  • Ever since I first heard this song, it's become one of my favourite songs to play along to. The section at around 2:27 is definitely one of the coolest and hardest grooves to really nail and play tight.
I've covered this song before and posted it on RUclips and Instagram, but this time I figured that I'd actually record it (semi-)properly rather than using my shitty GoPro/iPhone audio quality.

Hey could you maybe explain what's going on at 2:27 with the drums? This is almost the hardest thing in my entire life that I've had to try and learn

I'll do my best to explain over text haha. So that section is in 12/8, meaning you can still count 4 downbeats but there's a triplet feel rather than a straight 8th or 16th note feel. My hands are playing all of the 8th note triplets in the bar, just alternating between the hats and the snare. On the snare, I'm ghosting every note except for the backbeat on 2&4 and I'm playing the kick on 1, 3 and the second partial of beat 4.
What makes this groove really cool but kinda tricky is that you've gotta accent every other note you play on the hats, starting with beat one. Then, midway through the groove, you play all the left hand ghost notes on the hats as well but you keep playing 2&4 on the snare.
The reason this all sounds so tough but cool is essentially because you're playing a 3 over 4 polyrhythm (3 accents on the hats, 4 accents on kick/snare, both of which take up the space of one full bar) and also the groove is played pretty damn fast haha. I'd recommend starting much slower, and start by playing the triplets between the hands, but only accent the backbeat on the snare first (don't worry about the hats). Once you're comfortable with that, add the kick. Then once you've got that locked in, add the displaced accents on the hats as well and keep practicing until you get it up to speed!
It's such a fun but weird groove man, took me a while to get it right as well, and I still mess it up every other time I go to play it hahaha. I hope that helped man! Let me know if you need clarification on anything!
