I was trained by all of the famous studio tape recorder manufacturers. And became the Quality Control Manager for one of the most famous by the name of Scully. And so I'm really into tape recorders. As you might imagine.
This is absolutely a fabulous device! If I had seen it in the past? It's when I was a child and didn't know what I was looking at. This is fabulous! And I realized something here very important..
This like a professional recorder. It is driven by a capstan and pinch roller. Powered by the spindle of the turntable. With your choice of speeds of 3.75 IPS. When the turntable is set to 33 1/3. 7.5 IPS when the turntable is set to 45 RPM. And the studio speed of 15 IPS when the turntable is set to 78 RPM.
And so in theory. With the circumference of the capstan based upon the rotations per minute of the turntable platter. Provided for a stable and standardized, tape recorder speeds of that era. Of the early 1950s. Still the same speeds used today.
I actually considered a more modern version of this. At the turn of the new millennium into 2000.
It would have been a box you would have added.. To an existing analog tape recorder. It would in turn digitize the incoming audio. Into a lower bit rate, MP3,, digital audio datastream. This in turn. Would have been able to modify an analog tape recorder. Into a reel to reel, real-time,, MP3, digital audio recorder. From an analog recorder. To update an older machine from the 50s-60s-70s. Into a usable digital recorder from an analog recorder. Without modifying the analog recorder. By simply plugging in a box.
Because remember. Early home computers. That did not have hard drives yet. Backed up all of their digital data. Onto an inexpensive, child's, portable, battery-operated, toy, cassette recorder. To backup your data. Using FSK or Frequency Shift Keying. With a recorder running at 1.78 IPS. But you can record a lot more data. At higher bit rates and greater frequency response capabilities. If the tape is being pulled at 7.5 IPS or 15 IPS. In a similar manner of data encryption converted to an analog signal. And then played back in the same manner.
It's amazing. That some old person must of had this in their attic. And when they died. It was discovered.. Having sat there since the 1950s. That's an amazing find! That it was not relegated to a landfill decades ago. A true piece of unique recording history! I sure wish I had one. I have a much better turntable. It's DC servo controlled and driven. And my recordings could sound just as crappy only better.
I do love the funny permanent magnet, erasing head. That's very cute and funny. That adds so much noise to the tape it's criminal. But many of us have those. Especially when I was seven years old and purchased my first $20 3 inch reels to reel, portable recorder when I was 7 years old. And it had a permanent magnet erase head thingy. And the noise was wholly objectionable.
But I believe this thing could actually make it reasonable recording. By using a slightly different technique.
This technique. Requires one to get a large electromagnet. That we commonly referred to as a bulk tape eraser. And you put the reel on it and spend it with your fingers a couple of times. And when you take it off slowly.. As you continue to rotate the reel with your hands. It will do a very clean erase job.. Then!
You would thread your tape. As if you were going to play back something. By not putting it over the permanent magnet erasing device that will induce a terrible amount of noise. And instead. You just record over this completely clean tape. And you could probably get a reasonably good recording without the extra noise added by the permanent magnet erasing thingy head.
But without the bulk tape eraser. You wouldn't be able to do that and would have to rely upon that permanent magnet that induces all that noise. Unless you are using clean fresh tape that has never been recorded upon on a single pass. Of say, a recording of your 95-year-old grandmother's birthday. Where the quality would not be crucial. In its fidelity.
I didn't particularly love the plastic finger controlled rewinding device. What? They never bothered to figure out. All you had to do was flip the reels. Not threading it past the heads. Just turn the turntable on. And you would have automatic rewind. Then you switch the reels back again. And you're ready to record. Without hurting your index finger from the plastic gizmo. After rewinding 1200 feet of tape! Who would want to do that to their finger??? It's fine if you just want to back it up a few sentences or one minute. Not good if you wanted to back it up one half hour. It'll take your figure 15 minutes to do that. And then you will be dripping blood all over the tape. So that didn't make any sense without making it fur lined first. So at least it would feel good around your finger and would tickle. It could also effectively be used on a clitoris also. And then it would have dual purpose. You could screw a tape. Or you could screw it around your girlfriends clitoris. Where your love life could spin out of control. Faster honey faster! Make it go faster! I'm screwing as fast as I can honey! Oh... Oh I think we are reaching Nirvana. After Black Sabbath. Keep screwing! We are almost there! Don't stop! Don't stop. Till I get enough.. Of that Funky stuff. Yeah baby!
So you have to learn how to use this equipment properly! They didn't include all of the directions. This is what actual engineers like me, understand. It's not only a tape recorder. It's also a sample loop playback device. The first one of its kind! And a marriage saver. This was pure genius! It's both a recorder and a sexual aid device in one! That was a visionary inventor if there ever was one. And there wasn't. Because they never sold and that the adult bookstores. They didn't have the proper marketing tactics. This is why you need a PR firm and an advertising agency. Along with some proper technical research. To truly discover the value of this device. That would allow you to make recordings. And improve your marriage at the same time! It was plainly an active genius and desperation. Because he didn't introduce it until after his wife divorced him. For making love to the machine more than her. It's always like that. Alexander Graham Bell ended up talking to himself on the phone. Tommy Edison recited Mary had a Little Lamb to himself. For dinner or for sex? And Nikola Tesla was into Bondage & Discharge. All of these guys obviously had some kind of sexual kink to themselves. You could tell they wanted to get off on what they were doing. And they were relentless. They were suffering from CID. Compulsive Inventive Disorder. And all to just get a charge out of what they were doing. Because their batteries had gone flat. And limp.
I talked to my computer now. Because it's the only person that'll listen to me. And is a great secretary. Because it writes down everything I say. I can even place it in my lap. Atop my lap.
I once made a tape recorder run backwards. When the reels should just have been going around in circles. I think I scared it?
The best thing about a tape recorder. It makes it easy to erase your past.
    RemyRAD

In a lot of ways, this is a way better solution for looping tape. Less bulky than a traditional tape machine and everything is out in the open. And it can be driven by anything that spins. Next idea: Hook it up to other spinning things. Tape Bike. Tape Car. etc.

      @nicholasroos3627 3 года назад

@@stuartchapman5171 I think you confuse ones own appetite with that of others. There is also something not so obsolete about belts and idlers. Even remolding rubber on pinch rollers is being done. Heads are the problem only if working with obscure units such as this one. Otherwise, why wouldn't replacements be available from dead units of yesteryear? People are smart enough to grab them and sell them at a price. Let's not try to let collectors and hoarding hifi reseller types convince us otherwise.

Oh! I just also realized. This is the first recorder ever. That was literally design. To be able to do multitrack recording via sound on sound layering. By not looping the tape over the erase magnet. You can record on top of other things that are already on the tape. You just can't hear it while you're doing I don't think? But still.. This would predate Les Paul and Mary Ford maybe? And he could've done that so much more economically with this. That he didn't need an expensive specially built Ampex 8 track of the first kind.. This is truly revolutionary! Sound on sound recordings in the 1950s without spending a fortune.
I sure wish the 1950s would come back. I liked life better as an immature child. Because Santa Claus was still alive.
    RemyRAD
    PS
Not sure if you found him as Santa Claus in your phonebook? He could have been listed as Chris Kriegel or, S. Nick. And was still alive in the 1950s. I saw him kissing mommy under the Christmas tree. And I'm Jewish.

If it was me I would have bought a good used unit before I had bought that thing even if I had to pay twice as much. Here in the states we have a term called a Rube Goldberg machine. Look it up.
