust faster ? rly nice closeup of the nails
can i dip both nail into vinegar to acelerate the redox reaccion??
cuase i really want it to mae it fast
@benlee387 I'm Ironman and i'm not wearing any kind of stupid overpowered armor, im just made of iron!
Why did you have electrodes connected to your genitals?
Have you been watching Efukt's "Love Plug"?
@leeofbacup maybe you thinking sacrificial anode.
Now i just have to figure out where to dispose of the 500ml of zinc sulphate solution.
I actually did learn about this in high school! But the sure didn't tell me about aqua regia.
@NurdRage can u forge galvinized metal or do u only do that after the metal is already foreged?
in first place... since what year nitrogen is flammable...
Very cool. Reminded me of a video about colloidal silver production. Have you had any experience with colloidal silver? That would be a fun video that would sure stir up some discussion and views!
That is really Interesting, I had no idea that was the electric charge the one protecting the iron from corrosion.
yea i know right?
i'm kinda late to reply
can I galvanize uranium?!
LOL
can i use a higher voltage? why only 5 volts?
Well, here we are, 15 years later
I have no idea what's going on but i like to watch science stuff and see the result! :D
I will galvanize my metal. I galvanated my metal. I am galvanut fuck shit.
I can't see why people dislike these videos. Are they like "fuck zinc rust rocks!"?
Why didn't you just use heated a solution of NaCl in H202 to rust them in minutes?
@discaras thanks im going to try that i currently have copper sulfate just no zinc
I have done very similar with Woodprix designs.
Very cool! How long will the zink sulfate solution last?
Sounds cool, I just need to find some zinc sulfate... I can use pennies as a source of zinc metal.
hi can i apply it to the fuel tank of motorcycle to avoid rusting inside the gastank?
Did you make the Zinc electode from the casing of a Carbon Zinc battery?
i think there is a typo in the first sentence of your video description
@azizborashed its included? water and oxygen. salt for a faster reation
