BTW the part number book you have, did you do it yourself or did you buy it somewhere?

@@manpache86 Hi Manny, I aim to be as accurate as possible but I do make mistakes so I may yet get bumped from Guru status. The book with the part numbers is from a local Canadian wholesaler in 2008. I hope your project or maintenance issue that brought you here is going well! Thanks for watching and commenting, Cheers!

@@nigel-Rollercam-channel hey we all make mistakes, but that's beauty of it. I have a 92 Cabriolet and so far I'm doing things here and there. Last that happen is I replaced the front suspension and the passenger side cv axel somehow loosen after I put everything back together. One day I was driving and it came off, breaking the cv axel bolts. Now I'm having to put it back together and hope that it can be running again. There a lot other things that little by little I would like to replace so it can be as smooth as possible. So videos like yours help so much.
Thank you again! Enjoy the coffee!

I bought the Quick Jack and am much happier working under my 98 MK1 Cabriolet. I bought the MK1 for my wife and have had to replace all rubber, and maintenance parts, including the oil pan due to a huge dent in it from the PO. I still need a steering rack rebuild.

Hey I replaced my bushings, Techtonics kit, also installed the short shifter and weighted rod. Had to replace the black boot underneath as mine was destroyed. Now all done, it feels really stiff forward and aft. Added grease at all the right spots during the install…I cut the accordion on the boot, the hole for the long rod that runs underneath, still stiff. Wasn’t stiff before I installed everything.

I'm curious what kind of grease you used, I recommend silicone grease since petroleum based grease can cause plastic and rubber components to swell. I would check how the rubber ball or lever fits into the selector lever it should not be tight. Other than that I'm sure you have lubricated the cups on the front and rear selector rods and the shift rod assembly. If I think of anything else I will post it, taking things apart and looking for resistance in sub assemblies will help with diagnosis. It is rather hard to diagnose these things from a distance, however I will do my best.

I started doing the process of elimination, the bushing that came pre-installed in the front bracket was too tight. Going to sand it al little to allow freer movement on the long rod. The older kits, this bushing used to be too loose, looks like this was the “fix” out there.

Nice job on the video with details and explanation/insight. Ive never tried a weighted shift rod so may try a backyard diy.Where are you sourcing old school, good quality Febi Bilstein strut mounts? Have you done the 3M window weld fill trick?

Thank you for watching and commenting, I have not tried reinforcing the mounts with windshield adhesive but I am tempted. Especially for the VR6 cabby which has alot of factors working against it. Your Callaway rabbit GTI is such a lovely vehicle!
I bought my Febi Bilstein mounts from a local shop near me called Eurowrench. I have found them at 2 sites (not sure if they are in stock)

That manual showing the shifter linkage assembly, is that a Bentley manual? I’m ready to do my ‘92 Cabby, adding a short shifter and weighted rod. All Techtonics brand

Hey Nigel wanted to ask about re mapping your gears to the correct gears with the shift handle and on the linkage I just recently purchased a MK3 Jetta with a 2.0 aba motor but the shifter assembly is the absolute same as this one just wanted to know how to get the shifter to read each gear correctly

Hi there, It is very similar to the mk1 and 2 since as you know they all use variations of the 020 transmission. I have not adjusted this specific item on a mk3. My Mk3 Bentley indicates that VW special tool 3104 is required to adjust the shift lever in the neutral position with the transmission in neutral as well. The only thing I can recommend is the Mk1 alignment procedure which entails taking basic measurements, which do not apply here because of the different parts between generations, then shifting between 1 and reverse since the lock out that you push the shift knob down to access reverse is what you are aligning the mechanism for. An inadvertent misalignment that does not lock out reverse is a problem that I have run into on an older Mk2 GTI with worn parts that were the cause of the problem. I do not recommend trying to realign worn parts, so replace those first, look for witness marks on the spline of the selector rod from the selector lever. It is really hard for me to verbalize what is required and diagnose issues when I am not able to inspect the parts and be physically present to elaborate on all the things I have inevitably missed when not doing the procedure in person sorry.
