  • James Griffin performs with Terry Sylvester and John Ford Coley as Soft Rock Cafe in Canada on November 02, 2001. The song was made popular by The Carpenters, which many people know. What many might not know was that this was the theme song for the movie Lovers and Other Strangers, and that James won an Academy Award for writing this song with Robb Royer and Fred Karlin.

      Jimmy was the most gentle soul. It hurts to hear this guy on piano belittle And make light of Jimmy.
      Jimmy had a mountain of talent that was always used by many as their own. He never put up a fuss about not being recognized for the super star he was

    I totally missed that this classic Oscar winning song was written by one of the most underrated singer/song writers of all time from legendary band Bread! Mr. Griffins great voice, staggering humility, shy, and charming manner only adds to his stellar character, very moving, RIP.

    When my husband was on his last, dying from melanoma at age 25, this song came over the radio. I caught him crying. We had only been married 4 years and had 3 children. We still had so much more living. There just wasn't enough time left.

    I didn't realize that James was this accomplished...unfortunately David Gates received all the attention during the Bread years. R.I.P. James. Wish I would have known sooner that you were this talented.

      I don’t think it’s “unfortunate” that David Gates received “all the attention”. Gates was an extraordinarily, almost generational talent, both his voice and his guitar playing. Jimmy was also very gifted. Nothing unfortunate here at all.

    • @ipsurvivor
      @ipsurvivor 5 лет назад +2

      Maureen Spratt - It’s cool you got to meet him. It wasn’t written specifically for The Carpenters but for a film called ‘Lovers And Other Strangers’ which is most likely how Richard Carpenter heard it. The Academy Award was for Best Original Song but The Carpenters were not allowed to sing it since they weren’t in the film. Petula Clark sang it at Karen’s request.
      Fred Garlin wrote the music and Robb Royer and Jimmy Griffin (both from Bread) wrote the lyrics.

      Rusty Mr. Gates had a great voice, but to say he had a superior voice to Mr, Griffin is plainly subjective. Mr. Griffin had a great voice, with different and interesting qualities, ‘superior’ doesn’t come into it.

      I am reading their biography "Bread: A Sweet Surrender" and because the first major hit was a David Gates lead, their label started pushing similar songs. If Jimmy had been the one with the first hit, they would have pushed him out front instead. Also, Jimmy was more into the rock and progressive songs. But since their fans started associating them with Gates' ballads, it was harder to sell those types of songs; even though they were good at them, too.
