Thanks for sharing Adam. I have tended to shy away from the axe on my journey into bushcraft so far but about 6 hrs ago I took delivery of a Hultafors Agdor axe. I am just waiting for my chain-mail protection suit to be delivered now ! Take care & all the best, Neil.

windy1965 lol, Thanks Neil. The thing that makes axes more dangerous than other tools, is the weight and therefore momentum behind the cutting edge. Put that with the longer handle meaning less control, and you've got a tool that needs a lot of respect, as well as safe practice to use.
For small fires you can usually find plenty of wood to burn without splitting any, but there are the odd occasion where you may need to use one.
All the best mate, and stay safe.

Great advice Adam, I think many people don't realise how dangerous axes can be until they end up having a nasty accident. Like you I only use an Axe if I have too and try and put safety first. ATB Jeff

Mint Outdoors The same with any cutting tool really, but axes can tend to be more dangerous than others

Delimping branches is actually on the outside, not on the inside. Because the head will be stuck in the v shape. If you are scrared it will deflect cut first 90 degrees on the start of the beginning of the branch so you create a flat cut.

Trailtraveller I've always been taught the other way. Was there an old method and a new method?
