That is a classic move on the way to get the crowds attention you make them focus right on you instead of their phones or whatever and then you catch them with the story or the joke

Fun fact, he was actually saying "ya mashinu" which, while sounds like "I'm the machine", actually means "I'm a car." So he's basically running around St. Petersburg in the 90s with a bunch of russian gangsters yelling "I'M A CAR!"
And yeah, sounds about right for Russia in the 90s. Everything was run by the mafia until the government decided that the best way to get rid of the mafia problem was to (no shit) give all the gangsters government jobs.

Used to work at a Russian Studies center, and i made sure to show this to all our grad students. The Professors were like "certainly probable", lol
This story is corroborated by his class mates. You can even find a photo of him standing next to members of the Russian mob wearing his stupid ass Fanny pack he described. The movie Van Wilder was actually loosely based on him, because of how crazy his 20s were.

This bit Is a true story (more or less) that he told his friends Joe Rogan, Bill Burr, and Tom Segura. They convinced him to make a bit out of the story. I have seen it a few other times and this is the best version of it imo.
The original telling on camera is from the Joe Rogan Experience. He told Joe and Brian Redban the story with added details like actually partying with the cops but having to just run away from them bc they were crazier than the mafia. Joe told him there it was a fantastic story that he had to do on stage.
I was a kid in 96, my dad was a prof who went to Russia with some students. I showed this to him he was like yea, that's exactly how it was. We had to pay off the mob too, i saw a dead gangster on a train platform, etc. Bert actually lucky to be alive 😅
In another interview, he talks about how the teachers had a meeting with original Igor and he was like "I gave them Burt for a reason. If they didn't party with Burt, bad shit would've happened." Then the teachers had Burt party with them again on the train ride back

This is maybe my 12th time watching this story and I’m kinda realizing how much of a story telling genius Bert is. He must’ve proof read and edited the story so many times and asked others to read it as well. He glossed over so much material for this to be a perfect comedy story. Also he made a very serious situation super hilarious from him being forced to take a Russian class for 2 years to him being involved with the Russian mafia. He makes it all jokes. And he’s a great speaker overall. Telling a story is not easy
Check out the version where he first tells the story to Joe Rogan. It was very raw then. It's interesting to see the progress from that version.

LOL. You know what makes this so much more entertaining, watching this after 3 years of Half & Jai releasing it? I saw and learned things I didn't notice before. When Bert's eyebrows and head tilted up, so did Jai's; when his head lowered, so did hers; when he shook his head, there went Jai's head. She was so into this that it was comedy in, and of itself. She is pure comedy all by herself. I mean, Half laughed too, but her facial and visual cues were great. Go back and watch this again - you won't be disappointed.

Bert is a bad ass. At the end of his shows, he takes up donations sometimes thousands, and he gives all of it to the servers that work in the club he performs in. GREAT dude.

I hadn't heard of him but I volunteer usher at a theater that gets music groups, touring Broadway shows and comedians. I told my kids I was ushering this show and they told me I was going to like him. He was hilarious. Great show! Another comedian I had never heard of I also saw there at another show I ushered. Her name is Jeanne Robertson. Check out her Naked Bungee jumping, River rafting with Baptists or her pound cake spots. She is in her 70's and gives the audience the recipe card for the pound cake, gives away the rocking chair she has in the show and takes a picture with anyone that wants after the show. She's a really sweet lady and funny.

Discovered this comedian during our Civic lockdown, and could NOT get enough! Had to stream every special / show I could find. My fave bit is about his youngest daughter, Iyla, she seems like a "chip off the old block" as they say. He has a great Netflix series as well. If you need to lift your spirits, this irreverent guy will do the trick!

Haha I'm Mexican-American & don't speak Spanish very well. I took Spanish in high school & since I'm Hispanic I was automatically put in an advanced Spanish class. I made the teacher aware of my lack of Spanish & she told me to just chill all semester & she'll pass me. So I was hanging out with the Seniors, didn't learn squat & got a B 🤷♀️🤣🤣

Glad to see this one on your channel! Bert also had a show on The Travel Channel a few years ago called Trip Flip. He'd go around town to find a random couple, ask what they're trip was about. Then completely change their trip plans & paid for everything, made sure they always had a hotel suite & took them to some amazing places.
