I wrote it down a couple of times already. Your lay-out ( even that's HO) is sick!! It's should been in a public access space !!! Big ups from Amsterdam
You Sir, are a Magician with paints, stains, powders and all around weathering. You are very talented, and your beautiful layout sure proves it. Thanks for the inspiring video!!!
Cheers. Glad you enjoyed watching. I try my best. Good thing about this hobby is that we are always developing and improving our skills. That’s why I enjoy it so much. :-)

Hi, that is very kind of you. Thanks. I’m so glad you enjoy watching the progress of Dean Park. I really enjoy working on it (wish I could get more spare time!) and sharing my progress with everyone who cares to watch. Cheers. Dave
hi dave brilliant update and tour around the layout cant believe ive been watching your layout from your very first video and it is so realistic look forward to your future videos on the layout. hope you and the family are all well. peter
Cheers Peter. Yeah I’ve been busy in the last decade…actually can’t believe it’s been that long since I started lol. I find time where I can to work on my layout. But I’m not a serial uploader, I don’t it when I have something worth showing.
Watched this last night Dave, just before you took it down! It's nice to kick off the year with an overall view to refresh the memory of where everything is in relation to each other. Cheers
Thanks Davie. Yeah the version last night had a cool intro but RUclips said I was in copyright breach for the music. Ah well. It happens. :-) glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching. Dave
Hi Dave, what a great video, it is a wonderful introduction to your fantastic layout and I sincerely hope it will attract more subscribers to your channel. Cheers Greg
Absolutely stunning. I've been watching your videos for years but had never seen a Layout Tour video before. Your attention to detail and design, the different levels, the station, the diesel maintenance yard. Everything about your layout is just bloody amazing. Thanks so much for your videos and major contribution to the world of model railways. You and Richard at Everard Junction are on another level of modeling, incredible skill. Cheers.
Hi John, you’re too kind, thank you. I love what I do and sharing my progress with fellow modellers through my videos. To read feedback like yours and makes me even prouder of what I’ve achieved so far. Lots still to do though. All the best. Dave
By far the best layout on the internet, I’d be keen to see you track plan as a birdseye view as I’d like ideas for my sons layout I’d like to build, also I was born in the 80s so this brings back fond memories
Many many thanks for giving me such high praise. I don’t have an electronic track plan to hand. It was all done old school with templates and strips of paper.
Thanks for the tour Dave and i really appreciate the extensive information on sourcing materials, components used to building your fantastic layout. Only eleven years - WOW! An inspiration to us all. Look forward to seeing it develop even more in 2024.
Does not seem like 11 years. It’s flown by. Lots of models have travelled many miles on those tracks since the beginning. :-) lots still to do. Maybe get it done before it’s 15 years since the start. But I’m in no rush. What else would I do with my time if I didn’t have things to build. :-)
Dave this layout is amazing the hi level of detail is fantastic , The gas Cylinders outside the mobile homes, Stinging nettles on the railway embankments , woooow ,I will shortly be starting my Era 7 20x10 n gauge layout if it turns out half as good as this I will be well happy, Please keep up the great work. Drew
Cheers. Glad you enjoy a proper model railway channel. So many of them are just people sitting talking to you without real modelling. That’s why I enjoy Everard too.
Quite, quite , superb Dave. I have been with you since you were building the station roof and main building, and it has been quite the ride so far! Excellent stuff.
Cheers Kevin. Thanks for joining me for the journey so far. I’ve come a long way, but lots more to do on the future. I’m excited about the future projects.
Fantastic update and tour. Was interesting to see there’s still some of the layout without any scenery and your ideas to fill this space. If it was me, I would be tempted to fill the flat area with a golf course then you can still see the trains in the background but I’m sure it will look great whatever you choose!
Thanks for the Layout tour. Over the years that I have been watching this layout build, it has impressed me how much detail you put into every inch of it and it always amazes me, even more, every time I watch it. good luck with the rest of the build and as you said "a layout is never finished". have just received the last three sets of points I need to finish the first board and then the testing, before I take it all up and glue the track in place and fit the point motors and then the ballasting. Martin. (Thailand)😃
Great to see the layout in its entirety Dave and hear you talk about how everything links together. Your very interesting narrative brings to life the challenges you’ve faced, while your discussion about the different methods and manufacturer’s products you’ve used to overcome those challenges is quite inspiring. It’s certainly given me inspiration as to how I will design and build Phase 3 of Pevenbourne when the time comes to create the upper scenic level. Thanks for sharing your layout in this video. Take care mate.
Thanks. Glad you found it useful. It was good for me to go over it again and to remind myself of the methods I used. It also allowed me to remind myself just how much work I’ve put in over the last 10+ years. cheers. Dave
Great stuff - I think the depot is the best part of your layout with so much fine detail. And it certainly does remind me of Haymarket. It is easy to forget how much all that must cost since it is not just rolling stock that burns holes in your pockets. I had a wry smile at the telephone number of Dean Park Estates. Obviously, an Edinburgh area code with (classes) 27, 37, and 47!
Haha, good spot about the telephone number. I’d even forgotten about that. It was an old dialling code too. lol. Yes, all the details cost money. It all adds up. As does the aerosol primer, paints, thinners etc. costs a lot. But we have to spend our money on something! We are only here once haha.
Epic. Started my first ever (very small and modest) layout recently, been watching your channel for inspiration. If I can manage 1% of what you've done, I'll be very happy.
Luv the building site.I actually do Admin for a firm of Electrical Contractors and visit sites often . You could include old intermodal type containers for storage for the contractors .Your model railway is great inspiration .
Good overall video her Dave, great to see all the various areas of the layout and hear your plans for the sections that are still to be worked on, keep up the great work.
Really enjoyed the layout tour although I have watched from the start, gosh 11 years where does the time go, it was good to see what kits and scenery you used.
Nice to have a layout tour, and it's looking great, there's some superb modelling going on there. It's certainly much bigger than Dylington our little layout. An enjoyable video to watch with a cuppa and a biscuit.....cheers James 🙂👍
Just watched your tour of the layout, just amazing detail ,great work ,i am just at the planning stage ,but this has given me some great inspiration ,the only space available is a small attached single garage about 15ft x 7ft after its insulated,
Unbelievable Model World you have created. I would love to have the knowledge and skills that you clearly possess. I watched right to the end wondering what type of control unit you have. It had to be ECoS for the size of layout. Congrats on achieving such a wonderful model.
Cheers William. I’m pretty proud of what I’ve achieved. A long way to go and I’m always looking to improve parts of the layout as new ideas come along. It’s a great hobby! Cheers. Dave
Your model, your rules. Attention to detail, amazing, i used to work for BR as firstly a guard and much later on as a passenger trains driver. My only gripe is those who do not bother putting either drivers in cabs or passengers on trains. If i could shrink down to appropriate scale, i would happily book on and drive a couple of trains on your layout, so much of what you have depicted is oh so familiar, the joins between actual 3 d model and background scenery are seemless, fantastic job.
Hi you’re very kind, thanks 🙏 I am getting around to fitting drivers as and when. I prefer them to have them in the cabs too. Passengers…that could be more expensive with the number of coaches I have lol :-) cheers. Dave
Thanks for the recap Dave. Think I’ve watched all, if not, most of your videos. You do forget what excellent progress you’ve made over the years and what is still left to do. Really looking forward to seeing the rest of the layout progress. I’d be interested to know how you choose which to tackle next, e.g. why do you start the OHLE vs. The West End of the layout? Happy Modelling
Hi cheers. I like to vary what I do. For example I was working on the incline retaining wall for weeks, then did the start of that scenic landscaping. I planned out the masts to go on to the incline and then decided to go for doing the OHLE just to freshen up and vary what I was doing. Stops you getting stale and bored. After the mammoth task of the lower OHLE I needed a break, so I’m now working on sone kits to go in one corner of the west end. This will appear in my next update in March. Then I’ll go back on to scenic work, etc. keeps me from getting bogged down in one task for too long.
Your attention to detail is excellent. I'm building a GWR based project but as I live in France I'm seriously limited to sourcing materials. I'm used to paying customs duty on things I have to order from UK ! Your efforts are inspiring though. Bravo !
Great video, enjoyed the tour, wonderful layout, I would have liked to have seen a screen shot of a plan/drawing of the full layout just to get an overall appreciation. Regards.🙂
Further to my earlier comment my Cavalex class 56 arrived. I ran it in as recommended, and then coupled it up to 4 container wagons. After a lap and a half of my layout, it stuttered, there was a nasty burning smell and it stopped. Whilst the motor is turning, haulage capacity is negligible, presumably a gear problem. Waiting to return it for a replacement
What a fantastic layout the time and detail you have put in is amazing. Your control switch panel is great, I have spend time on mine and I am now on take 4 or 5 I was wondering where you got the 2 colour lights from ie red/green are they I bulb or 2 together. Keep up the great work you are a inspiration
Hi, thank you so much for your comment. I am so chuffed that you enjoy watching what I do. The dual Led are from Dcc concepts, and are all wired in to the Dcc concepts equipment etc. I did a video on this…. ruclips.net/video/Sn4H-4tyQ4k/видео.htmlsi=hKbN1MCwq91gsqBi Hope you find this useful. Cheers Dave
Hello. I've been following you for a while and your layout is truely magnificent. At 36:25 I thought it might be interesting to make that a more scruffy area. Instead of grassy embankments, have old looing vertical brick work with lots of grime and discarded rails and sleepers. If it is going to be an area where trains rush through and is generally out of sight by the public, then it wouldn't be looked after. When i think of all of those types of areas in london between tunnel portels, they're usually dark and neglected and quite deep as the tunnels are passing under large buildings. Just a thought.
Hi, thanks for that idea. I’ll have a think. I do like rails and sleepers flung by the rail side. I’ve used that on other parts. It does look effective. Glad you enjoyed the tour as well. Your feedback is much appreciated. Cheers. Dave
I don't know why but my favourite part remains the abandoned siding, east of the station. Its such a cleaver part of the layout. most layouts would not waste space with a "dead" area so for you to have it just adds a wonderful extra depth to the layout
Hi thanks. I have to say I do like that bit too. It was on my list of things to put on the layout from the very start… a disused siding was going to feature somewhere! So I’m glad you spotted it and liked it too. Cheers. Dave
Further to earlier comments my 56 burnt out after running in. A pcb burnt out and rails of Sheffield are sending a replacement pcb. Seems it may be a common problem
A fabulous tour of your layout Dave even though I've seen it all before, obviously on video, there's always something new to see. The primo trees are very nice, I saw them at the last Warley. Do you have any idea what's happened to finescale models, I've always used them but can't seem to find them any longer. Thanks for showing us around again cheers Andy
Hi Dave. As you model an era that is a little late for me, I hadn't subscribed, but I kept coming back to your channel, due to both your amazing layout and the quality of your videos. So I've now subscribed, making your channel one of only 2 modern layouts (the other is Everard Junction - no surprise there) to which I subscribe. May I ask you two questions? 1) What are the overall dimensions of the layout? (apologies if you mentioned it in the video and missed it) 2) Since your layout is shared on YT, did you ponder how much OLE to use, as the more you add, the more it potentially inhibits visibility for viewers? Thanks again for raking the time to share your superb work.
Hi, thanks for getting in touch and of course for subscribing. It’s much appreciated. Ok, the sizes are 25ft scenic layout by 11ft wide. There is also a storage yard at one end which adds another 3-4ft to the layout. I’m only putting OHLE on the upper two mainlines and a single lower mainline (which has now received its wires). As o don’t want to make it too difficult to access the tracks and to give a good view of the rest of the layout. I hope this helps. Cheers. Dave
What an amazing layout, fantastic work! Are those reversing cameras you’ve used to display the hidden part of your tracks in the screens next to the command station? If so, what make/model are they and would you recommend? I’ve got a hidden fiddle yard I need to keep an eye on. Thanks!
What a wonderful layout. I have one inane question. How do you keep dust off all that detail without breaking something? I have a small N gauge layout under construction and it is unfortunate that due to size, many of your superb detail items are simply not available.
Being up the loft bit isn’t exposed to daily dust that you get in the house. However I do get some. I use a vacuum attachment on the rails, buildings etc. the bushes are given a good blow now and again with the vacuum nearby…it does keep the worst of it off. Cheers. Dave
Hi Love your layout and reaaly enjoying the videos and advice you give. Can i just ask you what is the best mini camera for the layout or which one do you use. kind regards
Hi, thanks. Oh that’s Simple…..an iPhone! :-) saves buying a larger, expensive hand held camera. It does 4k and I put it on tripods to keep it steady in the tightest of spots.
Thoroughly enjoyed watching your tour, twice! The quality, accuracy and sheer volume of detail on the layout is truly amazing. Those of us who live a very long way from Scotland are privileged to be able to "see and enjoy" your large layout. My fledgling layout is roughly 6m x 6m (19' 6") around the wall type layout with a L shaped walk in well. I am currently building the lower level fiddle yard and nearing a decision point; build my inclines around the layout, emphasising levels as we progress, or use a an elongated helix to climb to the higher level? I am really taken by your "round the layout" approach. I was wondering if you have a layout plan that you are prepared to share? I am looking for inspiration regarding levels and crating the 3d look for the layout. Once again Kudos to you for your skills patience and willingness to share. I imagine making the videos adds another dimension to the effort and planning that you put in. Thanks so much for sharing.
Hi Andrew. Thanks for watching it, twice. And I’m so glad you enjoyed this tour. Keep working away on your own layout! It’s a great hobby. I don’t actually have a layout plan. It was all done the old fashioned way…bits of paper and scribbles! Cheers. Dave
Absolutely fantastic layout with so much detail. Have you considered a freight depot, or would it have to take up too much space to do it justice? Thanks
Hi, thanks. I would have loved a colliery/ loading facility. But to do that justice you’ve need 20ft+, so it would replace one whole side of the layout. Sadly we can’t fit everything in we want. :-( Cheers Dave
Yes I am. It will arrive soon hopefully. I’ll be having it in BR Blue. Although not ones that operated in Scotland in 1990’s, it will look good hauling a load of HAA when I add them to my collection.
Not sure I’d be buying a house on the Dean Park Estate, being built directly on top of a tunnel! 😂 Detailing of the layout is lovely, my only comment is it’s so clean. It needs a LOAD more grime
Foundations of the houses are secure :-) It’s not as clean as people think. The camera and lighting make it a lot brighter and hide a lot of the subtle weathering. I’ve had a few folk visit, Inc Everard junction and he noticed straight away how more ‘grimy’ it looked in person. The new LED lights I installed are a lot brighter. I see a lot of layouts that are over done with grime, and it looks awful. I wasn’t going to slap black soot everywhere and make the same mistakes. I sometimes go back to an area and add in more weathering as and when. But to my eyes, not through the camera I feel I’ve got the weathering to a level I am pretty satisfied with. Cheers.
As all ways your attention to detail is great, I would just wish you looked at the roads by the station where the level crossing is etc, they need some weathering I think as they stand out from everything else and look new if that makes sense. But keep up the hard work.
An amazing achievement, Dave, and a huge source of inspiration and information for me as I finally start the scenic part of my layout. I run the ECoS too and I'd be interested to see more on how you set up the accessories wiring and control to work with it. I'm not planning much signalling on mine but I do want a fair bit of building / ground lighting with which I'd like to do more than just 'all on / all off'. And how do you get the proper loco images on your ECoS? That's been driving me nuts! Cheers Rich
Would love to see a track diagram to see how you actually linked all this together. Any chance of seeing one please? I'm designing my first model railway though I have a lot smaller area to work in.
@@DeanPark how did you link up the upper level track to the lower level? Is it prototype for a high speed line to only have a single track? I'd love to share my intended plan with you if possible and get your thoughts? It's an interesting concept with a 4 track mainline
Hi, no. It’s a standard kit. The large station roof which line is might differ from the other station roof that comes with the station, are those the same sizes?
Absolutely fabulous layout! Have thoroughly enjoyed watching all that. Thank you. Silly question though, the points you have used. Are they peco small, medium or large? Just to give me an idea. You’ve helped me loads with my own layout with your previous videos without you even knowing it. 😂 Your videos are very helpful and enjoyable to watch. Regards Tom
I very much enjoyed this tour… I do hope you don’t get the urge to / need to, move house anytime soon as your layout is a work of art! Your backscenes - I don’t recognise/haven’t seen some of them before. What brand/manufacturer are they? Thanks in advance 👍🏻🚂
Your layout is absolutely amazing, and you are really giving me an urge to model BR 80s/90s even though I model the LNER from around 1933- the Early BR era. This might come across as a bad question, but my reasoning is I’m from North America, and over here we don’t really have electric locomotives. Is it safe to run diesel/other non-overhead wire locomotives on lines with overhead wires in real life? It’s just something I’ve always wondered and never found a definitive answer to. I know some late BR/Preserved Steam locos have high voltage warning signs on them, but I’m assuming that’s jus5 a case of better safe than sorry?
Thank you so much for your comment. Yeah preserved steam locos are allowed to run under the wires. As you say, they have overhead flash warnings on them in order for them to be certified to run on the mainline.
Some steam locos had a yellow diagonal line across the cab to signify that they weren't allowed under there wires, I believe that in preservation a few locos had cab roofs and chimneys cut down by a couple of inches in order to run under the wires on the mainline today, i believe that a couple of kings and duchess have been modified, but you'd have to research reach individual loco for a definitive a answer on each. Hope that adds constructively to Dave's answer, I'm sure that someone out there can answer much better than me.
Amazing talent
Thank you. That is really kind of you to say so. Cheers. Dave

Cheers. Dave
Thanks I tried to watch this last night and it was blocked. Good start for the new year.
Thanks for taking the time to stop by again to watch it. Cheers. Glad you enjoyed it.
Dave
fantastic video dave great to see round the whole layout
Glad you enjoyed it.
Bravo !
Cheers. I do love adding the little details. It brings it to life I think. :-)
Great video, enjoyed the tour, wonderful layout, I would have liked to have seen a screen shot of a plan/drawing of the full layout just to get an overall appreciation. Regards.🙂
Didn’t do drawings or use a computer. I did it all by eye, using sketches and templates.
Hmm. I’ve seen someone else have gear issues. Hope you get it sorted/replaced. My class 56 review will be uploaded soon! Just testing them now. Dave
wonderful
Thank you! Cheers!

Great layout. It would be interesting to see a track plan diagram to get a full understanding how everything links together Dave.
I don’t have one. I didn’t design on a computer, it was done with paper, templates etc…proper old school :-)
Now THAT is amazing!
‘I’ve got a life outside this loft’ 😂 great comment 👍🏻
Haha. Yeah! Some people seem to think model trains is all I do. I’m not that sad 😝
Oh dear. Not good. I’m testing my 56’s just now. Will have a review up this week. Cheers. Dave
great job - i love watching your videos.
kind regards from the united states of america :)
Hi thanks. Dave
Your Layout should be found in the BRM Magazine!
It’s featured in a few issues of Hornby Magazine. Maybe I’ll put it forward to other titles in the future :-)
Excellent vid Christ only been at it for 2 years and built a bigger shed lol going to be a long time but perservence will pay off hopefully
There’s no rush :-)!
Hi. Thanks. I thought they were still trading. 🤔
(apologies if you mentioned it in the video and missed it)
2) Since your layout is shared on YT, did you ponder how much OLE to use, as the more you add, the more it potentially inhibits visibility for viewers?
Thanks again for raking the time to share your superb work.
Hi, thanks for getting in touch and of course for subscribing. It’s much appreciated.
Ok, the sizes are 25ft scenic layout by 11ft wide.
There is also a storage yard at one end which adds another 3-4ft to the layout.
I’m only putting OHLE on the upper two mainlines and a single lower mainline (which has now received its wires). As o don’t want to make it too difficult to access the tracks and to give a good view of the rest of the layout.
I hope this helps. Cheers. Dave
@@DeanPark Thanks for replying. I'm working my way thro' your back catalogue
Cheers. Dave
Thank you for taking the time to answer such a trivial question.@@DeanPark
Cheers
Dave
Are you thinking of adding a class 56 to your fleet? Used to see a few around Millerhill in the 1990s
Detailing of the layout is lovely, my only comment is it’s so clean. It needs a LOAD more grime
Foundations of the houses are secure :-)
It’s not as clean as people think.
It is difficult to add weathering with all of the kerbs etc in place. Just think about it as a newly laid road surface. :-)
Cheers
Rich
Hi. Check out my video 255 for the ecos/accessories.

Thanks@@DeanPark
Would love to see a track diagram to see how you actually linked all this together. Any chance of seeing one please? I'm designing my first model railway though I have a lot smaller area to work in.
Hi i didn’t have one, other than a sketch on paper.
@@DeanPark how did you link up the upper level track to the lower level? Is it prototype for a high speed line to only have a single track?
I'd love to share my intended plan with you if possible and get your thoughts? It's an interesting concept with a 4 track mainline
Hi I've managed to make the station canopy but did you extend the legs from standard cheers rob #evermore junction
Regards Tom
Hi. Medium with a few large mainly. But small in the depot and storage yard.
Hi Dave. Fantastic layout. Do you use occupational sensors on your layout. If so are they from dcc concepts. Thanks
No. Just infrared sensors.
What sound chip do you have in your class 91?
Hi, it’s from road & rails. Twin speaker.
Hi, no intention of moving. Haha
These are ID backscenes.
Great overview video Dave - particularly love Depot area! Source of tall yard lights and horizontal diesel tanks? Cheers
Tanks….knightwing kit. Tall lights are express models, but they no longer make them! Chap who did do them, sadly passed away.
Great video sir! I never knew about that very oil stained "Short Siding" for Locomotives at Dean Park Station. When is that used?
It’s used for stabling a loco or dmu. Always wanted a ln overgrown siding too. So I made it like that at the end. :-)

@@DeanPark Okay I understand.... Nice place to "hold" a Class 40!
Do you have any steam locomotives such as gwr dean single
Hi, I only have a3 and a4 locos. As they are east coast machines. Which is my area of interest.
Where are your background scenes from ?
they are ID backscenes
Thanks, they look very good.
Was this originally uploaded last night?
Yeah, had technical issues with them start!
@@DeanPark oh I see, and the same goes for any diesel locomotive I presume?
Some steam locos had a yellow diagonal line across the cab to signify that they weren't allowed under there wires, I believe that in preservation a few locos had cab roofs and chimneys cut down by a couple of inches in order to run under the wires on the mainline today, i believe that a couple of kings and duchess have been modified, but you'd have to research reach individual loco for a definitive a answer on each.
Hope that adds constructively to Dave's answer, I'm sure that someone out there can answer much better than me.
@@philipstokes2824 thanks for the info! That’s really neat, I didn’t know some locomotives needed rebuilding to be mainline certified!
Very nice to relive the build. What are the maroon coaches right after the opening credits?
Those are bachmann mk1 Br Maroon ones that I use to run with my preserved A4’s, A3’s etc
Saw part of this last night n then was gone off the channel
Technical issues. Sorry about that.
@@DeanPark no probs.get to watch it in work tonight instead.
