I am an Italian living my whole life in Germany, I was 16 watching this with all my german friends. In the 118 Minute they said they wanted to go smoke a cigarette before the penalties and I went with them. I forgot my pack of smokes at my seat near theTV and went back when the goal happened. I screamed so loud out of my lungs and they all ran back into the room devastated and they couldnt believe it. This was one of the best days of my life and I will never forget it.
Its funny because when it comes to midfield and 06, the biggest name was Zidane and next was Ronaldhino and Beckham. Pirlo however was truly one of the best and his longevity is unprecedented

Grosso‘s goal, as scored after Pirlo‘s pass, is a historic piece of art, a painting. Which I have no problems admitting as a German, having watched it live on TV back then.
The level of intensity, passion and excitement was unbelievable in this match. All awake well into midnight in India, Buffon's saves were giving us heart attacks and finally Grosso's goal erupted a volcano.
Watching this on well past midnight i remember in Pakistan and crying my heart out after seeing Germany crashing out. Just goes to show how football is such a global sport. There really is nothing like it.
I am a diehard Germany fan. This game here sums up my childhood.I still remember where i was while watching this game. back then i was 12 years old and i was blinded by my love for Germany. watching this 16 years later made me realize how special that game was and how much i loved that team. But now all i can think of is how complete and how well-assembled this Italian team is. A real joy to watch them play. This team played football the right way. Italy was extremely unlucky with Argentina on penalties, and the facto, in the field won every single match (besides the aforementioned 1-1 that led to penalties). Italy v Germany matches are always special. 1970- 2006 nothing has changed when these two teams come against each other. Cannavaro, Buffon, Grosso, Pirlo ,Del Piero what a team. That Italy team deserved to be the champions 🏆😍 and they just did this in the most pleasant way.

I’m gonna go as far as to say this is the most perfect match I’ve ever watched in my whole life. Rewatching now is still as exciting as seeing it live back then. The whole match plays out like a movie. From start to finish it’s an absolute behemoth of a match and I would put it up as one of the greatest sporting moments of all time.

I still remember watching this match when i was 15 years old, happy tears since i'm a tifosi of Italy since WC 1998. Watching almost all The Avengers from Golden Era of Serie A win their World Cup Trophy. Buffon, Cannavaro, Nesta, Materazzi, Zambrotta, Gattuso, Pirlo, Totti, Inzaghi, Del Piero. If only Maldini and Baggio can join this Golden Team
I remember my father screaming "Score this goal, Pirlo!" as in "Don't risk a pass or whatever!" Pirlo instead passed to Grosso and the rest is history 😃 When Del Piero scored it happened so fast that I actually didn't exult. I literally stared at the TV, stunned. Then I looked at my father and I just smiled. My father rose up from his armchair and said: "Well, I'll now go to sleep."
As a Germany fan I remembered this as a 50-50 game that ended in heartbreak right before penalties. The reality was that Italy was far better for most of the game. They had a better team overall and the clearer chances throughout. This was the beginning of the national team resurgence for Germany but in hindsight this team wasn't quite there yet. As much as it pains me to admit, Italy were clear deserved winners.
Finally someone with brain! Danke my friend! Italy and Germany are rivals and we have (with Brazil) the best tradition. Football has made of generations and up and down.

the combination of Buffon as a GK with defenders like Grosso, Cannavaro, Materazzi, Chiellini, and Nesta made this team a fortress. starting from the group stage all the way to the final, the only goals they got scored on were one own goal (Zaccardo against the US) and the penalties. that's really impressive.
Del Piero shows the unmitigated determination of a box to box player, getting back from mid-pitch goal side into his own penalty area to defend, then immediately turning to sprint 80-plus meters in the 121st minute to receive the no-look pass from Gilardino to place it magnificently in the back of the sack. One of my all-time favorite world Cup moments.

The level of intensity, passion and excitement was unbelievable in this match. All awake well into midnight in India, Buffon's saves were giving us heart attacks and finally Grosso's goal erupted a volcano.
Le 8 year old me was busy watching Dhoni hitting sixes against WI in tests at 2am, After 4 years in 2010 i realised what have i missed.
Watching this on well past midnight i remember in Pakistan and crying my heart out after seeing Germany crashing out. Just goes to show how football is such a global sport. There really is nothing like it.

I am a diehard Germany fan. This game here sums up my childhood.I still remember where i was while watching this game. back then i was 12 years old and i was blinded by my love for Germany. watching this 16 years later made me realize how special that game was and how much i loved that team. But now all i can think of is how complete and how well-assembled this Italian team is. A real joy to watch them play. This team played football the right way. Props to totti for being that efficient on the grandest stage. Man of the match for me

Fully agree. The team in 1990 was absolutely superior to any other team. Italy was extremely unlucky with Argentina on penalties, and the facto, in the field won every single match (besides the aforementioned 1-1 that led to penalties). Baggio, Maldini, Baresi and others deserved at least one World Cup. It's insane to think these football icons did not lift one.

What an electric atmosphere at Dortmund. Absolutely a thriller match. I have never seen such an atmosphere and a thriller match like this 🔥. Italy v Germany matches are always special. 1970- 2006 nothing has changed when these two teams come against each other. Cannavaro, Buffon, Grosso, Pirlo ,Del Piero what a team. That Italy team deserved to be the champions 🏆😍 and they just did this in the most pleasant way.

I’m gonna go as far as to say this is the most perfect match I’ve ever watched in my whole life. Rewatching now is still as exciting as seeing it live back then. The whole match plays out like a movie. From start to finish it’s an absolute behemoth of a match and I would put it up as one of the greatest sporting moments of all time.

When Del Piero scored it happened so fast that I actually didn't exult. I literally stared at the TV, stunned. Then I looked at my father and I just smiled. My father rose up from his armchair and said: "Well, I'll now go to sleep."

As a Germany fan I remembered this as a 50-50 game that ended in heartbreak right before penalties. The reality was that Italy was far better for most of the game. They had a better team overall and the clearer chances throughout. This was the beginning of the national team resurgence for Germany but in hindsight this team wasn't quite there yet. As much as it pains me to admit, Italy were clear deserved winners.

the combination of Buffon as a GK with defenders like Grosso, Cannavaro, Materazzi, Chiellini, and Nesta made this team a fortress. starting from the group stage all the way to the final, the only goals they got scored on were one own goal (Zaccardo against the US) and the penalties. that's really impressive.
