As a Milan fan since 1980, i thank for the great video of a true legend, Franco Baresi. I remember fondly, at minute 6, the english player Ray Colin Wilkins, called "razor" for the throws that cut the field in two, arrived at Milan in the summer of 1984, for two years, who died prematurely in 2018. A player who soon became a favorite of us fans, a true gentleman even off the field.

Baresi is an absolute legend, and like you addressed he was undersized for a centre back. Just goes to show his knowledge of the game. Another similar Italian is Fabio Cannavaro who was also only 5'9 and considered undersized for a centre back. But his performance at the 2006 WC was nothing short of legendary. I'm from Ireland so I didn't really mind who won that WC but it was hard to pick a side with Cannavaro and Zidane being two of my favourite players. He was definitely one of the very best. Players like him should be awarded the player of the year not only strikers. Is a shame. I’m a German not an Italian but I have admired him all the time.
He was actually voted by the Italian press and supporters as the greatest Italian player of the 20th century. That's a hell of an achievement for a defender and shows just how great he was.
The name BARESI is a mythical one to the new-age of football fans. As for me, I wished I could have witnessed his defending ability and being a Milan fan, it makes it all the more sweeter knowing that his IMMORTALITY in footballing folklore will NEVER BE RIVALLED.
@@creative_soul-recolo I could name you many but here's the problem; Anyone I name, you're just going to laugh off because you put Baresi on this pedestal. Baresi was a fantastic player in his time, one of the best ever. I just think you went way over board saying he could "never be rivalled". Like, wtf does that even mean? Trophies? Caps? Longevity? All have been bettered since.
@@JaymzZeppelin It's not even about that. We are talking about a player who reinvented the sweeper role and rewrote the position of a defender. I mean to be voted the player of the century at a club where there has been countless legends. Who's been with the club through thick and thin. I mean yes there are players who rival his status or even better both past and present but there's been none like him during a time where Italian football was the benchmark.
@@creative_soul-recolo Okay listen. You clearly worship Baresi and I'm not hating on that, like I said he was a great player. He didn't "reinvent or rewrite" anything though. You are very poetic/romantic with your description of him; but I'm presuming (again, not hating) your first language isn't English, because taken literally, you're not really making any sense.
You smashed this, and what I love is that you have made clear how Barasi career and all the era's of Milan (being the best club teams of all times) being all part of one. The greatest of all times!!! And what a interesting start regarding him and his brother and how they lost both parents early.
Most probably Paolo Maldini is the best defender in the history football so far: highly talented technically, physically and tactically. And I ought to agree. But man, Franco Baresi - who was highly talented as well - was made of iron, totally committed and the most intelligent defender I have ever seen. The final at World Cup in '94 after the knee injury was one of the best performances ever delivered by a defender. I have loved him and he has a special place for me because he was a captain in an old fashioned way: no bullshit, let speak the football field.
I have been saying this for years about franco Baresi and people say what am i talking about. In the 80s i used to watch Italian football and franco was so good on the ball no one could get the ball of him and he was so clever he new where to put the next pass. I am so privileged to have watched him as he was world class. 👍
Radiohed as soundtrack is freakin fantastic, the videos you make are amazing, i am not a soccer fan but i love them you are an anthropologist of football. Thank you so much!
When it comes to USA 94 I still cry with Franco but not because we lost, not because he misses the penalty, but because I'm proud of my captain (rossonero as well) shining class and humanity.
He was the guy strikers did not want to mark them. He was a Maestro, his vision of the game unmatched. He was part of one of the best defences that ever played the game and for a moment in time, one of the best teams that ever played the game. The guy just demanded Respect. Out and out Legend 🙌. 58 game win run 👏👏👏
Man I remember singing the Franco baresi song walking home from school in junior high with my best friend And this was in Johnson county , Kansas in the 80s. That’s how legendary baresi was, American kids in Kansas knew who he was
Great job on this video. Although I’m an Inter fan I have no problem saying that Baresi is THE best defender I’ve ever seen play the game. A true legend ✊️
That moment was heartbreaking - Italy - Brazil shootout and Baresi shooting over - got to know it through this video. Goes on to show how great humans undergo the most flattening of ordeals. Very nice video, overall.
I remember when football Italia started on channel 4 in 92 as a kid. Serie A truly was the pinnacle then and pre internet it was one game usually featuring Gazza at lazio, and James Richardson highlights show with his gelato in some piazza. Would have loved to see him play more in the few years before.
Yes,it was a must for me..This was the top League in the World..I used to have so many debates with work colleagues constantly bumming up the PL..But they were wrong, that was just about SKy Tv and DOSH!. The Italians had the Dosh,Glamour, players and the quality &,that's just an fact!
Ah, Gazzetta Football Italia. The best football show to ever grace the screens. Knowledge, insights, great interviews and highlights with a large dose of wit. What a fantastic programme and a great presenter. At the time, the best league in the world.
From an Englishman Italy have and will always produce the best defenders! They love the art of football and all aspects of the game which includes defending
Not so lately, unfortunately. Did you know that Serie A has the highest scoring rate per match among the top 5 leagues in 20/21 season, and the 2nd highest in 19/20 and 21/22? Except overrated Bonucci, they got no CB superstars anymore. Just look at those recent calls in national squad: Bonucci (CB, 35) Tolói (CB, 32 years old, Brazilian born) Acerbi (CB, 35) Romagnoli (CB, 28) Scalvini (CB, 19) Bastoni (CB, 23) Mancini (CB, 26) Luiz Felipe (CB, 26, Brazilian born) Gatti (CB, 24) Not so promising, bro. Plus these "Italians": Emerson (LB, 28, Brazilian born) Jorginho (MF, 31, Brazilian born) Grifo (RW, 30, German born, never played in Serie A) Retegui (CF, 23, Argentine born, never played in Serie A) João Pedro (AMF/CF, 31, Brazilian born) Not so promising, bro.
He isn’t underrated if you have a half decent understanding of football or at least if your older than the messi/ronaldo fanboy generation Edit: just checked you’re channel after seeing that profile pic and it peeking my interest, wow your a hell of a artist with portraits
Just so you know, "[surname] 2nd, 3rd, etc", was a common way to call brothers, not a way to diminish anyone. They did even record them like that on old annuals.
Thanks for this. Really enjoyed the memories. Baresi was one of those players that seemed to be around forever. Maldini too. I suppose they actually were.
No one can match Franco. He had it all. Vision, predicting things before it happend, he could drive with the ball forward at his feet, he rarely kicked the ball away when under pressure like 99.99% of todays defenders, every pass hade a tought behind it, he could pass it, dribble, tackle, trick his opponents, stress free. Im a Milan fan since childhood. Maldini is in the top. One of my favourites, but Baresi is watching them all from above, he was that good. 🤘🏻👹🤙🏻
My Favourite Defender of all time and i probably saw him play less than 25 times as i'm british and so could only watch him at international tournaments and when he played against a UK team or a british club. The epitome of Brains, Bravery and a phenomenal mental capacity that combined Will to Win & Game Intelligence in equal measure. Literally the player i judge every central defender against. I wanted Gary Neville to play CB for Man Utd because he was a clever, sneaky, dirty defender before he was 21 and i thought those qualities were quite rare both in the United team and the british game in general. The True Captain Leader Legend.
Great to see this video. Maldini is the one that always receives the plaudits and Baresi gets forgotten, but Baresi was the best defender I've ever seen.

Best football ⚽️ Documentary I've seen in a long time ⌛ Brilliant information and a very Unbiased opinion 👍 Baresi wow the Wall what a player 👏...Superb 👏 Got 2 b up there as the greatest centre half ever. With Maldini, Beckenbauer ⚽️
After Napoli smashed Milan 3 nil... Reporter asked Maradona about his performance... Maradona Said something like the game is over and I have got Baresis shirt which I will treasure forever.... That's the respect baresi had
As a young Dutch guy I got interested in AC Milan when Gullit, Rijkaard and Van Basten went there from ‘87 onwards. But I soon discovered that the real leader of the team was Franco Baresi. Always defending forward in a dynamic style, great appearance. He was the Boss of one of the greatest club teams ever to step on a pitch.
Baresi was a defending legend. AC Milan in the 80s, they virtually had the Italian International defense on their side. Baresi, Maldini, Costacurta. One of the best teams I have ever seen. Lets not forget other great defenders like Cabrini, Passarella, Kaiser and a defender who is not well know because his national team was weak at the time. I am talking of Elias Figueroa (Chile), he was awarded best player in Sth America 3 times, Brazil wanted him to play for their national team. He was also awarded best defender in 1974 WC where Beckenbauer also played, captained and won WC. He was outstanding. There are no such defenders anymore, they cannot read the game, cannot dribble under extreme pressure and have no timing in tackles. Ie Ramos, sent off 28 times and a liability.
Thank you for this. I am from England and watched Bobby Moore play. Franco Baresi is the only player I would rate alongside Bobby. Baresi was my favourite player.
Well-researched with some great photos and video footage. That was a very interesting documentary about one of the greatest defenders the game has ever seen.
Sacchi's milan changed football more than any team in history. without sacchi there'd been no guardiola, and that Ac milan team remains the best club side of all time
Guardiola learned from cruyff , so there’d still be pep without sacci. Also, the greatest club side is Barca of 2008-12. They conceded few goals, were dominant in possession and - unlike Milan - never struggled to score goals. unlike most people commenting, i was around to watch this Milan side of ‘87-94. Sacci was a visionary and a legend. But let’s not exaggerate.
@@SKa-tt9nm ah, the same cruyff who was humiliated by sacchi's understudy, capello? ok, I rest my case, I will be here if you want to learn more about football
@@SKa-tt9nm AC Milan of 90's was team complet : defense, midfield and forward. Barcelona was only on attack. Wasn't big money involved in that time and it was very hard to get all the trophies in 1 year. The recovery of the injury wasn't that quick and you couldn't afford a big squad. I have to say, seria A was very competitive, with a lot of good quality teams. Never, Spain or England had a league like Italia 80's-90's.
Narration was top notch, Baresi was a Class act, this level of quality at milan is unmatched in football history, i mean the italian league at that time itself is unmatched in quality even today across europe.
Dont think we will see a legend defender like him again wish he would have played for Liverpool he is the best ive seen in my lifetime he HAD everything.

wonderful video. thanks for this. I agree, Baresi simply the best at center although Beckenbauer is right there too. But it's scary to think how good Scirea was as well. Baresi couldn't get play time on national team until Scirea retired. I was at the 94 final, what a beast to control that star studded Brazil line up. So sad he missed the penalty because he deserved better for his legacy.
The late 80’s through till the early 00’s was footballs golden age. This was the period of legends, who played with fire and passion for the game. How much would Baresi/Maldini/Baggio/Weah/Gullit et al be worth in todays game? This golden period of football and all the legends it gave birth to will never happen again. Messi/Ronaldo are the last of them.

The name BARESI is a mythical one to the new-age of football fans. As for me, I wished I could have witnessed his defending ability and being a Milan fan, it makes it all the more sweeter knowing that his IMMORTALITY in footballing folklore will NEVER BE RIVALLED.
It's already been rivalled plenty and will be again in the future don't be so silly.
@@JaymzZeppelin Name me one player in todays era that can be matched with BARESI?
Controlled by those that despise out humanty
Yea Ireland beat yeas in first match
Tale a look at Paul mc grath , he was way better than any Italian defender. Fu
Thanks for the nostalgic trip down memory lane. Baresi was pure class.
Thank you for this amazing tribute to my favourite footballer of all time.
Watching his farewell still moves me 25 years after.
What a well put together mini doc. Thank you for all the time and effort you put into it.
Man I remember singing the Franco baresi song walking home from school in junior high with my best friend
And this was in Johnson county , Kansas in the 80s. That’s how legendary baresi was, American kids in Kansas knew who he was
just want to say i love your content. great script, great music
This bio is a treasure
Legends. C4 brought Italian football to UK television and Baresi was such a legend to watch.
Watching football italia in the 80s milans franco baresi made being a defender exciting to me ! What a player
Baresi was one of the best defenders I have ever seen. His timing and reading of the game as superb
Great video mate.
What a legend Baresi!!!
To be so imposing a figure in a time when Serie A had several monster forwards.
This is an amazing mini doc befiting such a legend as
Don Franco
Another brilliant video!!! keep up the great work! what a player Baresi was
From an Englishman Italy have and will always produce the best defenders!
Just look at those recent calls in national squad:
Bonucci (CB, 35)
Tolói (CB, 32 years old, Brazilian born)
Acerbi (CB, 35)
Romagnoli (CB, 28)
Scalvini (CB, 19)
Bastoni (CB, 23)
Mancini (CB, 26)
Luiz Felipe (CB, 26, Brazilian born)
Gatti (CB, 24)
Not so promising, bro.
Plus these "Italians":
Emerson (LB, 28, Brazilian born)
Jorginho (MF, 31, Brazilian born)
Grifo (RW, 30, German born, never played in Serie A)
Retegui (CF, 23, Argentine born, never played in Serie A)
João Pedro (AMF/CF, 31, Brazilian born)
Not so promising, bro.
Great work mate. Should look into the career of Michal Laudrup, one of the most skilled and underrated players in history. Keep it up
He isn’t underrated if you have a half decent understanding of football or at least if your older than the messi/ronaldo fanboy generation
Edit: just checked you’re channel after seeing that profile pic and it peeking my interest, wow your a hell of a artist with portraits
I accidantly found your channel, and what a discovery. Your content is pure gold. Keep up the great work.
Just so you know, "[surname] 2nd, 3rd, etc", was a common way to call brothers, not a way to diminish anyone. They did even record them like that on old annuals.
Thank you from South Africa. King Franco Baresi.
Possibly the best overall defender ever despite not being over six foot.
Thanks for this. Really enjoyed the memories. Baresi was one of those players that seemed to be around forever. Maldini too. I suppose they actually were.
Baresi was simply brilliant what a ac milan side that was
this channel is a gem within the oyster that is youtube.
Baresi is simply the Greatest !
🤘🏻👹🤙🏻
I know I'm 8 months late. But what a video so captivating. It felt like thriller keep up the good work man
My Favourite Defender of all time and i probably saw him play less than 25 times as i'm british and so could only watch him at international tournaments and when he played against a UK team or a british club.
Thank you, sir, for this fantastic video. Such a wonderful tribute to Francos career ! You are very talented ,and also your calm yet ssoothing voice is giving it a nice touch. I crawe for more :) ! GOOD JOB, my friend! Such a shame I can only subsribe once to your channel. Thanks again, man, and cheers from Prague.
Great documentary of a legendary defender 👏👍
In my humble opinion Franco Baresi was the best defender I have ever seen. He made defending an art form.
Grazie " TheRetroRoute " ... this really touched my soul. .
Love the video, but 9:09 is CRAZY 😂 that’s one of the most audacious offside call I’ve ever seen hahahaha
Today I've found a gem page. Keep it up bro!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this. I am from England and watched Bobby Moore play. Franco Baresi is the only player I would rate alongside Bobby. Baresi was my favourite player.
lol. Maldini, Nesta and Baresi where all better than Bobby Moore
@@morkujinirukandji4820 that's an opinion and we will never know. They played in different eras and in different places.
Baresi was a Monster ❤
Well-researched with some great photos and video footage. That was a very interesting documentary about one of the greatest defenders the game has ever seen.
Incredible video! Keep up the great work your content is amazing
The music is always beautiful. Radiohead, Chili Peppers, Max Richter ...class mate.
So Sacchi is the guy to blame for the bland keep-away-merchant stule?
@@famousmortimer7933 thats guardiola
These videos are epic, keep up the good work bro!!!!
Narration was top notch, Baresi was a Class act, this level of quality at milan is unmatched in football history, i mean the italian league at that time itself is unmatched in quality even today across europe.
Splendido documentario, a parte qualche pronuncia qua e là fatto assolutamente in modo professionale, un piacere da vedere e da ascoltare
🏆👀🐐🤟🏼✌🏼🇮🇹
Maradona said it and I'll say it too, the best defender ever. Respect to the Italian master from a Man City fan ❤⚽️🔥
Franco Kaiser Baresi Thank God I had the Grace to see him on the field. Security in the the AC Milan defence. Milan per Sempre
Dont think we will see a legend defender like him again wish he would have played for Liverpool he is the best ive seen in my lifetime he HAD everything.
USA 94. Brazil 🇧🇷 v Italy 🇮🇹 Respect for Baresi's showing vs Romario, Bebeto & Co. Easily one of the greatest defenders/sweepers of all times!
Happy to subscribe ❤️
Awesome content and the details ❤️
Best defender I ever watched.
been watching football for over 50 years and this fella was not far away from bobby moore who was the best defender in the world in his day but franco was a rock glad i was around to watch him at work *☆
totall agree, he read the game so well, a small center half but the best ever.
Baresi and Maldini weren’t just brilliant players but their charisma was awesome.
Excellent chronistory...u did make one foible...baggio was not past his prime at 28...keep these coming !!
He was still a genius, but not at his peak.
wonderful video. thanks for this.
This is a bloody great video well done mate 👍
Franco Baresi 1960
AC Milan 1977-1997
Italia 1982-1994
Total respect to this man from Scotland UK 🇬🇧 😊
Great documentary, Great story.
Thanks a lot for sharing.

The first ever football game I saw live on TV.
I started with gold.
That was a really enjoyable video. Cheers
