- It runs east to west through the mountainous Shikoku region along the Shikoku Mountains. With a total length of more than 345 km, it is the longest national highway in Shikoku. The main passages are from the Tokushima-Honmachi intersection in Tokushima City, the starting point, to the Kyobashira Pass on the border of Mt. Since most of the intersecting national highways traverse Shikoku, they are also used as connecting roads between each other. It is also known as "Yosaku," which is a colloquial name for National Road No. 439.
The 80 km section in Tokushima Prefecture from the starting point in Tokushima City to Kenzan in Miyoshi City overlaps with other roads such as National Highway No. 192 and No. 438, so the highest section of National Highway No. 439 is west of Kenzan.
The road is known as one of the "steepest roads" in Shikoku, and in fact, with the exception of some overlapping sections with other national highways and sections that have been improved, most of the road has many narrow sections that are impassable to two-way traffic. It has long been introduced in motorcycle magazines as a representative example of a steep road under the name "Yosaku," and it is regarded as the most famous road in Japan and one of the "three most grueling roads in Japan" by enthusiasts.
The road has been featured on TV programs such as "Higashino/Okamura no Tabisaru: Private Sorry" and "Document 72 Hours.
In recent years, "Tour de Nishi Awa," a bicycle event that takes advantage of the harsh conditions of the road, has been held, attracting many people in early May, the day the event is held.
六年前関東から出掛けて徳島から四万十迄四輪ですけど走りました。路上の苔が多いので心配して見ていましたが無事でよかったです。四万十に着いてから晩御飯を食べに赤提灯に行き主に徳島から439で来ましたと言いましたら地元ではあんなところ通る人はいませんよと言われてしまいました。確かに杓子峠前後は映像では対向車は一台も無い様子、私の時も対向車はゼロでした。今度は四万十から徳島迄逆方向で走ってみたいと思います
ご視聴ありがとうございます。関東から来られましたか、長距離で大変でしたね。四国の中でも高知県は太陽の角度か剣山のせいなのか日陰が多いように感じます。
山間部には必ずと言って良いほどコケが道路にあるのでブラインドコーナーを抜けたとたんにコケ・・・の場面が有りました。
徳島生まれなので道路のコケには敏感になります。転けなくてよかった😅
今度来られる時は「四万十から徳島」までは山岳路なので途中でキャンプでも良いとも思います。特に剣山周辺は冬を過ぎても雪が残ってる場所があるのでご注意のほどご走行して下さい。

この時は道路に木が倒れていてバイクでやっと通れました。確か冬の期間はこのルートは閉鎖していると思います。
