The OEM rims look so much better than the aftermarket set that were on the truck. All in all the truck seems to be in decent shape. I think you did good on the trade and now you have some new projects to make content on. I really like the headlamps you went with.
Matt you really nailed it on this one. I just bought my brother's 2004 Sierra and it needs almost everything you've covered here. Thanks for the demonstration video
This truck is a perfect example of someone who did took care of it during winter by washing it but salt of course will make its way through those cavities as shown on the bed. I wish we had another way of melting snow/ice rather than salt
For all the Rust you don’t want to spread use owatrol oil it sinks into the rust and then hardens. You can even paint over it or use fluid film or other wax based undercoatings over it. Trust me on this one - this combo absolutely stops rust dead in its tracks
That's basically the exact truck I'd buy if I was in the market for a truck. The Sierras with the color matched bumpers just flat out look better then the cateyes. Also welcome to the L33 club. Swapped my 04 Z71 tahoe with that engine last summer and love it.
Just when I thought this channel couldn't get any better. A very nice find and great work. I had a hard time finding a loaded gmt800 (similar trim level and same configuration) without some minor rust, and I live in an area that doesn't see salt but twice a year (mostly "mud" rust). I definitely want to do some mods similar to yours. Im looking forward to this truck, as well as your other rides.
Good looking sierra. Those wheels complement that truck well. Got to love white! Hides a lot, wears well, cool in the summer, easy to touch up / repaint areas.
Nice truck, my favorite body style as well. Gives me more motivation to start cleaning up my '06 VortecMax Sierra, has about the same amount of miles as yours.
I learned doing the headliner in my e46 to spray the glue and lay it down in small sections starting in the middle. The tight curves around the handles and the center controls lifted first.
Get this product called OSPHO for that minor rust. Trust me it works. You can RUclips it because that’s where I found out about it. The stuff is awesome. With that hole in the fender well. Cut it out with some decent ends away from the rust and use the cutout as a pattern to make a mirror patch piece and tack it in and spray on some under coat.
Headliner foam is removed with a dual action sander. The edge of the sanding disk slides under the foam and strips it off. I normally used 220 grit. Repairing the backer is simple enough with spray glue and let it set up, then cover the repair spot with duct tape.
Agreed, besides the Tahoe is a better looking vehicle than the caddy in my opinion. And, you can haul a lot of wonderful used, low-mile LS engines in it, parts run?. LOL Enjoy Matt.
If the 4x4 switch doesn’t fix the issue, you may need to replace the Transfer Case Control Module Encoder Ring. I had to do that on mine. It would randomly go into 4Hi, and wouldn’t let me change it. Turning off the truck would usually correct the issue (and when this happened, the service 4x4 would come up on the DIC. Once I started it up and it showed 4lo, I decided it needed to be addressed. Thankfully it’s an easy fix and if I recall correctly, about a $20-25 OEM part.
I've had the same brand tonneau for probably 5 or 6 years. at bout 4.5 the rubber started coming off so I superglued it on and its good as new. It should last you a while
Pull all those 4x4 parts out and swap an NP149!!! Transfer case, front driveshaft, lock the front axle and you're good to go. I did it last fall in my 06 Silverado, it's been awesome all winter.
Usually just changing the 4x4 switch will take care of the issue you’re describing. Yes, I know it seems counter intuitive but it worked on all my GMT 800s.
Drain all your power steering fluid and replace it with Honda brand power steering fluid. I don’t know what they put in it. But I’ve had it bring back a few whining power steering pumps.
Matt. Make sure you fluid film the hell out of that truck. If you've watched any South Main Auto videos, you'll know. Being an NY guy yourself, you know that cars rot out in a few years. But fluid film is some of the best stuff ever. I had a clean 04 Z71 Burb in 2023, traded it for a 13 Cruze LTZ RS and that car gave me 25k trouble free miles and sits at 230k right now. That burb was the cleanest GMT800 ive had, out of the 5 I've owned, but the interior was too far gone.
Get skyco ospho to remove and convert the rust Use tape on the door drains, then soak the inside of the doors with ospho. I used raptorliner to coat and seal the in side of the doors.
Take the 4x4 switch out and reflow the solder on the switch circuit board. Common theme among the GMT-800 platform is cold solder joints. Headlight switch, cluster, 4x4 switch, abs pump module all suffer from this.
Harry’s in hazelton has some nice oem white door handles, I was just there Saturday 1/25. And I have a really nice set of oem Escalade chrome interior handles if you’re interested.
I’m going to do white handles at some point, I just don’t have time to make a run to Harry’s yet. You can also get white handles on ebay for pretty cheap new.
Look into evaporust to clean up the bottoms of the doors or ospho. If you can get evaporust in the door and on the rust with damp rags it may solve the problem.
I got the 2015-style Boost Auto keyfob and the buttons are almost worn away a year and a half later on a truck I use once a week 😒. Maybe the newer style lasts longer?
When you see enough of these trucks you know what factory rockers look like, and those have definitely had panels slapped over the rotted out rockers. Always makes me mad when I look at a truck for sale that had that done
Bro i have to tell you just in case you didnt know, for these gmt 800 they have the LED headlights plug and play you dont do anything but connect them no need to put bulbs in and the beam pattern is unmatched from just a regular bulb swap. My dad has a 21 silverado and with them side by side in the drivers seat of both there is no difference check them out bro !!!
I’ve replaced two headliners. I refuse to deal with all that sticky foam. Now I just take them out and bring them to an upholstery shop. Only charged me $150 to do a Lexus RX headliner.
I had the service 4x4 in my 03 z71 burb. Dorman 4wd switch 901-072 fixed it. I have some videos of my GMT800 burb, GMT400 k1500 and squarebody on my channel.
The 4x4 problem is either the switch on the dash, the grounds, or the Encoder motor sensor is going out. My 05 Avalanche did the same thing and occasionally when i turned the truck over it would display randomly in 4 Auto, 4 hi, etc. replaced the sensor (30 minute job) and all is well now.
Would be interesting to know if Rust Remover Gel is sold in the US? I have used some to clean up rust spots in my cars though they aren't as bad as the rust there
Im 20 minutes into this video and it already makes me miss my 2005 seirra, same features as yours but mine was victory red with silver birch mattalic two tone and i had a sliding back glass, and wayyyy more rot, like alot, thing originally was from massivetwoshits then it became a cny truck
There's a channel called Vehcor with a guy named Scott, he's in Chicago and he does a lot of videos of rebuilding vehicles, he has at least one detailed video on doing a GM headliner. He also has what he calls Scotts GM emporium, give him a try.
Don't worry, you'll be able to change that headliner when it falls down as soon as it gets warm out. I do not believe that glue will set up properly in that cold of temperature and I think that's what your problem was with the original one. Just my opinion
It be nice if boost auto parts gives you a discount code for the wireless charger. Been wanting one, but don't want to pay as much as they are asking for.
Radar renegades are actually a really good tire and good tire company. Read up on them. Completely carbon neutral company and they donate a lot. Those renegade are a little loud but good tires .
You made the right decision on wheels. Stock looks great. Especially in white.
When I saw the title, I was so excited. Lol I love these trucks. The escalator was fun, but this is gonna be fun too.
The 4x4 problem is most likely the 4x4 switch in the dash. They're super common to go, and usually randomly throw the message.
Thanks for the demonstration video
note to self, never repair a headliner.
great vid. I am going to use some spray glue on the few peeling edges of my 2003 headliner
This truck is a perfect example of someone who did took care of it during winter by washing it but salt of course will make its way through those cavities as shown on the bed. I wish we had another way of melting snow/ice rather than salt
Just can’t resist the GMT800 can you Matt?
Nope!
Best era of trucks GM ever made.
Cloud you blame him 😅
Yooo Matt where’d you get the seat leather and cushions from ❓ Have an 03 Yukon and need mine done. Thnx in advance ❗️🤙🏾
@@lsxmattI can't either I got a GMT800 Suburban that I absolutely LOVE

Trust me on this one - this combo absolutely stops rust dead in its tracks
Nooooo I was learning to work on my Escalade with your videos 😭
Throw it in the trash, they’re garbage, get you an 800 Escalade, more reliable
@@SDPP992 whats an 800 escapade?
@@gregorysalazar6425I believe it’s the 2005 Escalade and prior. I have an 04 Escalade and would highly recommend getting one.
Nah they’re not bad. Owned a 2007 Escalade L92 non DOD, loved that thing except for the awd.
That's basically the exact truck I'd buy if I was in the market for a truck. The Sierras with the color matched bumpers just flat out look better then the cateyes. Also welcome to the L33 club. Swapped my 04 Z71 tahoe with that engine last summer and love it.
That was a ton of work in one video. Glad to see the GMT 800 love.
Holy shit.. solid rockers! Didn’t think they existed. Def cooler than the caddy
The Suburban & Tahoes have the name too.
Just when I thought this channel couldn't get any better. A very nice find and great work. Love it! Can’t wait to see what else is in store!
Good looking sierra. Those wheels complement that truck well. Got to love white! Hides a lot, wears well, cool in the summer, easy to touch up / repaint areas.
Those wheels you swapped for are so nuch nicer than the black ones that were on it
Oh yeah!!! I’m waiting for all the videos on this one, thanks Matt!!
Nice truck, my favorite body style as well. Gives me more motivation to start cleaning up my '06 VortecMax Sierra, has about the same amount of miles as yours.
Fuel tank pressure sensor was the problem for my check engine evap code on 2003 suburban. It’s on top of fuel tank where the fuel pump sits.
Truck looks amazing
I learned doing the headliner in my e46 to spray the glue and lay it down in small sections starting in the middle. The tight curves around the handles and the center controls lifted first.

Matt that truck will be mint when you are all done kept going!
It looks good for a Sierra but I am gonna miss that Escalade, though
always have love for lowered truck!!
Those Wheels look great on there
You should do the oem paint matched door handles and paint matched mirror caps
That thing came out super clean!! Very nice work!
Headliner foam is removed with a dual action sander.
The edge of the sanding disk slides under the foam and strips it off. I normally used 220 grit.
Repairing the backer is simple enough with spray glue and let it set up, then cover the repair spot with duct tape.
I’m going to remember that

Damn it! Now I need to buy a truck...
Finally some more GMT800 action!
Sweet!
Matt got a pickup, SICK!
MORE GMT800!!!! My favorite!
“It’s only going to go lower from here” 👀 Matt with a lowered truck 💯💯
Beautiful truck! I have an 07 Classic cat eye. Same rims but black, I also have an L33 it’s a beast!! Love the content!
I’m excited to see this series
What a great truck! Time for a cam :)
Yesssir love the video cheers matt
Not a bad trade, especially knowing you still have Tahiti!😎💪🏾
Yeah she wasn’t going anywhere, Tahiti is basically new at this point haha.
I've had the same brand tonneau for probably 5 or 6 years. at bout 4.5 the rubber started coming off so I superglued it on and its good as new. It should last you a while
Thats good to know, 5 years is pretty good for a cheap cover like that.
Nice truck. Marries well to the Tahoe.
I Just subscribed and really enjoyed how much work was done in the video also the truck looks great!
And that truck sits perfect bro
I like it. Needs a little work, but, it's cool. Lookin forward to the upgrades...

I got my headliner fabric at hobby lobby, 67in long enough to go over thr edges

it looks sharp man

T1 Silverado brake swap when it comes time for brakes. Bonus, I think they even fit behind those OEM wheels.
Get skyco ospho to remove and convert the rust

Thanks for the tip I have to look into that.

You could do the 2020 front brake caliper upgrade
That thing is clean , it’s almost impossible to find one that isn’t rotted
Not that the trucks is very rusty but i sure don't miss wrenching on east coast cars. I
This will cost so much more in Canada : ( ... But have to do all this to my Duramax Extended Long Box. Looks great!

Only gonna get lower huh??? I say slam it and turbo that aluminum 5.3. Also, I love that you share the prices for everything.
I don’t know how much rust the Escalade had but I kinda feel like he got the better deal on this trade. hope he gave you money on top
Exactly
Escalade was definitely worth more but I didn’t care. I just wanted it gone, I’m actually looking forward to building the truck.
I had the service 4x4 in my 03 z71 burb. Dorman 4wd switch 901-072 fixed it. I have some videos of my GMT800 burb, GMT400 k1500 and squarebody on my channel.

I’m right there with you with headliner. 🤦🏻
Did you figure out the 4x4 service light. I have the same issue
Hasn’t come back since I filmed this.
Truck is already looking amazing my guy! What shocks did you put on?
Just 15 buck Gabriel’s from Rockauto. They’ll be getting replaced when I lower it so I didn’t want anything expensive.
Change those headlights again for clear/chrome ones
Great video thanks
Pro tuning HL-DS-ALT-YD-CS03V2-LED-RS is what I have on mine
Do the lux amp upgrade!!! Doing it on my 04 tahoe and it would be sick to have you do a video on it
Would be interesting to know if Rust Remover Gel is sold in the US? I have used some to clean up rust spots in my cars though they aren't as bad as the rust there
What evap code did you have? I have an 05 Silverado with a P0449 code and I’ve replaced both the vent and purge valve and it’s still on.
I forget it was the one for small leak detected. It could be the top of the fuel pump, they tend to rot out.
@ This code reads Evap control circuit low.
Please be sure and take that bed liner out. It will cause premature rust spots.
I wouldn't even attempt to remove any of the bolts on those northern cars without hitting it with the torch first lol

God, watching this makes me want another 800, Badly. I got rid of mine a year ago and bought a T1XX truck and while its nice, its certainly not a 800.
Need to find a rust free southern bed. Would fix all your issues

You selling the lift keys/blocks?
Holding onto them for now
It be nice if boost auto parts gives you a discount code for the wireless charger. Been wanting one, but don't want to pay as much as they are asking for.
Where did you get your head liner material? Did you change color?
Ebay, I changed it from beige to gray
Yesssssssssss
What happened to your Chevy Tahoe z71?
Still have it
Radar renegades are actually a really good tire and good tire company. Read up on them. Completely carbon neutral company and they donate a lot. Those renegade are a little loud but good tires .
Oh cool I never heard of them, I figured they were just cheap tires.
Should’ve got a crew cab
