I was devastated watching this 5 years ago, I had been watching you for many years before this and loved feeling almost apart for its growth. back then you were just a disembodied voice, and as such my investment was purely in the layout and not the person making it. 5 years later. I've just watched the station take shape, on layout Mk 3 (I think) the first few shots of the station in that video blew me away with how good it looked, and reminded me how much enjoyment you bring to us all. Thanks for sharing your hobby for all these years.

I'll miss the Old Everard Junction. I've enjoyed the video's throughout the years. Everard Junction has given me some great ideas for my layout as I build it. I look forward to new Everard Junction Layout Journey.....thanks Richard for a great layout and video's. I hope Hornby does another update when you have complete the new Everard Junction layout... regards...John

Today on Oct’23 I look on your first videos and I find this one that surprise me about how you take this hard decision, and looking today was the right one. I really love you videos. cheers from 🇨🇦

Exciting times Richard, sad to see this one go, it's one of the best around RUclips, but I agree it's the right time, and you've learnt a lot about the long term issues of some materials. Really looking forward to seeing the new layout appear from the ground up, and now you've cleaned out some of the junk there's lots more space. Keep up the great work mate, whether it's the layout, tutorials, or the cars, you're a joy to watch and always very informative towards people of all knowledge and skill levels.

This came just as I began to build the baseboards for my brand new layout. Your videos were the first I watched back when I was working on my old layout with my granddad who is no longer with us. The layout will be named after him "Raymond junction" My new layout will be bigger better and like yours, work. Hopefully we can both build the layout we want in the next few years. Thanks for all your videos and here's to the new layouts

Like many others have said - sad to see the old layout go and thanks for all the tips and advice over the years.
I too have had similar experiences with my first layout being built on a recycled base board and housed in an un-insulated garage (too cold in winter and too hot in summer).
Now I have converted the garage (fully insulated and heated) and have proper sturdy base boards.
For me de-railing is a thing of the past, so think you’re on the right track to insulate and start again!
All the best for the new layout - and now looking forward to seeing your new ideas and layout.

I like how you narrate your videos, seem a nice guy, bloody good at what you do, always want to learn, better your skills and I like your passion behind your hobby. Yours are the only channel I have notifications set up for... and I don't even have a train layout 🤣It is definitely more about the builds for me. Anyway, hope you are doing well, bud. Lee, Derby.

Good luck with it all fella. I discovered Everard Junction a few years back when, frankly, I was going through the mill and in a funny kind of way it became a sanctuary/retreat and saw me through, especially as it reminded me of my 80s childhood and trips to "town" (London) with Dad and Network South East. Thank you for being such an inspiration. Everard Junction is dead. Long live Everard Junction.

You made the correct decision. I have worked on a couple of different layouts, and when you have an issue with the wood, it is time to start over.
A large layout I worked with had expansion issues in the Texas heat. The portions we built in winter grew to the point during the summer that we would walk into the layout barn and find derailed locomotives spilled on the floor.

  • @vincentnasuta1321

I was so excited to check out the video to see what was coming next to the layout. After I picked myself off the floor it started to make sense as to why you were doing it. The plans you have for the loft will make it nice to work and play. I remember on many of your postings I have heard you say it’s too hot or cold to be up there. I will tell you I couldn’t watch the whole video I wanted to keep the memory of the trains running instead of you tearing it apart. I am looking forward to the new layout until then I can always watch the old videos. I have learned a lot from you. Thank you.

Sad that the materials let you down but lessons to be learned by a lot from the experience, Been there myself, however the words of my grandfather came back to me that all the is old is not wrong, float your base boards, air dried never kiln dried, never screw it down as if your building the forth road bridge, always drill oversized holes or use undersized screws, back them off half a turn and on and on he used to hammer the lessons in like nails all taken from his decades as a master pattern maker. In the end it comes down to expansion, if it cannot then your asking for trouble further down the line and I am pleased to say it works.
Looking forwards to seeing the new layout as it develops.

I know how hard of a decision it is to start all over. I had my layout in the basement, I was on vacation, heavy rains, sump pump failed, 6-8 inches if water when i got home. The vertical supports soaked up the water to the plywood. The vertical supports warped after drying and the plywood warped and separated. Upon rebuilding, I painted all the wood with latex paint to seal the wood and help keep moisture out. Plus look into electrical and lighting improvement that they have made also. Rebuilding can also mean improving on stuff not available years ago. Good luck and I look forward to the next video.

    Always loved you work!
I just dismantled my layout and like you, I kept all my trees, rails, points, houses and so on. I actually enjoyed taking it apart as I uncovered some mistakes I did in the past. My layout was built on pine for the structure, plywood for the base, and a 1.5-inch thick foam board on top of it which allowed me to nail my cork easily at the beginning before I glued it on the board and fixed the rails with nails. I just had to buy thicker and longer spring wire for the tortoise. I lived in Florida at the time and my layout was in a garage with 90% humidity and temperature going up to 105F in the summer.
I kept my layout only for a year and a half before I moved to California so it did not have time to warp I guess. I saw that some people use only the foam board directly on pine and glue little plywood plates where they have tortoises. I might try that next time as drilling through plywood is a real pain.

Hi Richard, that must have a very hard decision to make, having achieved so much along the way to what , was for me at least, the most enjoyable making of any model railway I've ever followed, the tips on how to and show it being done has been absolutely fantastic and by the way, to actually be doing all this and to make your wonderful videos at the same time to show us all what stages you are at, fantastic, I stumbled upon your videos on RUclips purely by accident a long time ago and have watched and watched ( some many times over ) a big thank you from me and I'm sure from everyone who follow you on RUclips, good luck with whatever method you choose to use for new baseboards, I for one will be watching your progress as and when you post your updates, all the best to you and those familiar hands, Geoff

  • @GrahamFoulston
    @GrahamFoulston 7 лет назад

Well Richard, I was only wondering the other day what had been happening on the layout - now I know!! I knew you had been busy on the Granada so thought it was just that. I have to admit that after seeing the video and the amount of warping that had occurred then I don't blame you for taking the action you have - anything else would have been just an ongoing saga of patching it up all the time. There comes a time when you have to say enough is enough which is obviously what you have done. Good man. It takes a lot of courage to do what you have just done but I bet that now it's all dismantled you can now breath a sigh of relief and get into that exciting stage of starting fresh. That layout doesn't owe you anything, it has given you 8 years of pleasure and taught you a lot along the way so a new Everard Junction (if you keep the same name that is) will be born and will be bigger and better than this version which we have all enjoyed watching it grow. I shall look forward to seeing the new layout develop which I missed the first time round. Good luck buddy. ...........Graham

  • @TheDuke-vb9cq

If there is a chance of damp in your loft, I'd recommend stretching to Marine plywood, and making both the frames and tops from this material. It has worked well for me down the years, even though my baseboards get lugged around to exhibitions all around Europe ! Another contributory factor of derailments, are sharp curves and clip together track. The number of rail joints not only increases resistance electrically, but contributes to derailments as rails obviously expand and contract. In tight curves a slightly open rail join can catch a wheel flange.
Good luck with your next layout, and your well presented videos......

Great to see a disassembly video for a change. Well done. Climatizing the attic (humidity control in some way as well as temperature swing reductions) would do wonders, even with some MDF, but yeah, plywood or moisture-sealing MDF bits would help. The fun of designing a new layout and building it brings its own joys.

I have never felt the need to comment on a RUclips video before, but I have to say having found your channel when you started your yard (for engines and carriages) as well as the canal and hence watched all of your other videos, your dedication is second to none. I have seen other modellers but their attention to detail was nothing like your own, and then enjoying your film of you working on your Granada explained everything that anyone needs to know. It is wonderful to see a talented person work on projects with dedication when the rest of us are willing to watch. I look forward to watching your future posts. My one suggestion is whatever timber you use for the future layout is to seal it with a varnish\sealant or similar. Keep up the good work.

Like many others have stated, I too enjoyed the layout and I will definitely miss it. It was so sad to see the scenery and track work being dismantled. The layout is dead, long live the layout! I am sure the new layout will be equally inspiring and perhaps to a new generation of modellers. It also gives opportunities to exploit new advances in wiring, point motor and accessory control. Looking forward to seeing the forthcoming videos of the new layout as it begins to form. Good luck and waiting in eager anticipation.

What a shame after all your hard and meticulous work over the years.
It was a truly exceptional layout and must have been a gut wrenching experience having to start to undo it all.
I can totally relate to the problems you were having with the warping and derailments etc...... as I have sort of made the same mistake in my loft too. Although I did actually build baseboard frames for my layout, I only used tilers batten to construct the frames as well as for the legs too and worse still, I only used 6mm MDF for the baseboard tops!!!!! The result was basically the same.
Thankfully in my case, I had only started scenery in one small corner of my layout so I wont have to undo much scenery as I dismantle what Ive done.
I look forward to whatever rises like a phoenix from the ashes of Everard Junction with your new layout and I cant wait for a whole new set of "How To" videos as well as update videos as things progress.
    Best of luck.
    Regards Simon

Totally understand Richard. I did this a few years ago but I'm in the process of moving house so everything had to stop again. I might get the layout finished when I retire!

Looked like some sort of bad science fiction movie with that hand taking all the cars, houses and people away.
Sad to see the old layout go, but also excited for the even bigger and better one.
Thanks for all the hints, tips and ideas you have given me, I have used many on my layout.

Sad to see it being ripped up, but also looking forward to the new layout. I have this week just started a small layout for myself and grandson who is four and train crazy, I intend to use most of the techniques from your previous videos that have inspired me to get started.

End of a era in one way, start of an era at the same time.
As much as it saddening to see this go it's drawn upon a vast amount of ideas and prosperity for the future layout.
Keep up the good work, looking forward to see Everard Junction 1.0.

Absolute nightmare, baseboards are the most important aspect it would seem. Half gutted for you but then again half delighted as the new layout will be years of experience and a wealth of new ideas from a very competent modeller, Keep us all up to date with your marvellous videos, the suspense between vids will be tough going.

Sad but exciting, all in the same breath. I work for a builders merchant and have tips. Coat/seal all 8 faces or plywood before use. If cut, seal it. Roof insulation. look up Aluthermo Quatro insulation. If funds aren't stretching, Staple good kitchen/turkey foil to the rafters then nail your polystyrene up. always tape joints. Looking forward to the next video already.

A true shame to see such an inspirational layout for so many people to be taken apart. I have lurked for sometime as you rekindled my interest in a long lost hobby. As much as I enjoyed watching the locos run the "how to videos" are what really got me thinking, can I do it? Please continue with these on the new layout Richard. Thanks and I'm ready when you are.....

Everard Junction was a fantastic model railway and a huge inspiration. I have a canal scene on my layout which I named "Everard Canal" because it was completely modelled on your canal scene. Sad to see it being torn down but can't wait to see the new layout.

OMG! Having just discovered this a few weeks back and loving going through every episode you made the layout is no more.
I don't have a layout apart from in my head, planned for the future. That stunning scenery I would be so proud of.
Shocked. Must be so hard to destroy years of work. I have noted your list of errors!
But better things await. Best wishes for the new layout and will be watching as fascinated as before.

I have just seen your video, your loft looks exactly the same to mine. I have for many years wanted to build a layout but never got round to do one. I'm going to see some of the your other . I wish you all the best. I don't know much about RUclips so don't have much of a clue of how to make my own programs. I hope to follow your progress.

Wow, mate, brave move but I think it's the right one, and the only choice you had really I guess. I've loved watching your videos ever since stumbling across them last year, and I have learnt a lot from watching, to use on my own layout, the upside is that we get to go on another journey with you now. I think once you insulate the loft you will solve a large degree of the warping potential of any new work too. Good luck going forward, I look forward to your future videos.

I'm sorry to see it go, but understand why you need to do it. If you need to get rid of your long carriage shed, simply send it to me! Your experience does point out some interesting ideas though for those building layouts, primarily reusability. Learned a lot with the video. I know it must be tough but lessons learned make a big difference. Thanks for the journey, and now onto the new one.
