I did immediately think of the other story as soon as you told of the thumb going into the mouth...I then thought of Tom thumb and thought "of course" the thumb is our power as in thumbs up, thumbs down and all that we have created and craft with our thumbs...I also wondered if thumb sucking had anything to do with these stories...Our ability to use our tools we craft, whether for war or peace all because of our thumbs...Oh, the thumb short yet powerful...Also I thought of how it is said that salmon is brain food...So many lessons can be gleaned from a good story...❤Peace...

Super, utterly superb, even by your usual lofty standards. The Celtic material is always dream-like but the part about the life-cycle of the salmon - swimming both backwards and forwards in the river of time is full-on psychedelic. And yes you are quite right about the Welsh-Irish crossovers - in West Wales many of the ogham carvings are Iriish-Wlesh bilingual. Many thanks for all your work!

All that shapeshifting of Taliesin must have shamanic roots.
The Fian was actually a real thing that young men joined after leaving fosterage, up until they were old enough to inherit land. They did act as stand in army for the king, but them being a protective special unit that specifically just acted as bodyguards is a later addition.
Cumhail is pronounced 'Cool" in modern Irish, but it would have been Kuv-al in older Irish.
THe salmon isn't the original version of Finn getting access to Imbas. An older tale tells how he chased some women into a sídhe and jammed his thumb in the door, and they spilled liquid from the vase they were carrying onto his thumb.

@@TheStoryCrow the oldest source is from the old Irish period (and doesn't have the women I Mentioned). It's from a story from the old Irish period,and is from a tale called bruiden áth í.

"He made a thrust at him as he went into the fairy mound, and thereby his back broke. His hand stuck fast against the door post so that the door valve closed on his thumb and he put it into his mouth. Therefore, some say that hence it it is that Find obtained Knowledge, for he used to put into his mouth the portion of his finger that had gone into the fairy mound"

Wish I understood more old (and contemporary) Irish, it would help unpack a lot more…
Many years ago I tried Salvia Divinorum. The room disappeared and two giant snakes were with me. One behind travelling from my left to my right, and the other in front of me travelling from right to left, its eye seemed fixed on me. Both had zig zag patterns on their backs. The one behind me opened its zig-zag pattern, like giant jaws. In an instant, SNAP, I was folded in two and I knew, because they told me, that they wanted to take me down to show me something. I was taken by surprise and fear and jumped up, the room returning, apologising and thanking them, saying “I wasn’t expecting that at all, I don’t think I’m ready for that, but maybe another time?” I kind of wish I’d gone with them. Maybe one day I’ll conquer that fear. Maybe I won’t be given another chance.
I don’t think I’ve ever stepped out of the snake filled anti chamber 😂 only after I’ve been squished and printed back into this reality. Strange plant.
