  • Lighting a fire, using a traditional flint and steel. Char cloth ember catcher, with cramp ball ember extender. Tinder nest made of dried grass and moss.
This video is a little long, but wanted to keep things realistic, to give a better idea of how things usually turn out.

Great vid Adam, your choice of cramp ball as an ember extender was defo' the right choice judging by the effort you needed to get it aflame. Cold and damp never make life easy so I like the fact your vid is longish...I could almost feel the effort you put into it....kinda like muscle memory when you have done something a few times before ;-)

Thanks Rob. It's definitely something that's better with repetition, that's for sure. I should really do more of it lol.
      All the best

Thanks mate. To be fair I was lucky with the dry moss, and dried grass. If it was damp I would have had a lot more trouble.

There was certainly a lot of blowing involved lol.
I use a Mic J 044 lapel mic, plugged into a Zoom H1, using a mono to stereo adapter. It's small enough to put in my pocket (chest pocket in this video), but the sound is quite reasonable.

Dear Adam, nice video. Thanks for sharing. By the way, why do you keep using ver small piece of char choth ? any point? Because I ve done once, keep a litle box full off char choth , when Ive strike the ember get easy in the box...and with a brusell(tool) put the charc cloth where I want so.... Bu if have any reason to keep small, please tell me. Bet wishes. Eduardo

Thanks Eduardo. The only reason I use a small piece, is to make it last longer really. When I was shown how to do it years ago, we used a 2 inch square piece of char cloth (5cm square), which is still quite small.
It's definitely easier to use more though, as the ember lasts longer :)
