New to European cars, Fiat 500, 2012. You might warn that it would be a good idea to use a 6 point socket. On mine the oil filter is easier to access if the plastic cover is removed. Good video, thanks.
Never did it before, and service is getting harder and harder to find for the FIAT (the dodgeramfiat dealer is losing interest in FIAT customers here). Thanks for the info on ramps versus jacks.
Wow, that absolutely blows. Fiats are increasingly becoming an extreme niche enthusiast cars for the daring as even mechanics are turning their backs on them.
Haha yeah this is one of the more involved ones. How do you like the Abarth? I really considered buying one instead of my Fiesta ST when I was in the market.
@@speedygarage264 surprisingly pretty good, I really like it. So much in fact I bought another, a 2017 Tourismo “hotted up” that my wife drives. Also, an excellent car.
Thanks, was wondering if I had to take pan cover off to get to drain plug is what brought me here. Going to try not to, have wide oil for mess. Neck is fused together at C1 & 2 from broken spine, can't be under car long. I love my long 2 piece Eastwood ramps never move, wide, strong & come apart for side access.Always save money, to buy more toys! Good job I can take it from there. Thanks again !
Just a note to help people out who change their own oil. What works really good for draining your oil into, is a couple used laundry detergent bottles. It's handy, and convenient when you have to take your used oil to be recycled.
thx. after all these years I finally figured out how to stop messing with those dirty oil drain pans. And I'm an automotive technician. loL@@speedygarage264
Little quirky but not bad similar to my Pontiac solstice. At least the oil drain plug is facing down for easy draining when it’s on the ramp Glad the oil filter is reachable from on top of the car
It’s just physically difficult. If you don’t have some relatively unconventional tools (wobbles, extensions, etc), you need to either buy them or get someone else to do it forever.
The oil level shows lower on the ramps because you hadn't started the engine yet. After you started it and backed it off thr ramps some of the oil fills the filter housing and is held in the filter medium. This probably why you don’t see it happen when you prefilled filters on other cars.
dude... great video. But... re-record that you shows how to needle extension through little hole between light and metal support. Do you have a Transmission service video ?
You're right - I probably should re-record since I didn't know about the extension trick. I'll do it next time I do the oil service. I'll get a transmission one done soon since the car also needs it!
Tip for the oil getting all over the cross member just cut a bottles bottom off and a hole bit enough for drain and a magnet above it and slip in on (this is the only reason i can think of that NO ONE will get this cars oil changed)
Show the top of the filter so they can see the nipple The online search gives different filter numbers per brand and some of the results may be incorrect the correct 1 has the unique top wit a nipple
Why don’t you mention the engine in title oder description?? I don’t get it.. The steps and the tools you need differ between the engines used for the fiat 500
@@speedygarage264 aah alright, i didn’t know that 🙃 in Europe we have about 5 different Pretrol und 1 Diesel Engine for the fiat 500. The Position and the type of filters and screws differ in those
Brother, there’s a hole on the top of the bumper so you can directly reach the filter housing with a long extension without the use of Wobblies. Wobbly slips on that plastic housing and strips it, you’ll need a new one. If you’re gonna do something, especially making a video about how to do something, do it 100% right.
@@JOESMITH-bx8qvfor real lol. This is such a great informative guide that's very accessible to the average person. A small thing like that doesn't warrant such a comment smh
There’s a hole to feed the extension through so that you can get straight to the oil filter cover.
You're right - I didn't learn about this till after I made the video! Thanks for sharing though, hope the rest was helpful!
They are charging crazy for an oil change right now. I decided to learn how to do it myself so thank you for this video really helped a lot!
Glad it helped! Overpriced service is what convinced me to learn how to work on cars in the first place!
Best part is you told us what size bolts they are. Thank you

Yes - I've noticed that too about the dealers! Unfortunate for sure.

Well done mate. I changed the oil and filter on my 2011 Abarth…once. I now pay my mechanic to do it😅 My previous Suzuki Swift Sport was so easy!!

As a Fiat owner I feel like everyone should know how to change the oil because apparently it's next to a possible for anyone to actually change it
It is a real shame how hard it is to get Fiat service anywhere in America.
Pep boys did it for us! Just letting anyone know if they’re looking for a place

Nice, thanks. Had no idea that thing was the filter. I'm used to longitudinal engines so this thing is all sideways on me lol
Thank you very much for doing this video. Is full synthetic better than a blend?
Definitely better to go full synthetic!
Thank you my friend excellent tutorial

I there, great video 👍🏻 do you know if the fiat 500 automatic need a gear box oil change ??
“Good for the life of the car” is what they’ll tell you. But change it every 80-100k miles if you care about the “life” of the car.
Why didn't you get the aluminum filter cap replacement?
Thank you for the video! Do you have a link for the replacement plug?

Great idea! I'll have to try that next time.
Thank you for your upload 🎉
Trouble getting it up? I think they have pills for that
It's just as likely that it was running the engine while taking it off the ramps filled the filter and filter housing that brought the oil level down.
Thought Fiat 500 uses 5w40 ideally although it can also use 5w30, but 5w40 is recommended
Thanks man!
Happy to help!
5w-40 and 4 qts. per manual.
😃
Thanks 👍👍👍

Get an oil extractor and save yourself from all this unnecessary work.
Yes, this is unfortunately one of the more involved oil changes...
“Don’t like getting it too close to full” you won’t overfill it like that.
Just add what the oil capacity is supposed to be and you won’t have issues.
If your low just top it off with water.
@@snakeplisken2123if you add water make sure to add a bit of detergent too help it mix
