@@JonahLobeDraws I second this. This was awesome. Maybe free bite sized design theory/lectures/insights like this on this channel often for free, then a supplement of a more in depth paid tutorial in between every now and then. Random idea.. Anways, great stuff Jonah.

Yes, more of these types of vids please.. super informative, especially since I'm trying to really learn how to do better storytelling in my art.. this piece is one of my favorites of your work, but I've already said that a few times haha.

This was a fantastic video. So often I forget how the small things like putting simple thought into shape design can really add to the story. How do you remind yourself when doing composition thumbnails, to really think of relationships or stories where there is a very vague idea/concept? I'd love to see your process of thumbnailing and hearing your explanation!
Thanks so much Mikaru! I've been thinking more and more about how to create a story in my thumbnails. I generally focus on the large blocks or shapes and their essential relationship to others in the piece. Then I work down into the specifics.

the Rusty yellowish blood is remarkably effective at communicating just how long this fight must've been going on for.
You know it doesn’t come thru over digital but that’s actually gold ink! The prints of this are all blood in gold ink ;)

very helpful indeed! though considering the low view count on this 3 year old vid, it doesn't seem to be a popular format. I guess most people enjoy tutorials more (where you can see the creation of the piece instead of discussing the finished artwork). speed up art process videos are so popular, which start out as a indiscernable mess (to the untrained eye) out of which a beautiful piece of art is created. i have the theory that people who don't do art but rather see themselves of consumers of art like to think of the artistic process as kinda "magical" in which the "genius artist" just knows "instinctively" what to do; disspelling the magic like this probably ruins the experience for some people who want to believe in the genius artist myth.

My pleasure! It also doesn't get great views because it was one of my first videos, and you're right, people like watching the art come together on their own. Someone once told me that the intention with videos that show progress is to lend the audience a sense of "vicarious experience," ie they FEEL like they're making the art when they're watching it come together. Makes sense - if you're not an artist, you might crave that feeling!

Thank you for your reply! It's very encouraging to hear those words from an artist like you. Reddit is amazing for meeting people like you said, if you are not hesitant to connect with people like I do :) Also I read on instagram that you were a Bethesda dev and can't pass the opportunity to ask a question since I haven't met anyone in the industry before. How hard or unfair is the work in general? You know, I heard that the devs in the industry are constantly crunching for the crazy deadlines and more. Sorry if I am disturbing you but this is something I wanted to learn for a while since becoming a game dev is my ambition for a while and hearing these things made me a little discouraged to be honest :)
@@burakkorkmaz5529 Hi Burak! Good question. It can be very hard for some people at some companies, but not at all companies. Bethesda was pretty good about avoiding crunch-times but programmers always got it worst (thank goodness for me!). Nice to meet you! You can find me on Twitter and Instagram too, FYI!
