Seriously - I wish someone would play this for their band director or corps director and then ask, "Can we please perform this? Please???" Anyone who gets a serious yes - please tell your director to post a private message via my channel. I love this piece too much to only have it exist inside a computer. It needs to get exposed to some fresh air!!!!!
Your "Rise of the Triad" soundtrack is really good - I started off remembering "Run Like Smeg", listening to it, then thinking I should work up the saxophone solo, then it was followed by this amazing track, which now has me wanting to notate it for my own amateur dance band (we can always use more latin tunes). I'm just not sure I can pull off the flute solo, but that trombone solo is awesome.
Im sure youre aware by now but your dinky little tunes have reached far more than a thousand hits and will continue to be loved for generations to come. seriously great work
These, definitely, and also Shadow Warrior. I think back to that magical christmas as a teen when my dad got me that game; at first I didn't know what it was, then I saw it was something along the lines of Duke 3D which dad knew I liked, so I installed it, started it up, and... well, the experience was memorable to say the least. Lot of nostalgia, and some really great music throughout that marathon of oldschool ninja shootouts and demon blasting. The city streets, howling winds, dark clouds, sacred halls and deadly showdowns are all there, in music, in memory. Thank you. =)
It's really me, but in this case I was not inspired by any outside influence. You see, the song is an arrangement of an Adagio for Strings and Organ, attributed to Tomaso Albinoni but possibly written by someone else. Search Wikipedia for Adagio in G Minor and read the accompanying article - in fact, the article says A Feast of Friends was influenced by the original Adagio (regardless of who actually wrote the thing). BTW, I was unaware of any controversy when I did my arrangement.
Claude Bolling's "Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano," with Jean-Pierre Rampal on flute, was an influence. Don Sebesky's "The Contemporary Arranger" talks a bit about using flute in a jazz context, and even Jimmy Buffet's "Margaritaville" gave me one or two ideas. A group out of Austin called Beto y los Fairlanes was one of my influences for the overall style, as were several Drum & Bugle Corps of the day who played "Tiger of San Pedro."

You, sir, are practically a god in my eyes. The music from the original Rise of the Triad is, without the slightest doubt, the most incredible music in any video game I've ever played, heard of, or eaten. It's no small part of the reason why I adore that game to this day. I wish I had a quarter of your talent as a composer. Every last track in the game is fantastic. So thank you, sir, for taking an already-great video game and making it truly memorable in every way.
I don't know...I used to bring my wife (future wife at the time) to tears when I tried to tutor her through our music theory classes at UT Austin. I don't think teaching composition is in the stars for me. Ask my son, though - he's getting close to graduating UT Arlington with intent to possibly teach music composition...either that, or to build violins and guitars.. o_O
Seeing this performed live by a full band would be the dream concert. After all these years you're still the best in the biz, Mr. Jackson! Never been topped!
This tune brings me back to my youth, RoTT was one of my favorite games growing up. Your music in RoTT (and Duke3d) have always been among my favorite pieces of MIDI music! Awesome to find this version here on your own private RUclips channel! Thanks for the music and the memories good sir!
I'm ashamed to admit it took me the length of the entire song to figure out how that hand position even made sense, then I realized it wasn't his lmao. most amazing work, Mr. Jackson.
@@LeeJacksonAudio oh my god you actually replied. you're an actual legend. thanks for the amazing work over the years, sir. you were behind some (a lot) of the best tunes to come out of the FPS genre back in the day. of course you don't need me telling you that. wishing you and miss Jackson the best all the way from Peru.
Your music is one of the reasons I love the original ROTT so much. The music definitely stood out in that era and still holds up over two decades later.
I honestly don't know the name of the genre. It's in 6/8, which breaks down after the intro into the equivalent of alternating measure pairs of 6/8 and 3/4. I don't know the term for this style, other than it would be a big band style. As for writing it, I just got into the grove and went with it. Sorry - wish I could help more.
Hi Lee, I wanted to you to know this is one of my favorite songs. My dad bought me ROTT back in the mid-90s for my birthday and I have been enthralled by the music ever since. I still have a SC-55 on my desk just to listen to ROTT midis (and sometimes messing with a DAW). Thanks for making awesome music!
Lee Jackson and Bobby Prince are both brilliant Composers their music should be played by orchestras around the world only then ..once exposed to the wider public people will understand the level of their genius
Now this brings back memories. Countless hours spent in a pixelated world, exploding stuff, shooting people, listening to great music, enjoying oneself. Thank you for the music. :)
Amazing! I used to listen to ROTT music for hours on end back in the '90s. Mr. Jackson, you and Bobby Prince basically wrote the soundtrack for my childhood. :D
No, I'm sad to say. That is one of my "bucket list" items, the most-wished-for variant of would be for a drum & bugle corps to play it. Anyone here have a contact who works with the Crossmen in San Antonio, maybe? ^_^;
Excellent remaster. I love your work Mr. Jackson, I remember I use to listen to your grabbag theme when I was having a bad day and use to cheer me up. I also heard a song called Superfnord that I found on RUclips, I really like that one too. The whole soundtrack to ROTT is a masterpiece. Thanks for the music man :)
Man, those were the days! I remember the first time I played ROTT and getting to a boss stage for the first time. I always felt that this tune was the perfect buildup to a vicious boss battle (although I think "vicious" hardly describes the NME... *shudder*)
You are a brilliant composer and I love all of your work with Apogee/3DRealms; RoTT is one of my favorite soundtracks. Wishing you the best of wellness with your health and hope you remain strong!
This is the one I would fire up the music cheat code and listen to on repeat for so long, 25 years ago. This version sounds absolutely epic, thanks so much for sharing!
Erm...that's kind of already been done for me. Do a search for any of the songs by Bobby or myself, and someone has probably already either uploaded it or done a cover version of it.
Why would that be bad? I still listen to them. I just wish I had my Gravis Ultrasound MAX rig still set up so I could hear them like I wrote them. ^_^ There's a question for you - is a Virtual GUS MAX available online? I know about Timidity++, but there's too much configuration involved there to get it sounding like the original.
So awesome, Lee! I loved playing RoTT when I was a kid (though I was probably a bit too young to be playing it when it came out). The music was so cool! I am a young composer, and one day, I would love to score for video games. Every time I listen to awesome game music like this, I wanna do it more.
A great track from an era where one guy with a good keyboard, talent, and imagination could produce some of the best music I could ever hope to grow up with as a kid. Thanks for sharing this, and fueling my appreciation for good music when I was just an impressionable kid(yes, I played ROTT when I was pretty young; used to play Comm-bat matches with my dad's coworkers at the development studio he worked for at the time :D )
Well... i like the work of both of you, but for me, YOU R THE MAN! Ive once played the ROTT Shareware up to Level 7 just to hear OWW!!! In 1997 i even recorded the output of the soundcard into its mic input while playing the OWW!!! and burned it on Audio Cd and while listening to it i was doing pushups and dumbbell workout.

I'll run it by my band - we're a big band that does primarily dances, but this might help fill out our Latin repertoire.

A reworking of Havana Smooth that I did a few years ago. Enjoy.
