    I love my blue SRPD52K1. Here in Norway it cost something like $324 - including our outrageous 25% VAT. It's got the same movement as a "Blue Moon" Presage, is cheaper and has better water resistance. What's not to love? If anything, it feels a bit on the small side, as the lug to lug distance is very short, but overall it's a great watch. Want to go diving? Get a diver's watch. This is not a diver's watch, so what do you need a glow pip for? If I need to wear something more sturdy than this, I put on my G-Shock. The Oyster-style bracelet is well made and beautiful - the stamped clasp is not a big drawback. As my first Seiko I feel I made the perfect choice. Next Seiko will probably be a "Blue Moon" or one of the new iterations of a "Flighty".Or maybe that black and beautiful SRPB55K1. Edit: Just remembered I had a Seiko when I was a kid - It was a gold colored Quartz with both analog and digital time. But my new Seiko 5 is the first Seiko in decades.

    At the price I would build with online parts, superior cases are available, coated sapphire crystal, great selection of crowns that screw down with triple seals, strapcode bracelet, ceramic or sapphire bezel that are lumed,etc. I do like the movement Seiko uses on this 5 selection . I would also like a 38mm or 37mm case if it would be available at some point

    How many people referring to ISO requirements know what they are? Because if any of you had bothered to look up the ISO 6425 specifications, you'd know that 200m water resistance and a screw-down crown are NOT part of the requirements! 100m is enough for an ISO dive watch. The one spec that I think these Seiko 5s fail to meet is a luminous indicator (lume pip) on the bezel.
    I just bought an SRPD73K2 (the vintage-styled one with fauxtina and a silicone strap) at The Bay in Canada (an upper-end department store) on sale for only US$220. I bought it not as an SKX replacement -- which it is not -- but because it is a gorgeous watch with hacking, something that I find useful on a daily basis. It would actually cost me more to buy an SKX here in Canada, and I'd have to get it either online or at a specialty watch store, not a major retailer.

      What people are not getting is market sets the price..
      More people are choosing to pay what Seiko is asking vs a chinese/micro brand is asking even if the micro is better made and cheaper.
      Seiko is looking at the main market who doesn't delve into details like WIS do. They care about brand recognition and aesthetics not ISO/hx, screw Down, etc...
      The WIS is 1% of the intended target so Seiko makes what appeals to the other 99%.

    These five Seiko 5 watches are little more than Submariner homages. Seiko 5 formerly sold for $50 to $150, but these will soon retail for $225 to $375! I have to be impressed with the nerve of Seiko to market these ho-hum watches through large department stores where they can parlay their once-good-name at new obscenely higher prices to unsuspecting buyers. Seiko is relegating themselves to be the fashion watch of 2020. Little more than a pretty face.

Are these new Seiko 5 selling well, or are you getting resistance because of the higher pricing Seiko has done?

    I don't really care about the discontinuing of the SKX - it never struck me as a watch worth the $200 asking price, but the move by Seiko here leaves a bad taste in my mouth. They're dumbing down all the specs of the original SKX, popping in an updated $50 movement, and then charging $100 more. I hear so many people complaining about the new srpd Sekio 5 being only 100m and not iso certified. The new Seiko 5 srpd is not a replacement for the skx, it's a replacement for the snzf series (sea urchin). The old snzf 7S movement did not have hacking or manual wind, so the new 4R is an improvent. Also the snzf was rated for 100m and sold for around 180 dollars which is in line with what these new srpd Seiko 5's are selling for in department stores. So for all those complaining how about how the new srpd's are inferior to the old skx's, do some research. The turtle and the samurai are the true replacement for the skx.

    Regarding complaints about the non-screw-down crown and 100-meter water resistance on these Seiko 5's, most people who buy dive watches like these aren't divers. And those who do dive don't need every watch they own to be suitable for that purpose. Really, one will do. When I go into the water with a watch, I wear my $75 Casio Duro, for the simple reason that I don't need to stress about whether it gets water-damaged, broken, scuffed, lost, or stolen. I save my more expensive watches for less punishing activities. Each to his/her own.

    The burgundy red one with gold hands and indices is really nice!! it's a shame you don't have that model.. I have one and it's gorgeous!!
    I kinda understand all the hate for these but the burgundy and the full black one are really awesome!!

    I ended up purchasing the blacked out SBSA025. I like it. The lume isn’t great like a turtle’s. For a sub-$200 piece it is excellent. The SKX is cool but I can’t wait to see people modding these new Seiko5s.

    I want the daydate to match the dial. Sold a (not sports) blue Seiko 5 and bought a black because I wanted the daydate to match.
    Might be picking up one of these later for a lower price. Sure the price is good but you can pick up a mini turtle for example for around the same and that's a better watch. Seiko is the greatest brand in the world

    I think they're good looking watches. I can see where Seiko are going with these - trying to appeal to the mass market, as in people buying from a jeweller and not necessarily an afficionado.

    Marc very honestly and in a polite way stated Seiko doesnt give a shit what we want. They have snubbed us in a big way. That's what makes Marc cool besides a watch seller he is a true enthusiast and tells the truth

    Thanks for the presentation. It's always interesting to see what Seiko is doing in the market place and I get their strategy as you have explained it. I'm also glad they will be getting a market share here in department stores. But.... Considering the Bottle Cap I bought from you a little less than a year ago, these 5's are over-priced. The Bottle Cap has a unique design and the same hacking and winding movement. These are SKX clones.... I'd rather have my authentic SKX with inferior movement any day.... OR, your Islander!

    Am I misstaken or does the new 5 come in green and one blacked out with red hands and indecies?
    Oh yes,, 100 m wr is fine to swim with.

    Yes they're nice Seiko 5's , but they're not an SKX (ISO diver) and for slightly more money you can get a turtle.

    If they had sapphire crystal and a ceramic bezel then yeah I may have bought one but at around 260 quid for mineral and aluminium, I think I'll pass.

    In my opinion hand winding and hacking are more important than a screw down crown

  • @Iberian247
    @Iberian247 4 года назад

    I’ll admit, they are gorgeous, but not making it a screw-down crown was a misguided decision. The good news for modders is that we will probably be able to buy those cool new dials from their parts dealers.

    Forget these Seiko 5, have you seen the new Alpinist? Black, cream and green dial. Two of which have cyclops. All with Prospex logo, probably around 700 USD.

    • @islandwatch
      @islandwatch  4 года назад

      That for 700 is worth it, but this for 300 isn't? I don't see how that is 2x the watch, from a seller's perspective.

      @@islandwatch That's the thing, I don't think the new Alpinist is worth the 77,000 yen Seiko is asking for either. I don't see that watch being 2x the old Alpinist.

    They're beautiful, solid watches that will serve their owners for many years. However, it seems to me the Orient Mako/Ray/Kamasu are a much better value, for roughly similar features. Orient Ray II is going for $125-150 right now. And going up to a sapphire crystal on a Kamasu is $220-250. Thoughts?

    I didn't mind these when i thought they were gonna be like $100-$150 but the fact that these go for close to $300 is insane. Why would anyone pay $300 for one of these when they can get a turtle for around the same price.

    I have two Invicta divers here with nh35 internals. They work fine, they look okay I guess if you van forgive the mirror finish on the link centres that seems to be magnetic to scratching stuff. The Grand diver cost me £106 from Amazon, the 3045 roughly the same. They too have a non sapphire crystal that seems as scratch resistant as Hardlex so far. These Seiko 5 prices are comedy level when you consider what they contain.
    The current US-only priced Orient crazy bargain $199 Makos looks like Epson doesn't want to have the 5 range in cabinets beside existing-priced Orient stock as it'll make them look just what they are. Cheap watches pitched far too high $value.
