Linux Phone vs. De-Googled Android AOSP - Which is better for Privacy?

  • There are two options to get some privacy when using mobile phones. These are Linux Phones and AOSP (De-Googled) Phones. Which are better?
    These two types of devices operate on different privacy principles and this video gets into how one type of device deals with data exclusion while the other approach deals with data disinformation.
    Linux Phones can be Ubuntu Touch (Nexus 5, Oneplus One), Pinephone (Ubuntu Touch, Debian/Phosh, Nemo/Sailfish, etc.), Librem 5 (Phosh, Ubuntu Touch) and many new ones coming out soon.
    AOSP (De-googled) include LineageOS with No GAPPS, /e/ Foundation. GrapheneOS, and my own BraxROM. These are all fine. They just use different devices. All have no Google on them and are built in a similar way.
    Some of these are available on my store so check the link below.

      @@Techie-ks9nh He keeps recommending graphene OS which is absolutely stupid since that means he also recommends that you use a google phone and give google your money so they can develop better spying tools. He also completely ignores the possibility of the hardware itself collecting data and sending it to google.
      Also not a fan of these sensationalist titles like: "THIS is the most private and secure phone on the planet - GrapheneOS review and how to install" Especially if it's a lie.
      But overall I'm happy he's spreading awareness about privacy, even if it's a bit flawed.

There are some mobile friendly softwares also(Nautilus, calculator, evence document reader, empathy, address book phonebook, calendar, clock alarm stopwatch, GNOME Control Centre & All other gnome softwares ... etc). finally you can run any linux server application on a linux mobile. eg:(Apache, Postfix, voip, VPNs, SSH, php, tomcat curl ... etc).

This way, you can also get the newest version of the app, and you're not dealing with an outdated APK.Aurora store also tells you what apps have trackers and what trackers they have.
      If you use the F-droid versions of the apps, they usually don't have trackers, and most apps are open source, and 100% free.

    I'm an iOS developer and there's an important thing that people should know;
    There are "developers" and there are "SUPER DEVELOPERS". Google is a super developer because they are not subject to the same Apple "approval" process that is required for the rest of us. Google can BYPASS the app approval process. HOWEVER, they are still subject to the same app requirements and when Google was caught violating the Apple app agreement, Apple SUSPENDED them. Also, if your iOS app is LEGIT, there is a "PERMISSIONS LIST" in the app code that requires myself (or any other coder) to WARN YOU when we are going to use a device on your phone such as the MIC or the CAMERA and we must add our own custom text that appears when you first run that app that asks for your permission to use these devices and explains how and when they will be accessed. If companies are violating this policy, then they're doing so either WITHOUT Apple's knowledge or WITH Apple's blessing.

    I moved over to LineageOS with no Gapps a while back now, what triggered this was one day when entering something in to my diary I decided not to as it was not something I particularly wanted Google to know about, I then realised what a ridiculous situation this is where my personal diary is shared with strangers against my will...
    BTW-A vital feature in my opinion of any phone which is often overlooked is the ability to be able to back it up and quickly restore to a replacement phone if needed, this can easily be done with TWRP but usually seems impossible on a standard phone. Google will kindly offer to back up all your data but apart from the privacy issues I have found this not to work very well and also if any app you use is removed from the app store then you can not get it or your data back.

      Depends on the phone. Using a Google phone, or a Samsung, or other mainstream phone, its easy. Using the 50$ prepaid Walmart phone, or other obscure phone, its impossibly difficult. Got to the TWRP website and look at their list of compatible devices. Then select a device, if you don't already have one that's on the list, buy it, follow the instructions for install on that device. These instructions can usually be found on XDA Developers. Avoid One Touch rooting apps. As where sometimes they work, most of the time they don't and the PC VERSION is not only incompatible with Linux, but will give your Windows PC a virus! Usually it's required to root your phone before you can install the custom recovery TWRP. Once the custom recovery is installed you can flash any OS you want. Although if the OS is incompatible with your Hardware, you will brick your phone. Fancy paper weight. The older a phone gets the easier it is to root. Good luck.

    The problem with the disinformation approach is that Google will still know what address you return to each night to sleep, the identities of the people who refer to you as "Dad", etc. I've seen Google piece the bits of information together and figure out who I was so well that after I created my new Google ID one evening and then went to gmail from my work computer the next day, it brought up my brand new account, already logged in. I had never accessed that account from that machine.

More privacy root access via terminal and full transparency, the combination of desktop and mobile environments and some apps + the graphic are really good (;

    Cant you get the same privacy approach with a de-googled phone by just not using MicroG & opting out of all google services while still having much more app support?
    In my eyes dis-information is still information, they will get your ip address & can extrapolate device information through performance metrics. Any small amount of data Google gets is a threat, & when only a few people use this option & all of a sudden you stop phoning in to google services & a user sending dis-information pops up with the same ip address, its pretty trivial for google to know its you.
    Obviously the amount of data the can collect is still greatly limited but you're in no way anonymous to google when using google services, just feel like thats important to mention.

      I don't think he has a store. You would have to order from his web store. Also, if you have a relatively popular android phone now you can look up a tutorial on how to unlock its bootloader and install lineage os on it. For many phones there are even tutorials on youtube and anyone with time on their hands can do it. Just backup all your data first.

    It's hard to find any reviews on practical apps for a Linux phone, probably because few people use them. I've watched several of your videos, but you don't go into much detail on the usability of apps on Linux phones. Do you have one that I missed, or a recommended web site that has that info? Hey Rob, new sub here. You are speaking MY language - PRIVACY! It sounds like you have really been digging in to this for a while. GOOD FOR YOU! I am taking another route for absolute privacy, and that is by Running my OWN Phone switch in an old extra computer I have, and then connecting to it from various devices using VOIP. Since I run the switch and all my calls go from my Land Line, I think it is about as secure is it gets. Does this make sense to you? The Phone switch software is Open Source and I can call from computers, tablets, anything that run Linux! In fact, I only have laptops working right now while testing. The phones will be the next big addition. I do need a Data plan from my wireless carriers (T-Mobile and AT&T right now) but they are pretty cheap for as little data as I am using. I only use their data plan to get back to my switch. And they don't have anything to do with the phone calls at all. I like the idea of being my own phone company. I am using a little external data modem to give me TCP.IP on any little computer I want to hook up. At the very least I am learning a whole lot. I got this little box with the service which is small external 3G or 4G modem with service, and it is all I need to hook up any little linux test computers. It is fun and a learning experience, at the very least.
    Cheers, Richard
    P.S. I am slowly getting caught up on your videos based on needs and interest, not all in order.

    How would one go about making a transition from iOS to Linux or a De-googled phone? In particular, my biggest concern would be to not lose very personal and important data, such as photos, contacts, and calendar entries. There are probably other categories, but those are the top 3. If the internal data storage of the new phone were less than my iPhone, I could see that complicating matters further. Should I assume that I should also move away from my iMac and toward a PC or Linux computer? I have to confess, all that work feels VERY daunting! My apologies if you've already made a video addressing this and I just haven't spotted it. Thanks in advance for your help!

      This is a year later, but you could just do it manually. It will take a few hours, but once it's done it's done. Transfer all your images from your phone to your computer (iMac or PC, doesn't matter) and save them somewhere (on the computer, on an external drive, in a cloud, your choice). I'm sure there are export tools that can export contact and calendar information from the iOS format to a more open format, which you can use to transfer them to your new phone. If there aren't, it "only" takes max ½-2 hours to do it manually (depending on how much info you have). This is how we had to do it before smartphones, it really isn't that difficult, just takes a few hours.

    safety in linux is a false hope...even IF a trillion dollar corporate giant was unable to find the resources to track you through open source linux, they don't actually need to, you are STILL tracked by the hole you leave...still tracked by the devices people around you carry, the devices you interact with in the world. Dont get me wrong, it is slightly better, but the not magic cloak of invisibility you might like.

    Nice video, Rob! Thank you for that! Just one question: If I use LineageOS and I install say Telegram by the help of Aurora. So Aurora creates a fake identity, but at the same time Telegram is tied to my telephone number. Is Google able to extract that information from Telegram? This actually concerns any app, not only Telegram, where you provide your identity to the app.

    • @robbraxmantech
      @robbraxmantech  4 года назад +7

      No it will not extract that identity and the login to Telegram will not crossover to other apps. I am concerned separately about phone numbers with signal/telegram but maybe the best way is to use a new phone number that doesn't appear in anyone's contact list (of real contacts)

    Librem 5 and smartphones all have GPS chips in them, so if you turn off the modem switch in Librem 5, the GPS will still log your whereabouts so once the modem has been turned back on, it will update everywhere you have been. Also, turning off your Pine phone is not a convenient way to stop tracking. Maybe there is a reason for this...?

    I still use a rooted Huawei mate 9 with magisk. Both Sim slots are populated with tracfone cards that are linked to mickey mouse Hotmail accounts. I only replenish minutes/data via tracfone cards purchased with cash. I always turn location off except when I momentarily use it with maps or wechat, then back off... But whose location is Google tracking anyway? Correct, Mickey Mouse's!
    My method is to foil snoopers at the source - through identity disinformation. I know this isn't the ultimate in privacy, which is why I ask that you rate it.

    I bet you wonder why you do not have more sales from your store. The reason is for a tech guy, and no personal offense is intended, the link to your store is at the bottom, and more importantly your website is not easy to navigate. Even when you click on the correct link, then you have to click on another link just to get to your store. Also it looks like one must sign up just to browse what you have for sale.
    So while I and others might want to buy some of your items (like you describe in the video), it is a pain to try and find them.
