- I am back! So sorry for the long hiatus, I’ve been struggling with tendinitis for the past few months and haven’t been able to do my hair! I’ve missed doing it so much and I finally been able to start styling again. So here we are, a new era to explore, the Edwardian age.
Two ways to do an easy Gibson girl style from the early 1900s. I start by prepping my hair at night, to give it some more body vibrating it with lotta body and letting it dry. Having my hair have this grit and body from the braids helps the style. You could also do this on fresh hair, but it helps to have it dirtied up a bit so that it will create the puff that is necessary for this time period.
In this video, I also show you how to use hair stuffing. Ever been in antique store and wonder why there’s so many cute little containers with a hole in the center? These are hair catchers, and back in The Victorian age into the turn of the century, women would collect their hair from their brushes. One of the reasons they did this was to collect hair so that their loved ones could make jewelry after they had passed. I know this sounds kind of gross but if you ever come across it, it is gorgeous and delicate. But, women collected their hair so that they could ceate these massive fluffy hairstyles that so defined this period. It allows you to match your hair stuffing to your own natural hair, and also not waste what you brush out. I also use hair stuffing in my 1940 styles as well, it helps give you extra body if your hair doesn’t want to tease.
You will need:
Lotta body to set your braids
Pomade or hairspray, depending on what style of hold your hair likes
A paddle brush
A rat tail comb
Teasing comb
Wave clips
Bobby pins or straight pins
Vintage/Repro plastic or metal straight pins
Hair combs

I don't think people always realize how prevalent "rats", hairpieces, and stuffing was back then. It didn't stop with the powdered wigs! Thank you for this video! I hope your wrist improves quickly.
Aw thank you! I do find it interesting that people buy hair stuffing, you can make your own and it will actually match, red is so hard to match! It has been used for centuries and is still used. Hair switches and extensions are not just a modern invention. Thanks for watching! Still struggling with the wrist, but hoping for some new treatments.
Try a small braid underneath that goes towards the back roll and use it as an anchor for the top to pin to, I have thin hair and my hair won't pin without an anchor either a small ponytail or braid.
