Nooo missed it
Dammit I missed
:)
Mobian or PostMarketOS seem to be the best out there, especially the latter. Phosh is also a "desktop" that I'd like to see. Thanks for the great videos!
Phosh is GNOME
@@Shirayuki_39 No, Phosh just uses some GNOME technologies like GTK and gsettings and GNOME apps. Other than that it has nothing to do with GNOME and also has it's own wayland compositor called phoc and own onscreen keyboard called squeekboard.
I want to see Niccolo testing GNOME Shell Mobile, Phosh and Ubuntu Touch, it would be pretty neat!
The phone works for everything except being a phone!
Sad to see that battery is the killer. But its good to see that it was mostly a good experience.
For the battery, I blame SystemD
@@marcopeterson805 How does that even make any sense?
Other than other OSes, one thing I'd like to see you try is GNOME's new mobile UI. It looks absolutely amazing, and not only just highly usable, but also with a great material theming that looks modern
I love how embarrassed you are about the TikTok habit. We all have our vices, it’s fine. This was really a great video, though. The out of the box customization present for the interface surprised me - as did the audio abilities.
For me, text, calls, and navigation are the essentials. As for the next DE to try, I really don’t know much about any odd them. So I guess I’m interested in whatever you are.
The problem is TikTok is very bad. The CCP collects personal information on everyone using TikTok.
This can later be used in bad ways.
it looks so much better then when i had it on my pinephone KDE edition truly unfortunate that the OG hardware was kinda lacking :( would love to run this.
Don't worry, it'll be usable in another 10 years.
on god
So 2033 is the year of mobile Linux? Let me mark it in my calendar.
Awesome video as always, Cheers!
I'd love to see more! I hope we'll see properly working Linux phones soon...
check back at the end of this year or the next
Android technically. But too much Google, Slash E, kde phone and Ubuntu touch are appealing
I would like to see a video trying the other systems with the angle of looking at what they do better/worse than your current experience.
Thanks. This is the best video on Plasma Mobile yet :D
Great video as always, Nicco!
I always had a question and I never found an answer on-line:
Why (what is the technical reason) Plasma have two different shells to desktop and mobile, including a totally different set of Gear applications and widgets? Is the team pursuing an unification of default apps and shell, making something completly convergent, like GNOME is doing? One single set of packages that work on everything?
You would have a single codebase for everything and implementing something like a Samsung Dex would be pretty easy (I think).
I really would want to dive in some technical details about this.
I never would have thought someone would track all of their time and use tiktok. Your a multidimensional person.
I would love to see a review for gnome on phone
I would like to see Mobian, Ubuntu Touch, or PostmarketOS. These 3 seem to be talked about the most, and I haven't seen any updated videos on how they operate.
the camera quality looks so good
I would really hope you could try Sailfish OS.
It is much less linuxy than other Linux OSes, and it is partly closed source, all drawbacks.
But I have used Sailfish OS as my main and only mobile OS for last 7 years, so it is certainly a usable daily OS, granted with A LOT of papercuts. Also the Pinephone experience is not as good as if you used officially supported Sony phone, but it should still be a better experience than any other alternative. Piggz did an amazing job on the port.
Really nice👍
I love how he didn’t cut the last part of the clip 2:03
2:07 "no pinephoje were damaged in creation of this video" 🤣🤣🤣
When I noticed the heartstopper book behind the pinephone I was like; 😮... 😆🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
A video on alternate degoogled android OSes such as /e/-OS, lineage OS etc could also be interesting (and potentially fit your audience)
Not quite, android roms are still android and those work quite the same.
That looks good and I'm very happy to see that development is so far already. The biggest advantage of Linux is that it is benevolent. Android has also linux kernel, but is google benevolent? I think google is just using open source same way as Vatican is using their choir boys..
of course we'd like to see other distros on this phone
Any recommendation for the OG Pinephone now that Mobian kind of gave up on it? I'll have to look into how to flash another OS on it.
I'd love to see a proper rundown of Ubuntu Touch on the OG Pinephone now that it has been released but as I understood it's not a full blown desktop OS like Mobian is for instance.
Im interested to see those other mobile shells (phosh, sailfish, ubuntu touch) but im also interested in seeing a comparison on how they run on "normal" android phones like, say, a oneplus 7 or google pixel as opposed to the pinephone.
I would like to see more plasma mobile videos. You know kde programs best. It would be nice if there was a link in the video, where I could get the product.
Love the heartstopper book as a phone stopper lol
Yes, Do a video on other pmOS interfaces (phosh, gnome and sxmo)
Does sideloading the phot app through waydroid work? Something like libreCamera or an open fork of the Gcam
I've got a OnePlus 6 I bougth for cheap, to test pmOS on. The thing thats a dealbraker in most interfaces (aka DesktopEnvironments) is that the sensor for auto screen rotation is not working yet, and the display settings of both Gnome and Plasma are too impractical and often don't work... If I could hit a button combo or gesture to rotate, I could maybe make it work.
Also, the keyboard doesn't pop up when I need it, so a button/gesture for that would be cool too.
There is one interface that adresses both issues: sxmo, but that has weird audio problems on my phone for some reason.
Anyway, would love it if you checked out sxmo and lomiri (if/when it finally returns to pmOS).
I really hope for some consumer ready Linux phone to succeed, I'd get one immediately! I'm tired of Android (Linux done *wrong*) and couldn't care less for Apple. Keep up the good work, Niccolò!
Heartstopper, amazing :D
In my testing (with the non-pro Pinephone) Updating on EMMC kept on breaking for me. Updating on SD card was fine though?
i could totally see this being installed on a tablet for productivity purposes.
Try e-os
ALso, are things like Kai OS and other firefox derivatives capable of runing on it? we never talk about those
On the application fronts I personally have the problem that my application of choice is not really usable on android (taskwarrior) while it would work perfectly fine on plasma mobile via terminal.
That being said the other issues seem far more problematic. I can deal with a lack of applications, but the main system needs to be reliable. Calling / sms / notifications need to be reliable. I need to be able to trust the phone not randomly dying and freezing.
Hi Nicco, would love an update on the plasma phone. Kinda want to put plasma on my phone since android is just giving me headaches rn.
Does any sim card work with this phone and what phone provider? Maybe T-Moblie? Thank you
Can't wait for Plasma mobile to be stable enough to daily drive :D
There are some gnome apps built specially for mobile. Some are gtk versions like Telegrand for Telegram desktop (it suppossed that telegram desktop works okish in phosh) reddit and discord, some others have recent gtk versions for mobile.
Ubuntu touch is good. IDK if there is a version for the pinephone pro, but it works quite well with webapps, tiktok for example.
Sailfish is illegal in my continent but, it seems quie polish.
Not quite sure if you want to try sway in the pinephone too.
Which current linux phone OS might have the best battery support, let's find it out.
Does phone from postmarketos project will be better than pinephon, for example oneplus 6?
How is security and privacy compared to Graphene OS?
i didn't know conversions in the search bar were possible. i tried it in gnome, apparently that information comes from the calucator
Two things 1) can enter password without an issue... That's already better than iOS in my opinion.
2) when doing a phone demoninise a downward camera on the phone on the table. You don't need to do that Nicco but might be worth trying if you do more phone stuff.
I don't have a tripod to do that!
Yes i want to see that :-) all of them. maybe the next could be one that is most likely to work fine? and after that the next failing one? and so on :D I have no Idea. I even dont know what phosh is? Maybe try phosh i guess.
I've published the Phosh one just yesterday, check it out!!
19:11 happened on first day (it came preinstalled with manjaro). long time ago and same issue.
did you use an alternative modem firmware?
I use habits too. I love that app
Does your alarm ring to the exact timing set?
you said that you can change the volume of every single app can you do like android different volume of timer, music and ringtone?
Not only that. For every single app you can change the audio volume, just like you do in Plasma desktop with Pulseaudio.
where is the link to the phone mentioned in the video?
Heartstopper ❤️❤️
I don't know about anybody else but I would like a review of every mobile DE available on that PinePhone.
Loved that "exiting vim is easier than exiting this screen" ahahahahahahaha
By the way i'd like to know about Ubuntu Touch, being that it's often ported to Android phones i'm curious on what it's capable of
I would love to see a video on another Linux phone OS. I was furious about all the bloatware/spyware on the Pixel 7, so I got my money back and bought a Pinephone Pro.... I do need a working phone though so I hope to find an OS that at least manages the hardware ok, and Waydroid for everything else?
Could you try it with Ubuntu touch?
Nice
The battery management does seem to be an issue (identical model to yours). I've had mine plugged in all day and when I woke it up, it was at 17%. It started charging again after I'd woken it up. Think I'd benefit from a fast charger with this (and a "convergence" hub so I can actually use the Terminal with a keyboard!).
I would love to see other OSes being tried with this. I'll probably stick with KDE on mine though since I prefer Plasma and keep an eye out for any improvements.
Early on there were some bootloader issues that made charging quite wonky. I'd try flashing Tow-Boot and installing something like Mobian to see if your problems are still present.
your avatar gets a like from me
@@protocetid Thanks feel free to use it if you want, it's GPL as far as I'm concerned. I have a few variants for different colour schemes & target resolutions & would be happy to share the GIMP .xcf files I made somehow.
Still, it gets the point across I guess. I should make a similar version for Crapple.
@@mskiptr Sorry YT did its usual excellent job of notifying me of replies. This power charging issue still seems flaky; if I wake the phone up it seems to resume charging. TBH it's likely the adaptor I'm using which may be part of the problem.
I need to get back on the Forums to gain more insight into the progress on the Manjaro ARM side of things. I'd be interested in Mobian as well but for the time being I'd sooner see how well Plasma Mobile ends up matching with the Plasma I use daily on my PCs.
I have very little experience with mobile OSs so would probably find it harder switching around to see what worked better.
I always thought this, this square and flat and lines style of Plasma don't look good. Gnome Mobile makes this very clear, but unfortunately I don't see what would be a "solution" to improve Plasma (Mobile) looks.
From my experience Mobian with Phosh works much better on my PinePhone Pro. But it still need a lot of tiny configurations for better work. More over, I had to build megapixels application with special patches for PinePhone Pro support, because official package does not have it...
I would love to switch to a linux phone but i'm stuck using either android or ios because my bank only has native apps for those two platforms and its used for 2fa to log into the banking website as well. I don't have any other apps i need android or ios for so it sucks i have to still use it because i need it for online banking. My phone is also my primary camera so a linux phone needs to have a good camera.
Also what about contact list?
It seems rather laggy and choppy.. I would love to use a Linux phone, but the software does not appear ready yet.
I would really like to seeing a gnome shell video
Why is it kinda "laggy"? Is it hardware or software? How would it run on a Pixel for example?
It's a bit of both. On a high end phone it probably would run flawless or almost
is there linux terminal? i only really care bout that.
I want to see GNOME stuff :)
the sleep bug is because you maybe have the pre tow-boot verion of the pinephone-pro
Love that while testing a phone you said you don't make phone calls... LOL. If you only use web messaging, tiktok (ouch!) and such, try a tablet instead ;)
I know this comes as a shock, but tablets don't fit in my pockets
@@niccoloveslinux small pockets though :) Using Fedora KDE Plasma Desktop Edition spin I love your videos! Keep the good work, specially on Plasma_6 floating panels!
Yes Gnome shell
A lot of linux applications were made thinking to be displayed into a standard monitor, to fix that the developer should build thinking in small devices which is unlikely for every existent application out of there. That means we shouldn't expect getting every linux app to get support for smartphones.
Getting waydroid support out of the box for linux seems more feasible and a realistic solution. And yes, it is a virtualization technique and it will consume resources, but it offers the ability to run android apps in linux. And to be fair, even Android runs in some sort of container which is initialize by a linux kernel.
gnome shell mobile but i would like to see a video about any of these
I would like to see unity mobile as well
The "camera shyness" probably comes from you using your index finger while the device is static, instead of using your thumbs while holding the device. That happens with almost every device.
there are third party launcher for telegram made specifically for linux mobile
man i'd kill for KDE mobile. i wait patiently for the day this is possible 🙇♂
Heartstopper chad
I neeeeeeed habits !!!
My android phone just died and I'm saddened by this news you bring me.
I guess 2023 is not the year of the Linux Smartphone
10:00 blender would probably run better on my phone than it runs on my pc anyway (if it has arm version)
if you can make it run sailfish, really try sailfish
try every os please
It's a pretty fuzzy Linux phone
I will die on this hill: I'd much rather have access to Linux apps (including launcher versions of kde and gnome) on my Android phone than use Linux an my mobile OS. At least for now.
I can't use Linux OS because I can't install WhatsApp for work
Linux phone will take another 20 years to develop
First?
edit: Yes boi!
It seems you are using Redmi as your daily driver. Be careful with it. MIUI is weird in terms of privacy and security
Not sure what the point of a Mobile version of a desktop. People don't use it. Apple and Android will be the default. There are enthusiants that use these OS but honestly it's time and effort that could be put into the main desktop project which does get the majority of users.
I've used three versions of phones with "real Linux" over the years. Nokia N900 with Maemo & Meego as well as a Jolla with Sailfish. All superior to Android. If I could afford an extra phone I wouldn't hesitate to swap back nor do I know if two functions are available (BankID (national ID system) and Swish (direct pay system).
But I sure miss the response, stability and configurability compared to the annoyingly locked and slow Android.
i would like to see ubuntu touch but please dont use tiktok on it
Waydroid!!!
I'm insulting you about Tik Tok :)
What is interesting about Tik Tok. I dont understand how people could be interested in short form video content for anything more than dumb memes.
10:48 no tiktok on Plasma Mobile is probably a good thing since it's just a Chinese propaganda tool designed to destroy the west although no WhatsApp and mostly-unusable Telegram is not good but I guess that's another reason to move over to Matrix...
I would use a chat alternative if my contacts would do the same. No use having the perfect chat client if all your friends use the crappy one and you end up talking to nobody.
tik tok non fa bene alla salute mentale.
Totally unrelated but you have the Heartstopper book 🥹
Yess
