There is no point in discussing Okinawan bunkai with Sport karate players. They are two different activities which should´ve had different names. I saw Taira sensei seipai bunkai in a TV documentary and it is superb. This clip confirms my first impression. Too bad I can not learn from him.
Agreed.....There is really no point in discussing Karate (Okinawan) bunkai with Sport karate players. Theses are two different activities which should have had different names.
@seagoju ccthedragon is doing what has become an illness and serious flaw.Looking at everything thru the narrow prism of sport.Distance control moving in and out is bullshit in terms of real violence especially against someone like MASAJI who sticks to you like white on rice. Some of the best fundamentals of self defense were expressed in that performance .How it works why it works and what you see is not always what it means.
RayChiHealing your never to old to perform kata look at his gekisi dai ichi Kata vid his movements are much faster and powerful than any of these youngins doing kata
@ccthedragon What I dont understand is what do you mean by poor performance and technical. If you mean proper distancing according to WKF rules, then you have to understand that that doesnt apply. Real Okinawan karate has a range that is MUCH closer than standardized bunkai. Therefore, there is little extention on kicks and punches, but the power difference can be felt. Also, posture is important but for function, and may be altered in order to create a more devastating effect.
Seems like the bunkai to the goju version is pretty much universal. Would be nice to see a closer, more vigourous application of it on video even if its by a lower dan grader.
Where does he train? I doubt I'll be able to but if the opportunity ever comes up I'd like to train with or watch him train in person. I want to see with my eyes why so many people in the comment section are giving him such praise.
@warriorfire8103 Good evening, when i went to Okinawa, I had to opportunity to meet other teachers on the island.Even in Okinawa...the principles of toudi and uchinadi have been distorted. Many people do not know, that there are still family systems on the island that contain the original principles brought from Fuzhou and the inherited "ti" .Karate has a tradition now, and such labels what we conceptualize as "karate". Sensei Taira's waza, is subtle to the eye, and is true and powerful!
@niseikenpo thanks, couldnt have put it better myself. the most important principle within traditional goju is to get in close and cut down the biggest advantage that a taller and bigger attacker would have, and that's reach and power.

@ccthedragon Taira sensei is renound as a bunkai expert, he is quick and powerful, his power generation is amazing. Lacking prettiness does not take anything away from the function with a guy like this. 2 of my instructors went to his seminar when he came to NZ earlier this year, both were very very impressed.
@thujagods: true, they are different names, but they are modern names. The historical, real name of classical karate is not karate, but "toudi" (from "to te", or Chinese hand), and karate from Naha was "nafadi" (Kanji in wikipedia). I think the name "karate jutsu" was created recently by Westerners.
Tremendous bunkai exhibition! I'm always amazed at, what I believe to be, kohai comments. I hope they (kohai) will train long enough to gain appreciation for what is shared in kata by these great teachers.
Who says these techniques are true or Japanese? We have to accept everything Second, all the techniques are unrealistic and incorrect In my great knowledge, nothing is true and nothing of reality. All that is in it. This style is based on strength and it tries to force it on techniques.

On what basis? The kata is, iin my view, more or less totally correct in biomechanical terms - and I am not a student of Taira sensei's.

showing a vigourous bunkai is very difficult cause most the moves are strikes to vulnerable areas, its not easy to hold back.
@niseikenpo thanks, couldnt have put it better myself. the most important principle within traditional goju is to get in close and cut down the biggest advantage that a taller and bigger attacker would have, and that's reach and power.
theres nothing universal about goju ryu, jundokan goju ryu in its purest and original form is by far the best.

He did well. As expected
Some shaky double stepping but strong overall
Solid, very nice!
@ccthedragon
Why do you say it was technically poor? What do you see that could be better?
Taira Sensei,...he clearly is a Goju legend .....he sets the bar for which people should seek to attain his level of skill...
A simple intercept and counter-attack is made into a complicated series of moves...Instead of ending it 3 moves, it's now 6 moves or 8..
@ccthedragon forget scrapy think practical, how many fights have you seen that are neat and tidy, there all scrappy!
Tremendous bunkai exhibition! I'm always amazed at, what I believe to be, kohai comments. I hope they (kohai) will train long enough to gain appreciation for what is shared in kata by these great teachers.
That's probably the most koshi I've seen in a Goju kata. Kewl!
Very nice sir.
Master Moran
Thanks for adding these. Gambatte
