I just place the buildings down in a rough outline, and then start playing tetris with them until I come up with something that looks half-decent. Thanks to the copy/paste/cut buttons, it's very easy to make changes while things aren't built yet, that's why I have planning mode on all the time.

Yes, it's launching a rocket. But just as in all the other factory games, the "end goal" is more of a suggestion than anything. :)
