PS3 BC is actually very difficult due to them using the cell processor back in the day. Just bc it exists on PC, which still doesn’t work nearly as well as other consoles, doesn’t mean it’s easily making it work on console (hence why PS3 is only streaming on PS Plus). Agree with PS1/PS2 tho
I think thats more of an excuse that works in sonys favour and theyve just been rolling with that excuse for years! They would rather make money by forcing us to buy games we already own. Ps3 came out in 2006,tecnology has come a long way,if sony wanted to they could but they wont,there is no financial incentive. It would be great if we could all access our ps3 library through ps5....but i really dont think that would happen. I've been hearing rumors lately too about Sony possibly adding backwards compatibility support for PS3 games to the PS5 next and that would be so awesome if that ever does happen, especially considering that PS3 games are pretty much only playable just on the PS3 since PS3 games are not backwards compatible on both PS4 and PS5. If the PS5 ever becomes backwards compatible though next with PS3 games, I also hope it'll possibly include support for PS3 game discs too to where I'll be able to play my physical PS3 games, or the actual PS3 game discs rather, on the PS5 next which would be so cool. If the PS5 also ever becomes backwards compatible with PS3 games next, I'm actually still going to hold onto my old PS3 that I still have and use, which is a PS3 Slim model which I also use as my main PS3, being that the PS5 may not be able to play all PS3 games, especially if it can't play PS3 game discs for some reason. Also, the PS3 that I have is even backwards compatible with PS1 game discs as well which is also something that the PS5 can't really do either even though some PS1 games have been released digitally on the PlayStation Store to play on the PS5 already. I have another PS3 system that I'm also using on my TV which is one of the original launch models which is even backwards compatible with PS2 game discs even though I don't use that PS3 as my main PS3 system.
Get Christian Whitehead on this. Sega goes to him for their mobile/console ports of Sonic and new games. His retro engine is 100% on point. Maybe he can break the cell algorithm of coding too.
It's not the coding itself, it's the hardware itself. However it is possible to emulate is just Sony didn't think about it as PS4 came out at a time where all games were being made for both the PS3 & PS4. Not all games got ported or remastered, but Sony messed up for not giving us backwards compatibility.
Personally I think it was a mistake/mistep to not do backwards compatibility with each subsequent generation. I know why it wasn't a thing due to licensing, Cell Processor, etc., but it would have been a great architectural design if Sony had thought ahead for the future. Game preservation should have never been a hindsight issue. It's good to see Developers backing the community to help push these manufacturing giants (I.E. MS, Sony, Nintendo. etc.) to get on board with these concepts. MS helped pave the way and to keep this conversation going to the point where Sony and Nintendo are now finally coming around in implementing this long-time highly demanded feature moving forward. Hopefully each new console iteration will have backwards compatibility at the forefront of their architectural design. It would be really awesome if this was just beginning and Sony announces a more broad backwards compatibility catalog over time, spanning all the way back to the original Playstation. Having our complete catalog of PS, PS2, PS3, PS4 games playable on PS5 would be one of the greatest gifts Sony has ever bestowed onto their player base. The reverence a move like that would have for the future of their brand would be immeasurable! Here's hoping that these rumors are fully flushed out and not some half-baked attempt at trying to appease their base.

honestly most of the emulators i play on my phone feel identical to playing on the actual console. i've been playing a lot of dreamcast, gamecube, and ps2 games on my new phone, and they look and feel exactly as i remember.

This very week I have build a setup with EIGHT DIFFERENT CONSOLES hooked up to my TV. The PS3 is one of them. It was a lot of effort, I have spent a lot of money, but that’s ok, because it was a passion project, and I am very happy with my setup. But I am single, I live alone, and I can afford that. “Just hook up older systems” is NOT a viable option for the vast majority of people. And still, I CANT play my PS3 as I would’ve like, because all my DualShock 3s are faulty, and I have no way to replace them with original, brand new controllers. We need backwards compatibility for preservation sake.😊

It's not just a matter of getting those games from Activision. There's also Marvel licensing as well. Activision no longer has the license and can't distribute those games. Sony can't just publish those games because Activision owns the code. It's a legal mess and that's why you never see collections of licensed games.

Ps1, ps2, psp and ps3 had a lot of classic games that could of been imported onto ps4/ps5 and their's games trapped on those consoles and not many people want to keep that many consoles in their homes i thought that with 20th anniversary of ratchet and clank we'd get all but we only stream them like the 1st three ratchet and clank game's ratchet gladiator and tools of destruction series so that pretty much for it and their's a lot of classic games that I'm going to name anymore because so many games to play with on playstation.
I had to sell my ps3 back in the day with the 90+ games I owned to get by when I lost my job. I'd love to replay FF13 / -2 / Lightning returns because despite them being hated I loved them 😂 But I'm pretty sure I'd get a lot of use out of backwards compatibility for sure
I have to agree with you as far as hooking up old consoles. Some don't mind but for me, I would rather just have one console. Lets be clear, if they just do what they did with PS1,2 and vista, that would really suck to me (downloads). If I can't use my old disk, I'm going to be pissed. Also, the FF13 games are way better than people give credit for. the first FF13 is in my top 20 greatest JRPGs.
I still have my ps3 and my pS2. I’ll play my ps3 still, mostly old skylands with my son. But my pS2 died a few months back, trying to figure out how to fix it. I know my ps3 will one day do the same and my games, all physical will be paper weights.

I still have my PS3. I originally bought it for my girls back in the day but they hardly played it. Once I retired I turned it on and started playing it. Picked up PS3 games from GameStop for $5 or less as they were getting rid of PS3 games. I upgraded the hard drive to an SSD drive and it still works well today. I skipped the PS4 and went straight to the PS5. My plan is to skip the PS5 Pro and wait for the PS6.
Hopefully this rumor is true because I got a bunch of PS3 games in my library I have not been able to play in years I would love to be able to download them or buy them again on my PS5 games like infamous one and two and three metal gear solid God of war HD collection 1 and 2 and a lot more I know you can stream some of these games but that just ain't good
For all those that say, just dig out your old PS3 to play the games....I don't want to play those games at 720p 30fps! We've got a friggin PS5 that can play those games at least at 1080p/60fps! They did it for the Nathan Drake Collection for the damn PS4!
You can't just put a PS3 game in the ps5 and magically increase the FPS or graphics resolution lol. It don't work like that. You will literally be playing with 720p texture asset's stretched to the resolution you are using. Trust me it looks like dog 💩 compared to playing them on their native system
personally i'd rather play the original on most games than play remasters. they almost always find a way to make remasters worse for me on ffx they changed the shape of the faces so they look far worse than the ps2 original. on ffxii they nerfed the difficulty so hard that it went from being one of the most challenging ff games, to being so pathetically easy it's not at all fun anymore for someone like me who enjoys a challenge. on the ps5 version of spiderman they again changed peter's face and made it much worse than the original ps5 version. they almost always find a way to ruin remasters for me. kingdom hearts 1 and 2, the god of war collections on ps3, and the metal gear solid collection are examples of some of the rare good remasters that don't make stupid, unnecessary changes for the worse.
To pay for a game already OWNED, just to play it on next gen, but not use your already there physical copy. I think people who would pay for a digital copy instead of just popping in the physical, that's Self entitled.

PlayStation 1, 2, 3 emulation exists on PC by a few developers. Sony could have had all of that on PS4 and 5 but they never wanted it due to them selling a streaming service instead.
Can't really say I agree with PS4 being able to emulate PS3 games. PS1 + PS2, yes. PS4's CPU is just far too weak to emulate PS3 games. PS5, however, should be more than capable.
@zzollyy If they included the Cell processor on the motherboard, sure. PS3's GPU is super easy to emulate. We know what happened with the launch PS3. Including hardware for backwards compatibility drives up the cost of the console and then the sales of the console suffers greatly. Same thing would've happened with PS4.
So defensive. I doubt most people still physically have a PS3 in their "closet". If Sony raises the price for PS3 emulation on the PS5, and subscribers are ok with it, I hope they keep raising that PS Plus price. As for me, I will simply plug in my PS3, just as the PS2. While there are lost PS3 gems, there are still many ported games on the PS4 now.

Maybe i'm in the minority, but I've been playing since the original NES, and unless these ps1-3 games are upgraded, I have no interest in playing them again. A lot were clunky, looked horrible, probably 30fps?, etc. No thanks. They were cool at the time. If they are upgraded like the Demon Souls remake, then yes sign me up.

For instance I bought wild arms on the ps3 and when they released it on ps5 it was free for me and allowed me to download it 😎👌 so if they release the same games it would allow you to do the same. I've got my SNES, N64, Game cube, Wii, PS one classic, PS2, PS3, and Switch hooked up to one tv. My PS4 is hooked up to a monitor. Also got my Sega Genesis classic hooked to a separate tv and my SNES classic hooked to a projector. lol

My e-mail account hasn't been hacked or anything, but a while back I noticed that my e-mail account/address has started receiving various spam e-mails and this has been an ongoing problem for me since this has been happening almost every day for the past several months. What exactly causes this to happen? 2. I might have also accidentally responded to a spam e-mail or two from before even though I didn't mean to do so, and it seems like ever since then, my e-mail account has just been receiving even more spam mail that way. What exactly causes that to happen too and why? 3. If you open and/or interact with spam e-mails in any way, how exactly do the scammers themselves know if you responded to their e-mails like that? 4. Is there also some possible way to completely stop the spam mail altogether or not? I've been reporting the e-mails, deleting them, blocking them, and even blocking the e-mail addresses and domains where the e-mails have been coming from, but it seems like no matter what I've been trying to do, nothing seems to be stopping it so far and I sometimes even receive some spam e-mails somehow from certain senders even though I already have their e-mail addresses blocked although they shouldn't be going through to me if I already have them blocked. I just thought of asking these questions though in case if anyone knows the answers to them and I know this is kind of off-topic and all, but this is just something that I've been having to deal with now for quite some time and it's just really aggravating too although I wish it would somehow stop. Actually I think that its a bit of a joke that they are making such a fuss over doing this. They must have some litteral geniuses working at Sony. PS3 Backwards compatibility will NOT be tied to Premium or Extra or Plus in general. Pretty sure that Sony is going to make PS3 backwards compatibility EXCLUSIVE to the PS5-Pro and beyond. You will know it will be BS, and I know it will be BS, hell EVEN Sony will know it's BS, but they NEED to get those PS5-Pro sales kicking somehow. I could see PS3-BC be a PS5-Pro exclusive feature for a 6-months-1year, and Sony will have a press-release stating that they will bring it to standard PS5s with an update.
I agree I do think it will be ps5 pro exclusive for the first 6months-1year. Theirs still so many people on ps4 & if they’re gonna drag people to ps5 why not get them to buy the ps5 pro and this would be the perfect way to do that.
But they also have to bring the main games from ps3. This includes gta 4, mw2, bo2, cod4, mw3 etc.. without these big games I don’t think people will really care as much for the ps3 backwards compatibility
I have my most important games physically, I went digital in 2015 so i could have easy access to all my games. I have a ton of digital games for my ps3 though, just haven't cared to play them.
They could do full backwards compatibility. But PS1 and PS2 games are playable almost on anything (PC, PSP, Vita, Android Phones…etc). It would cost them a lot. PS3 is the only one that makes sense to work on, given that PS3 emulation is still hard even on PC.
I agree remaster all the games or make them available for download digitally because I don’t have a ps3 or the games but i would buy them digital or pay for premium subscription It’s a lost opportunity not to let ps5 play the entire library of ps games
I have my PS3 still but I can't play my old disc games. The Blu-ray drive wore out. You can't get digital versions of games like Killzone 2 and 3 and Metal Gear Solid 4.

Ps1, ps2, psp and ps3 had a lot of classic games that could of been imported onto ps4/ps5 and their's games trapped on those consoles and not many people want to keep that many consoles in their homes i thought that with 20th anniversary of ratchet and clank we'd get all but we only stream them like the 1st three ratchet and clank game's ratchet gladiator and tools of destruction series so that pretty much for it and their's a lot of classic games that I'm going to name anymore because so many games to play with on playstation.
I had to sell my ps3 back in the day with the 90+ games I owned to get by when I lost my job.
I'd love to replay FF13 / -2 / Lightning returns because despite them being hated I loved them 😂
But I'm pretty sure I'd get a lot of use out of backwards compatibility for sure

I have to agree with you as far as hooking up old consoles. Some don't mind but for me, I would rather just have one console. Lets be clear, if they just do what they did with PS1,2 and vista, that would really suck to me (downloads). If I can't use my old disk, I'm going to be pissed. Also, the FF13 games are way better than people give credit for. the first FF13 is in my top 20 greatest JRPGs.
I still have my ps3 and my pS2. I’ll play my ps3 still, mostly old skylands with my son. But my pS2 died a few months back, trying to figure out how to fix it. I know my ps3 will one day do the same and my games, all physical will be paper weights.

Sony should just port the Xbox version like they did with red dead and call it a day. The Xbox version is already playing at a higher frame frate and look wonderful so no need to fully remaster it.

I still have my PS3. I originally bought it for my girls back in the day but they hardly played it. Once I retired I turned it on and started playing it. Picked up PS3 games from GameStop for $5 or less as they were getting rid of PS3 games. I upgraded the hard drive to an SSD drive and it still works well today. I skipped the PS4 and went straight to the PS5. My plan is to skip the PS5 Pro and wait for the PS6.

For all those that say, just dig out your old PS3 to play the games....I don't want to play those games at 720p 30fps! We've got a friggin PS5 that can play those games at least at 1080p/60fps! They did it for the Nathan Drake Collection for the damn PS4!
You can't just put a PS3 game in the ps5 and magically increase the FPS or graphics resolution lol. It don't work like that.
You will literally be playing with 720p texture asset's stretched to the resolution you are using. Trust me it looks like dog 💩 compared to playing them on their native system

personally i'd rather play the original on most games than play remasters. they almost always find a way to make remasters worse for me
on ffx they changed the shape of the faces so they look far worse than the ps2 original. on ffxii they nerfed the difficulty so hard that it went from being one of the most challenging ff games, to being so pathetically easy it's not at all fun anymore for someone like me who enjoys a challenge.
on the ps5 version of spiderman they again changed peter's face and made it much worse than the original ps5 version. they almost always find a way to ruin remasters for me.
kingdom hearts 1 and 2, the god of war collections on ps3, and the metal gear solid collection are examples of some of the rare good remasters that don't make stupid, unnecessary changes for the worse.
To pay for a game already OWNED, just to play it on next gen, but not use your already there physical copy.

PlayStation 1, 2, 3 emulation exists on PC by a few developers. Sony could have had all of that on PS4 and 5 but they never wanted it due to them selling a streaming service instead.
Can't really say I agree with PS4 being able to emulate PS3 games. PS1 + PS2, yes. PS4's CPU is just far too weak to emulate PS3 games.
PS5, however, should be more than capable.

@zzollyy If they included the Cell processor on the motherboard, sure. PS3's GPU is super easy to emulate. We know what happened with the launch PS3. Including hardware for backwards compatibility drives up the cost of the console and then the sales of the console suffers greatly. Same thing would've happened with PS4.
So defensive. I doubt most people still physically have a PS3 in their "closet". If Sony raises the price for PS3 emulation on the PS5, and subscribers are ok with it, I hope they keep raising that PS Plus price. As for me, I will simply plug in my PS3, just as the PS2. While there are lost PS3 gems, there are still many ported games on the PS4 now.
Sony could do a ps3 emulator with a smaller company to get make more jobs created and ps3 games if Sony decides to. Sly 1 You can buy now for $10 and it runs good. Better then crappy $70 games.

I have all 10 of my consoles hooked up and ready to play at a moment's notice including my ps3 but i would still absolutely love to have ps3 on my ps5. I would even be happy to buy the majority of my ps3 games again just for that luxury. Thanks for keeping us informed GameCross. Much appreciated
Maybe i'm in the minority, but I've been playing since the original NES, and unless these ps1-3 games are upgraded, I have no interest in playing them again. A lot were clunky, looked horrible, probably 30fps?, etc. No thanks. They were cool at the time. If they are upgraded like the Demon Souls remake, then yes sign me up.

I was hoping this at launch but noooo! Smh, the games are still there though and some things cross over. For instance I bought wild arms on the ps3 and when they released it on ps5 it was free for me and allowed me to download it 😎👌 so if they release the same games it would allow you to do the same. I wish they would put silent hill on premium so I could get it on ps5.

I still have pretty much every PS3 game I've ever bought and a PS3. If ever comes a point that I can play them on my PS5, I'm gonna go with that. However, I don't see them ever making Folklore available on the system.
I've got my SNES, N64, Game cube, Wii, PS one classic, PS2, PS3, and Switch hooked up to one tv. My PS4 is hooked up to a monitor. Also got my Sega Genesis classic hooked to a separate tv and my SNES classic hooked to a projector. lol

My boys (4 & 5yrs) like to play Minecraft on the PS3 and last night I played Dredge on the Switch for about 45 minutes.

I have some questions here to ask in case if anyone would happen to possibly know the answers to them even though this might seem off-topic and all, but I was just wondering anyway:
1. My e-mail account hasn't been hacked or anything, but a while back I noticed that my e-mail account/address has started receiving various spam e-mails and this has been an ongoing problem for me since this has been happening almost every day for the past several months. What exactly causes this to happen?
2. I might have also accidentally responded to a spam e-mail or two from before even though I didn't mean to do so, and it seems like ever since then, my e-mail account has just been receiving even more spam mail that way. What exactly causes that to happen too and why?
3. If you open and/or interact with spam e-mails in any way, how exactly do the scammers themselves know if you responded to their e-mails like that?
4. Is there also some possible way to completely stop the spam mail altogether or not? I've been reporting the e-mails, deleting them, blocking them, and even blocking the e-mail addresses and domains where the e-mails have been coming from, but it seems like no matter what I've been trying to do, nothing seems to be stopping it so far and I sometimes even receive some spam e-mails somehow from certain senders even though I already have their e-mail addresses blocked although they shouldn't be going through to me if I already have them blocked.
I just thought of asking these questions though in case if anyone knows the answers to them and I know this is kind of off-topic and all, but this is just something that I've been having to deal with now for quite some time and it's just really aggravating too although I wish it would somehow stop. I just want to know why and how this sort of thing happens, and also if there's a way to possibly stop it somehow.
Actually I think that its a bit of a joke that they are making such a fuss over doing this. They must have some litteral geniuses working at Sony. They should be able to get this off the ground and up and running with relative ease. The modding community dig into this stuff and shred problems day in and day out so with the talent they should have at a mega coorporation like Sony it should be a breeze for them. PS3 Backwards compatibility will NOT be tied to Premium or Extra or Plus in general. Pretty sure that Sony is going to make PS3 backwards compatibility EXCLUSIVE to the PS5-Pro and beyond. You will know it will be BS, and I know it will be BS, hell EVEN Sony will know it's BS, but they NEED to get those PS5-Pro sales kicking somehow. I could see PS3-BC be a PS5-Pro exclusive feature for a 6-months-1year, and Sony will have a press-release stating that they will bring it to standard PS5s with an update.
I agree I do think it will be ps5 pro exclusive for the first 6months-1year. Theirs still so many people on ps4 & if they’re gonna drag people to ps5 why not get them to buy the ps5 pro and this would be the perfect way to do that.
But they also have to bring the main games from ps3. This includes gta 4, mw2, bo2, cod4, mw3 etc.. without these big games I don’t think people will really care as much for the ps3 backwards compatibility
I have my most important games physically, I went digital in 2015 so i could have easy access to all my games. I have a ton of digital games for my ps3 though, just haven't cared to play them.
They could do full backwards compatibility. But PS1 and PS2 games are playable almost on anything (PC, PSP, Vita, Android Phones…etc). It would cost them a lot. PS3 is the only one that makes sense to work on, given that PS3 emulation is still hard even on PC.
I agree remaster all the games or make them available for download digitally because I don’t have a ps3 or the games but i would buy them digital or pay for premium subscription
