@@TheMessMaker111 well I'm here because my ex girlfriend keeps using the hole in the ceiling in the empty back of my duplex as an excuse to stay with me rent free. Headed to home depot for everything I need first thing in the morn.. thanks for the video...
Thank you for these instructions! I've never done drywall repair other than smaller patches, but I just slipped in my attic and my right leg went through the ceiling.
I actually used this video the Fall of 2014 to help when I had to replace a section of water stained ceiling drywall. This helped me when I had to do drywall replacement work for the first time. I wanted to say you simply explained the basics of drywall repair and made seem easy for any first timer. Nice work and thanks so much!
Just what I needed. Great job, Jeff! Thank you. I am a retired journeyman/finish carpenter and general contractor, but no one ever learns everything. Decided to freshen up my memory for a very similar repair at home, and I am SO GLAD I found you. This is short, concise, accurate, and right on the money. Your sense of humor helps to make the video more enoyable and easy to absorb. I subscribed, and I'll be joining your email list. :)
I’ve watched countless videos on ceiling repairs. This was definitely my favorite. Love your demeanor and how well you explain everything. Well done! ⚡️
You have NO IDEA how much you have just helped me! One of my sons "helped" me repair some drywall and now it looks like I live in a rental house that crack addicts lived in. I can do the repairs myself, thanks to YOU!!! You are awesome!
You made my day L Warren - I'm so happy that this video helped you. Sorry to hear about your son's patch job. I'm sure he was trying to help the best he could. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Hello, found this again and it's just what I needed. This time I stepped through the floor boards in the attic and created a 2x4 hole! to I had to cut out the mess and then measure. It wasn't a perfect rectangle, but close. Good video.
Good vid for most DIY jobs. There's more than one way to do this, so disregard "the pros" and internet keyboard warriors. I've used techniques like yours for years. Works great, lasts forever, and saves a ton of money. Job well done and thanks for the effort of making the vid. Thumbs up.
Thanks for this tutorial, it was so well explained. Since my husband have been really busy, I decided to take matters under my hand and repair my ceiling. I am super happy with the results. Thanks again.
Excellent video Jeff. I'm not the guy you usually ask to help do home repairs and don't have a lot of skills. After watching this video (3 times) I set out to do this exact repair (water damaged ceiling 3'x4'). Except for my texturing method, it worked perfectly. Thanks.
I just punched a huge hole in my garage ceiling when I slipped off the truss and through the ceiling. Never done drywall before so I'm gonna see how this works by using your video. Thanks for showing us how to do it.
I came for education and stayed for the entertainment. Very awesome tips, and love text edited into the video haha. I'll have to browse more of your videos to see what else I can learn!

Great tutorial. I've done wall repair but never a ceiling. Now . . . yeah, I need to fix a 15"x15" area of ceiling that was where a wood burning stove chimney had passed through. Thank you. This was great info.
I don't know if you realize this, but when you teach, you blend learning styles very fluently. Great video! I was afraid of drywall until I saw this!!!
My wife went on a trip, leaving me alone with my three kids overnight for the first time. Things were going fine, then I got a call from work and decide to take it downstairs, away from the loud noises 3 boys under 10 make. I was in the middle of the call when I heard water dripping in the bathroom followed by a small crashing sound. I ended the call and ran into the bathroom and found that the bathroom ceiling ruptured, water and drywall everywhere. My wife had been gone for an hour and the house was literally falling apart. I ran upstairs to see where the leak was and discovered that my sons thought it would be a good idea to convert our upstairs bathroom into a water park, complete with slides and a small river. Thanks for making this video, hopefully, I can get this done before the next disaster.
Thanks for the detailed tutorial. I fix most things myself, but this is much easier than I thought. It cost me $500 for a contractor to fix a square a bit bigger following our last hurricane. I said...never again. Thanks !!!!
Thank you for this video Jeff! I already repaired two sections due to leaks and now I have a tub drain leak that caused a section I just repaired to be removed again!! I was so angry I was just going to hire someone to repair the drywall again but after watching this video, some of the tricks you showed me really opened my eyes!! I absolutely hate trying to match the shape but I was doing it backwards by trying to trim the new drywall piece to my hole size. I am going to try your method and also make my own joint compound instead of buying it and maybe I will enjoy the repair this time haha yeah right, but thank you!!! You saved me hundreds!
I have a place in my ceiling where it kind of "bubbled" down. Which is why I looked up this video. I am not a natural with my hands, more of a math guy, lol. Anyway, I can usually figure things out and get it done with instruction, I feel a lot more comfortable now fixing the ceiling myself after seeing this video. Looks doable. Even for me. Thanks.
Excellent video! Extremely informative and helpful...FINALLY, someone who knows how to EDIT! So nice that you got right to the point, no three minutes of drivel and sappy twangy music. Very thorough video explanation. I have a similar situation. I'm not very handy myself but I wanna give it a try and save money. I would just live it as it is because it is inside a closet but need to replace because it has mold now.
I was looking at a few videos and didn't really care for them, yours I liked. I'm going to be replacing about 4ftx2ft of drywall in my moms kitchen. a branch had fallen and caused a leak in the ceiling. Nothing was done about it and after a while the kitchen light fell from the ceiling. Managed to get someone in the family to fix the roof. I'm terrified of heights so no roof action for me. Now i'm excited after watching hour video and seeing how easy it really is I'll be doing it this week! Got her a new light too. Much nicer looking than what she had. Just got tired of waiting on my siblings or other family members that keep saying they know how to do it and will... it's been like a year they haven't done anything!
Water truely is insidious in homes. A lot of the time that’s caused by clogged AC condensate lines. Home Depot sells zep and it will save you thousands on repairs. Me and my dad flipped houses to get our mansions in the 90s.
much needed I just walked in the kitchen to get a Reese chocolate and saw a huge busy from all the paint I was like wtf and I just slowly walked out i didn't get my chocolate now I can with the patch thanks so much 👍
Excellent video. I wanted to add two things: 1) From experience, be very careful using a permanent Sharpie on any area on drywall that won't be covered in joint compound. It is VERY hard to cover with paint, water-based primer-- or even hard-core, super-covering shellac-based primer. I use a fat carpenter's pencil. (Maybe that wasn't a Sharpie Jeff was using, but I thought I'd add that $.02, based on much regret from personal experience.) 2) If you have popcorn-style ceilings, they sell powder (to mix with water) for larger areas, similar to Jeff's Easy Sand 45-- OR smaller premixed tubs OR spray cans like Homax at HomeD. The upspray cans are expensive, however, and are only for SMALL sections and I've used with varying degrees of efficacy; works best between 68-72 degrees. (Homax at HomeD or Lowe's.) BEWARE: Popcorn ceilings older than 1978ish could contain asbestos. I dig the trick of cutting your patch piece, using IT as a template by outlining on ceiling, THEN cutting the hole it will fit. Thanks!
+Josh Campbell thank you for the great tips. I'd recommend a pencil also, much easier to paint than a Sharpie. And yes, popcorn ceilings can be very dangerous. Always good to stay safe
Jeff Patterson I was trying to install a new unit on my ceiling and I had to have my kid holding the other end. Unfortunately it was not successful due to bad frame on the unit not closing property. I will try to replace just a ballast this weekend to see. My units are completely dead.
