- This video is the first part of a historic debate between Lynn Margulis (responsible for the rediscovery of symbiogenesis as the orgin of mitochondria and plastids) and Richard Dawkins (author of The Selfish Gene). The debate was chaired by Denis Noble and recorded by Voices from Oxford.

Prof. Denis Noble, I believe you deserve recognition for all of your work towards human understanding of life. I have also noticed, that through out all your lectures you keep your composure well.

I know a bit about biology and have worked with ESCRTs myself. The notion that they originated as archaea division mechanisms is MIND BLOWING TO EVEN A SCIENTIST LIKE ME. That specific idea does something to my brain, it makes so much sense and provides such a nice track to keep thinking along, what else must be true. Thank you from this random internet user.

Its nice to see Dawkins plugging away, its better to believe in something than nothing at all. I agree with him that evolution must operate on information, as this is eternal. The question is were does this data reside. His insistence that it is contained solely in the gene is looking old.
