- The latest Fable trailer has received more praise, and noticeably looks better than the previous. But it once again seems hesitant to show Fable gameplay and opted for quick snapshots that feel more simulated. I will be sitting down with Kirk from @whatsnewvideogames to discuss why I am concerned about the Fable game.
Fable is a series of action role-playing video games for Xbox, Microsoft Windows, macOS, Xbox 360 and Xbox One platforms. The series was developed by Lionhead Studios until the studio was closed in 2016, and is published by Xbox Game Studios. The latest game is essentially Fable 4 even if they aren't calling it that.

Kirk must be younger. Because I've been burned by games promising much and showing little for decades. When you get older you learn to pay more attention to patterns and track records.
Reforge, we're gonna see a gameplay deep dive in a January Direct next year and then it will release probably Fall 2025.

I think part of the reason why they're showing Fable like this is because Fable was never a cinematic heavy franchise. And now they are amping that up with the reboot.
I will say the trailer is about 95% in game cutscenes and 5% gameplay with no HUD. With 1% being in game pre done footage.
Overall it looks good. I don't need to see her swinging her sword at an enemy to make any negative judgements about game development.
The gameplay When she's walking in the market, running on the trail, and doing some in-combat finishing move without tge HUD.
Kirk fell into the fallacy of an “two things can’t be true” argument. You can be concerned for a certain outcome based on patterns or evidence without expressing a prediction that it will actually come true. That concern does not equate a definitive prediction. Lono is justified in his concern but has made no definitive declarations.
I agree but I think it's a pointless contribution to a discussion. Like if I went to a townhall and said, I am concerned about an upcoming project, and they say how would u like us to change or address it and I reply, no I didn't say you need to change anything just that I feel concerned. It really doesn't add anything of substance.
I think there is a different between your own confidence in something and actionable feedback.
Like in this case, I get Lono is concerned because the pattern in the past for games taking long to develop and not showing gameplay isn't great, but he also isn't providing fundamental actionable changes that they can do reasonably. If the gameplay isn't ready yet because a game is more than a year out and that doesn't necessarily equate to a poor quality game (sometimes it has, sometimes it hasn't in the past) eventually, what does Lono suggest they do? Does he want them to prepare a small vertical slice now and show it as potential gameplay or their target gameplay? But we just had recent examples that show why that too can have issues.
@@mash9870 Yeah and I certainly get that, but that’s just kind of what Lono does. Does commentating and predictions need actionable feedback? It sort of begs the question, too, of “What can he say or what actionable feedback could he even provide that would actually sway developers?”

It's not in the same category as those two. But I think it is held in higher regard than franchises like Dishonored or Darksiders, which are both great. I do think Fable is up there, I just couldn't think of examples that fall in the same league.
Kirk said “this game looks fantastic, fun and light hearted” how could you possibly tell that without seeing gameplay. Idc how amazing the cinematics are, it tells you nothing of what this game will be. I like Kirk, he’s a nice guy but he’s not very good at being able to disagree, you can tell he was getting angry and heated, when theres no reason to be. Lono needs someone he can volley back and forth civilly
As someone who grew up loving fable and always owning an Xbox since the OG Xbox…. Lono is 100% correct in this situation. Fans and skeptics are completely fair to assume something is going on with the development of this game when there have been rumours of issues, 4 showcases in a row withcinematic trailers etc. if the gameplay was anywhere near ready they should be showing something. Even if they have 12+ months until release they should be getting close to the polishing stage and there should be plenty more they can show us. We literally know nothing about how the game is going to play or how any of the systems will work yet
Why are cinematic trailers something to be skeptical about? The old Fable games didn't really have any cinematics at all. This is new for the Fable franchise so I think they are just wanting to show that part of the game off. They're letting us know we're getting into a more story driven experience than what Fable used to be.
@@mattmacdonaldmedia2655 that’s fine but it just feels weird to me that it’s been in development this long and every showcase they just come with more cinematics. If the gameplay was looking good don’t you think they would want to show us more other than a few super short highly edited snippets mixed in with cinematics? Like 3-4 showings in a row. I hope I’m wrong because I do want this game to be good.
@@krispybowgod9656 we will get the gameplay deep dive everyone is looking for probably in January with a Developer Direct. And then the game will probably release Fall 2025 bearing no delays.
it's always amusing to me when people buy in to the "in-game footage" trope
I’m mean to be fair they said the same thing about hellblade 2 and when the game came out it looked exactly the way they said it would looked.
@@birdgang2098 senua's saga doesn't really have much gameplay, if it can even be called that, and is basically a five hour cutscene with some interactive bits, which is what a lot of its trailers showed, so i suppose you are not wrong with that example.
the core of this discussion was about a lack of gameplay on display, not that a game does not look as good as its trailers on release.
@@williamle-ed2nk but why should they have to show an extended amount of gameplay during showcase when they can just wait til January when they have their developers direct for all the major titles coming that yr??… we will see fable’s gameplay in January no need to show it at the showcase.

I’ve always found Kirk slightly annoying but this was by far the most annoying I’ve seen him act. His argumentation was so agitated right from the jump and was really making it sound like there is no merit whatsoever in people having concerns with the lack of transparency with this game. Was miserable to listen to from start to finish
Kirk's outlook is why Xbox keeps having poor output despite good showcases. Pointing out a trend is not preemptively criticizing a game.
Look at the reception to Concord. I think PS fans are dismissing it to quickly but they are very intune w/ the trends and aren't afraid to apply those trends.

Actually agreed more with kirk here. The expectation to see gameplay is weird to me. Sure it'd be nice to see, be we aren't owed anything. Being so far out yet doesn't concern me. To me, they've been setting the tone. To me, ppl feel entitled.
Of course you are owed, you are investing in their ecosystem You are Buying the game! You probably are subscribing to their mediocre service on the consistently empty promises of good games. Of course you are owed gameplay and breakdowns of the games You are PAYING for. Unless of course, you stack your $1 subscription for months and years and claim you get the games for free and then cheer that’s the way the industry will move forward, then of course you’re not owed anything. Because you don’t pay for it. That’s why Microsoft stopped selling the games to Xbox Users and are now selling them elsewhere. It is that mentality that put Xbox in last place is that mentality that will keep them there
@HeyZeus95 eh..I disagree. I own both a series x and ps5 and play my series x 95% of the time. The only time I play the ps is when they drop 1st party stuff...even then I don't buy these games. I do gamepass and gamefly and have all my bases covered. (Minus Nintendo but I can't stand them anymore) so I get all my gaming for 30 a month...less then half of a full retail release. Thing is, while I do like sony 1st party titles, I don't buy games anymore...its just not worth it for me...esp sony 1st party since it's usually a one and done. Now I will buy a game like diablo 4 since I know I'll get hundreds of hrs outta it. (That was b4 I knew it was coming to gp). For me and my money, I want the most broad spectrum of games for the cheapest price. Hell, I've always wanted that before the age of sub services. I just don't think we are owed anything. We are by far the minority in terms of gaming. We are plugged in, looking at trailers/gameplay reveals/etc vs the casual market that makes up the vast majority. I actually see both points on lonos and kirks arguement but I do lean kirk here cuz it's still 1.5 yrs away. Maybe they had nothing to show yet. Maybe they aren't willing to show yet. Time will tell. If it was this time next yr and we STILL hadn't seen gameplay, then red flags would be poppin.
They've been setting the tone for half a decade. 😕 . But I guess the less info they provide the more inclined you are to waste money on gamepass

I don't get it...this coming from a 46 yr old who USED to buy everything...till I looked at my gigantic dusty library that was just wasted $. I'm never gunna go back and replay this stuff...not in today's day and age. Theres ALWAYS new games to play. All I know is the value of gp is huge and it saves me a ton of cash. Same with gamefly when it comes to sony titles. 73 bucks is a big ask nowadays and even more expensive in other places around the world. Idk...I'm down for saving $

" Of course there are promos" and maybe you are one the 1$ early adopters. But it's proven time and time again that GP makes zero business sense for consumers and creators. I agree with Lono. Fable should be in Beta rn, July 2024, if its coming out in '25... the new dragon age hit Beta about 14 months before they changed the title. PS it will forever be called DreadWolf. Veilguard is not a better title, not even a little bit

I agree that we need to see more gameplay for Fable, but I do think that we’ve seen some already. I think it’s just so visually impressive that it looks like cutscenes but we’ve seen her fighting and walking through the city. That being said, I don’t think Kirk needed to be so aggressive or animated about this topic. It was kind of weird.
No, to me it just looks like a bunch of QTEs. As for the walking in the city, or in the forest it really gave me Senua's Saga vibes and I highly doubt this game will be fully open world, instead I think it will be linear with some open sections. Plus, seing the way it has different "narrators" I also think it's going to be an episodic adventure at best.
If kirk doesn't want to talk about games before they come out whats the use of him being on the show.

There was absolutely nothing wrong with anything they showed at the showcase, judge these games when they come out. Youre tarring every studio with the same brush to get more engagement out of drama. Halo Infinite's campaign was good? are you out of your mind? lol it has almost NO content! you can tell a ton of things were cut, it was all rinse and repeat missions, there was virtually no story and the last "level" was a horde mode. It felt good to play yes but as an actual game is was lacking in so many ways.

Her walking through the city is gameplay, her walking up to an NPC to talk is gameplay, her running through the woods towards the castle is gameplay, her walking towards the giant frog is gameplay, her firing her bow, the sword attack move & the slingshot is gameplay, attacking the groot looking character is gameplay.
You just don't realise how damn good this game looks!
I’ve been doing this long enough to know that if you have real gameplay, you make it clear the way South of Midnight did. Both fable and State of decay 3 are pulling old industry tricks of simulated gameplay in engine.

SOD3, to some extent yes, however they are making it in unreal engine 5 with help form the coalition so I wouldn't be surprised if it is genuine. But, Fable 3 gameplay is genuine, in game I think, with no hud. The engine work Playground games has done is next level and that is reflected in how good this game looks.
I bet if this was a Sony trailer, no one would be questioning if it was actual gameplay or not....

It’s not gameplay. It’s “in game footage” there’s a difference. In game footage is where they carefully select small 2 sec segments of gameplay and blend it in with the cutscenes to make the game look impressive as possible. It doesn’t represent what the actual gameplay will be like.

Well I disagree, the gameplay is clear enough to discern over the CGI clips.
I think the problem is more that people don't want to believe it will look as good as it does.

The only Xbox I ever felt was worth buying was the 360. The fable games being the biggest reasons. Between avowed, fable, and starfield I was considering buying a series console. Starfield wasn't worth it, avowed looks more like crap every time they show it, and fable has shown nothing but concern at this point. All those defenses of fable are bs and claiming it's 16 months out should have been called out because we don't know it may release in January and be 8 months out

That’s why the have a deveployers direct every January to showcase the games coming that yr. It’s amazing ppl can’t be patient but also want developers to take their time and not release broken games.

Fable shows a trailer with IN-GAME right at the front. What's wrong? Simulated? Follows a trend of there other games. Other than the trash fire of Redfall what other games? Is it just Redfall? Cause if my count is correct every 1st party this gen is 80 or above except for Redfall.
In game cinematic aren't the same as gameplay
only 3 xbox first party games have gotten above a 80 from the users this gen. Hi fi rush, forza horizon 5 and ghostwire tokyo. Anthem, no man sky, and starfield are examples of why trailers can not be trusted.

Lol, I dunno but this Kirk just came across like he was tryin to be overtly edgy just to be edgy. I think he said it all when he said it's a franchise he loves so any criticism seems to be invalid to him, that's just how I took it. I think it's very reasonable to believe something is wrong here, especially with how much drama has been going on with Xbox. So for as long as it's been they should easily have more to show.

The concrete evidence of Microsoft game quality difficulties is Microsofts recent quality of their AAA releases. What more substantial reason for concern is there than what you've delivered lately?
Playground games is the outlier,not saying they're hands off criticism but their track record speaks for itself.

The things people enjoyed from previous Fable games hasn't been demonstrated in this reboot. It's likely a different game with the same title. Everyone is in the business of washing ideas instead of making them these days.
Seems to me they showed with the latest trailer that you can make choices. Of both good and evil. Which is one of the biggest things about the Fable series.
