  • The concept of creating a ride based on "Back to the Future" first emerged during a 1986 conversation between Steven Spielberg and Peter N. Alexander of MCA Planning and Development, held at Universal Studios Hollywood right before the introduction of the King Kong Encounter for the park's Studio Tour. Spielberg shared an experience where George Lucas had taken him on the Star Tours ride at Disneyland, with Lucas playfully boasting that Universal couldn't match it. Motivated by this, Spielberg encouraged Alexander to explore the potential of "Back to the Future." At this point, the Universal Studios Florida project was stalled and seemed unlikely to proceed, but Spielberg's input played a crucial role in reviving it.
Work on the ride started in 1988. Originally envisioned as a roller coaster, the team soon realized the limitations of this format for storytelling and shifted towards creating a simulator ride. This new concept involved guests boarding vehicles designed like the DeLorean from the movies and experiencing a film on a massive, dome-shaped IMAX screen. To refine the ride experience, the design team conducted tests with DeLorean foam models at an OMNIMAX theatre in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Intamin was later hired to design the ride's motion system.
The ride was officially announced in February 1989 as part of the attractions for the upcoming Universal Studios Florida theme park, slated to open in mid-1990, and was later slated to come to Universal Studios Hollywood in 1991. Construction delays pushed back the opening of the attractions. The Universal Studios Florida version was inaugurated on May 2, 1991, with a $40 million investment. Structural issues postponed the Universal Studios Hollywood ride until June 12, 1993, with its cost reaching $60 million.
A third version of the ride opened on March 31, 2001, at Universal Studios Japan in Osaka. In 2015, the "Back to the Future" gift shop at Universal Studios Japan was converted into Minion Mart, a store themed after "Despicable Me 2."

Glad that you found the ride footage for Back To The Future. I really still wished that you had the entire pre-show and the main show of Sesame Street 4D.

Absolutely love that this isn't some re-hashed version of the Blu-ray edit. Also, never knew of all of the subtle changes to the Japan version!

@@cowmissing In the Japan version, the dinosaur noises were more realistic and the Pepsi sign at 0:37 was digitally edited to be a LED Toyota sign.

@@Bradly105 You are correct, a new film print was made as Toyota was a sponsor of the ride.

Nice. Director Douglas Trumbull and one of his many legendary works of art. It's sad that Universal so poorly re-produced and chopped the footage onto DVD and BluRay. You'd think with the popularity of the ride, then and now, that they would put some financial effort into a proper release.

Sadly, no. But anything is possible. Keep thinking positive.
