The original music video is different than the live, but not in a bad way. There's pig squeals in the original. And the video tells a haunting story. It's still worth watching. It's an iconic video.

Megitsune quite possibly is the epitome of what Babymetal is to me. This song was just as good in its original form as it is now. It has truly stood the the test of time and will still be amazing a decade from now. Was the #1 performance I was most excited about when seeing them in Nashville this summer and I was on the rail for the entire set

One of the elements that you don't hear at all or very well during the live performances but really stands out on the official video/studio version are the pig squeals during the breakdown. I believe Megitsune is the only BABYMETAL song that has them and they make the breakdown sound so brutal! 🤘🦊🤘

Nice reaction guys. Not to worry I think. The original mv is such a representation of the time it was made and ages of the gals that you don't really end up wanting to compare them. They are wonderful statements from skilled performers in different settings and different times in their lives. That said this PIA Arena version really is fire.

Megitsune was the first single released by Babymetal as an independent act after separating from their parent Idol group Sakura Gakuin in 2013. As mentioned, the studio version (used for the official MV) provides a wonderful documentation of Su-’s voice immediately following the adolescent change. A must-hear for any Su- admirer. I am grateful that producer Kobametal even left in the artifacts of her inhales.
Su- was encouraged to sing the song in Japanese Enka style. And while at age 15 she couldn't do the melodramatic wide vibrato seemingly characteristic of the style, we do get to hear her wonderfully sweet narrow vibrato especially as she belts out the final chorus. In the Nemophila cover Mayu does add that vibrato in at least one place while still honoring the Su-metal performance standard overall.
The song itself has a special feature in that the melody used in the breakdown (and the intro in this PIA performance) is an old and well-known Japanese folk song: Sakura Sakura (Cherry Blossoms).
The official MV has its special moments as well. It opens with Yui and Moa pulling on the obi (sash) holding Su-chan's kimono as she twirls and transforms into Su-metal. And later in the song there is the spoken line where [spoiler redacted].
The official MV was my introduction to Babymetal back in 2015 and my first reaction was summed up by a later reactor who said: "They're kids! They're just kids!" 😅 But everything about the song, the performance, the production, and the palpable charisma of those "kids" made me a fan for life. 🤘🦊

  • @Killem911
    @Killem911 3 месяца назад +15

Great reaction guys! The official mv is surely worth watching/reacting to since not only it gives you an insight into Su’s voice and vocal abilities 10 years ago but also provides some visual background infos about the song :). Any live version sounds great tho, so there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Oh btw don’t apologise for picking the Glastonbury version for Shanti x3, to me it sounded ok but several other songs of that performance were plaqued with sound issues, bad sound mix, etc, which is why the fans recommend to avoid it.
Megitsune is defo a fan favourite and usually a stable part of their show. As such, they played it last Saturday (March 2nd) at the Legend MM show and I had the pleasure to enjoy it at the Yokohama Arena and it was fantastic as always. 🤘🔥🦊

    Megitsune /メギツネ. メ-meh, ギ -ghee, ツ -tsu, ネ -neh. Meh-ghee-tsu-neh. The "g" is a hard G like in gun. Like the word "key" but with a g instead of a k.

Great reaction, glad you guys finally checked this one out! You’re right, this is one of the best versions out there.
Su’s spoken part is a quote from a Japanese gangster movie. Similar vibes as if someone quoted Scarface, but the female version.
    Other suggestions:
*For festivals:* Metrock 2015 has some of the best crowd moments, but all songs you’ve checked out. There are logo’d videos for copyrights.
*Night Night Burn (Legend Metal Galaxy 2020):* Flamenco/Salsa!
*Kagerou (Legend Metal Galaxy 2020):* Kami West solos!
*Divine Attack (Pia Arena MM):* Su wrote this song, and one of my favorites.
*Light and Darkness (Pia Arena MM):* A melodic song with epic vocals and some awesome guitar and drum fills.
*Syncopation (Fox Festival 2017):* One of their first songs that has a more mature feel from their 2nd album.
*No Rain No Rainbow (Official, Live / Legend S):* Another Su-solo, and an emotional metal ballad, copyright warnings though.
    Look forward to more! 🤘🦊

My dad told me something years ago and I’ve been able to apply it in a lot of different situations in life:
“Some people demand respect, and some people command respect…always strive for the latter.”
I’ve watched a lot of Babymetal reactions of this song, but this is the first time I’ve viewed this particular video.
Watching Su-Metal on stage and seeing how she handles the crowds so effortlessly has always been impressive, but her performance here is simply amazing.
This is the first time I can honestly say that what my dad told me about demanding vs commanding respect can apply to Su-Metal’s presence on stage.
I’d be willing to bet a jar of dirt that her confidence on stage helps relax the rest of the band as well as the entire crew.

Great reaction - and yes do watch the official video - then watch the commentary video the girls made talking through the official video. This is the song that probably represents everything BABYMETAL are better than any other.
This was a great live version of course, but the official video is also one of their best. Actually virtually every different performance is great (my own favourite is from the Red Fox Festival in 2017 where they had an all female audience - all singing along ... very apt since this is a female empowerment song).
This song often tops fan polls for their favourite song - it is also the song they have played live more than any other. It is not an easy song to sing either - Su uses it for sound checks and to test her voice.

Gotta say that, like the Metali song nine years later, Megitsune is full of Japanese cultural expressions (including onomatopoeia, kakegoe &, from what I understand, archaic words). Accordingly, it's mindblowing that BM first got to record it in their mid-teens (2014), how strikingly grown-up the theme was (truly a bold attempt to break away from Sakura Gakuin's idol music), how high-pitched & clear-voiced Su was then & now (despite the frenetic pacing & frequent key changes).
I had begun following BM in the Chinese cyberspace years ago, where lyric fansubs are separate from their English counterparts. Anyway, the following are my re-translations from my own notes. Maybe it can help give another perspective.
    (So-re tsu! [x3] So-re so-re so-re so-re tsu!) [so-re = kakegoe exhortation]
A kitsune all dressed up [kitsune = fox]
(Chiki-chiki wasshoi! [x2]) [chiki = onomatopoeia here for 'sneaky'; wasshoi = kakegoe exhortation]
Twin ponytails flapping in the wind
(Hira-hira wasshoi! [x2]) [hira = onomatopoeia for fluttering]
    Poof, and i vanish
(Kuru-kuru wasshoi! [x2]) [kuru = onomatopoeia for whirling]
Now watch me morph into my transformations
(Kon-kon kon kokon kon kokon) [kon = onomatopoeia for fox barks]
    (So-re tsu! [x3] so-re so-re so-re so-re tsu!) [x2]
A maiden from an ancient age
    I dance in passing dreams
    Across thousands of years
    And living in the moment
Ah ah, yes, women might always be born actors
But we're not bad kitsunes [x2]
We're merely megitsunes [megitsune = girlish vixen]
Ah ah, we girls will blossom into yamato nadeshiko [floral metaphor for 'idealized woman']
Smiling with our faces, crying on the inside
Saying words like "so yo ne" ["i think so too"]
    And never showing our tears
    [Instrumental break]
    Kitsune kitsune, we are megitsunes
Women are born actors [i.e. "very good at disguising ourselves"]
    Soi-ya soi-ya soi-ya! [x3] So-re so-re so-re so! [soi-ya = kakegoe exhortation]
    Soi-ya soi-ya soi-ya! [x3] So-re so-re so-re so!
    So-re tsu! [x3] so-re so-re so-re so-re tsu!
    so-re tsu! [x3] so-re so-re so-re so-re tsu!
A maiden from an ancient age
    I sing in passing dreams
    Across thousands of years
And living here in modern times
Ah ah, yes, women might always be born actors
But we're not bad kitsunes [x2]
We are maidens "not to be underestimated" [spoken]
Ah ah, we girls will blossom into yamato nadeshiko
    Never ever gonna disappear
Just like fireworks eternally across the night sky
Ah ah, women who bloom are doomed with unhappy fates
Smiling with our faces, crying on the inside
    I'm merely a pure-hearted megitsune
    Ah ah~
[FYI The women national soccer team is also nicknamed 'Nadeshiko Japan'.]

I agree with the other commenters. Watching official music video is a different experience. They are soooo adorable, and it's a coming of age story from a much younger perspective. That awkward age, when nothing makes sense, but somehow you everything. Btw, a suggestion to react to a live performance would be Black Baby Metal performing Onedari Daisakusen. There are many versions, but your choice lies with an older version with Yui-Metal, or a solo act with Moa-metal. Either way, they are both incredible.

    Some comments
    * Generally Babymetal shall be viewed in a live video recorded in a large venue in Japan. The interaction with the Japanese audience is sick!
    * The music videos for Megitsune and BxMxC are top notch. They need to be seen, no matter if you first see some live stuff.
    * The first music video called Doki Doki Morning is a must see for every Babymetal fan.
    * The Babymetal Death from the Legend 1997 concert is also a must see, but you need to understand what it is about.

Great reaction guys. Yes even though you have reacted to many of their great song/performances you have really just scratched the surface as there so many more that you have yet to discover.
Regarding Glastonbury I think many here will agree that it was the worst outside venue to watch them perform because the BBC which was in charge of that festival did an incompetent job with sound production (mics turned off, incorrect sound levels etc.)
Suggest Rising Sun Rock Festival for some great outdoor LIVE performances.

Their arena shows this year i feel have really stepped up. Su-Metals English ability has also improved significantly. Metisune is not a easy track for Su. Along with Devine Attack which Su-Metal wrote. As they are in her upper tier register.
Some of their most challenging tracks like Rondo of Nightmare. Along with Tales of Destinies, which was a Tribute to Dream Theatre"s Dance of Eternity BTW.
Haven't been performed in years & wish they would add them back in. I get the challenge, but it would really significantly boost their live shows here. While Babymetal is brilliant live usually.
They did struggle a bit last year up until about mid tour. Su-Metal looked overworked and burnt out but she has, since course, corrected.
The shows really since their performances with Bring Me the Horizon last year at Nex_Fest has shown a pretty significant evolution.
Being on tour as long as they have now is really starting to show in their performances, and this one is no exception. Great reactions here & agree about the Nemophila Metisune covers. Nemophila are huge fans, so it makes sense here. :)

I will only add to the other comments that you really should seek out some of the many fancams of this performed in smaller venues. You'll get to see Moa's hengao moments at that one particular spot in the song in which Su picks up the mask and faces her. Moa always does some sort of silly facial expression, or says something to cause the others to crack up.

babymetal's crowds and of course the band itself is just something else... its always such fun to watch them play in japan or somewhere there.. saw them live in 2023 in germany.. great perfomance.. weak crowd sadly.. :( but it made my year to saw them finally live.

Megitsune as Su pronounces it in the song (you are closer than most tho) ... the 'git' sounds like a cowboy saying 'git' to his horse or to a kid like 'git' on outta here Me git su ne (at least to my ears)

I should give you some context on what happened on the Glastonbury video. I know you guys like interesting live sets, and suggested that because it's a good one. I didn't know that some of the fans have a problem with it though, and I'm sorry it got brigaded. I hope it didn't cause too much grief.
This issue is that Glastonbury always sells out before the line-up is announced, so the fans couldn't get tickets when Babymetal was confirmed. Some of them are frustrated that they couldn't be there and feel that the band didn't get the audience they deserved. Most Babymetal fans aren't the gatekeeping type though, and I hope you continue to explore their performances.

Although the crowd was a bit lame (understandable, they're a pop/main stream music crowd ... but they did enjoy BABYMETAL) the main issue people have with the Glastonbury videos is the BBC's substandard audio (the camerawork left a lot to be desired too) - among other issues the second mic for the bass drums never got plugged in and the girls' mics were often very low or intermittently not working.
To be fair 'Shanti Shanti Shanti' is probably the least effected by the BBC's deficiencies of the Glastonbury videos.

    • @iaingeo
      @iaingeo 3 месяца назад

There was nothing wrong with the double kick. The solo section in RoR at 3:45 is probably where it's clearest, but it's all over the set.
Even if there had been a problem, blaming the BBC is simply wrong. They don't go near stage audio. The sound is produced by RG Jones, and they provide audio feeds to the BBC. And a band the size of Babymetal has drum techs to mic the kit. They're not asking contractors to do it.
This is why I pointed out that your script doesn't add up. I get that you're still angry, but it's clearly not for the reasons you say.

    • @Grington300
      @Grington300 3 месяца назад

@@iaingeo The stage sound was fine, it was the BBC live stream audio that sucked.
Not angry at all ... the fact they enjoyed that one is what really matters, all I've done is explain why people don't usually recommend the Glastonbury videos for a first listen, there are live versions where they would have had a better audio experience.

Well, I've explained how you can hear for yourself that the assertions you read under that reddit post weren't real, and couldn't possibly be real given the way sound works at Glastonbury. But you do you I guess. 🤷
I should let you know, though, that turning up en masse in the comments with your demands is not being helpful, it's bullying. And we know a song about that.
I've already outstayed my welcome in this comment section so I'll leave it there.

    • @Grington300
      @Grington300 3 месяца назад

@@iaingeo I've made absolutely no demands, I didn't complain in the comments (I enjoyed the reaction despite the choice of video) and I don't know what reddit post you are referring to, all I have done is try to explain to YOU what a lot of people think about the Glastonbury videos and why they are not generally recommended for first reactions.
I wasn't arguing with you, simply trying to explain my understanding of why some people may not have been so happy with the choice.
I guess we're both better off if we leave it there.

should have watched the MV first on this one. It is best to watch Babymetal songs around the time the album the song was on came out. There is a lot of recent bias. We all love Momoka but Yui did exist. F'ing dirtbags. The Nemophila cover is really good too. Another great Japanese band. Try akatsuki black night, uki uki midnight mv, rondo of nightmares, awadama fever

The song that more or less derailed Kobas planing. He only wanted to get rid of the devilsymbol, but with this song his Kitsune got in Japan a completly new meaning. A Symbol of female Empowerment. The song changed the meaning of the old tales completly by simply looking at these tales from the perspective of the Megitsune. It didn't want to be part of a play it simply tried to do what was expected from her but it wasn't good enough. That is what his girls wanted to see in this song. And this resonated wth their female fans so strong that the sign got a meaning far outside of the metal scene and at the same time it brought many female fans into their concerts.

Your efforts to pronounce Japanese band names and song titles is much appreciated.
In this case it's "meh-gee-tsoo-neh", with those syllable breaks.
The "ts" is pronounced like the end of the word "hats".
Of course they spell it out in katakana in the music video, メギツネ, but that's not necessarily super helpful at this point. : )

And the "PIA" in PIA Arena is pronounced like one word, not initials.
