I Choose the Stairs Answering Machine Message - id Software
Hey Lee Jackson. I just want to thank you for working on some of the most important games of my childhood, even if some (like duke3d) were probably too old for me at the time. This track sticks with me because it's the default music for custom levels and many players never bothered to change the track... myself included if I recall correctly. It did allow me to grow up, appreciating these games more and more as I understood more and more about both life and the references made within the games. Along with this, I've sought out the music and have remastered midis on my phone. My dad always had good PCs growing up, so I got to experience Doom, Duke3D, Shadow Warrior, all with a good quality Soundblaster card. These soundtracks blow me away, even still. I hope one day I can afford attend a con and see you and squeal like a schoolgirl about it.
Superb, someone mod this into Rise of the Triad, stat!
I need this extended. The better version imo.
Tito Puente interjection. 1:40
So smooth!
Sounds great!
This is great. Flavorful composition and nice voicings and use of sounds.
I doubt Lee's gonna see this, but i oughta wonder what he thinks of Hulahult's version of this song.
Hulahult hahahahah
Was Golden Brown by The Stranglers an influence for this track or is it just a familiar leitmotif?
I'm afraid I don't know that song, sorry.
Amazing!
It would be great to learn about the "decisions" behind each of these tracks, like how you begin to build the composition up. Foe example, where do the melodies, harmony, instrumentation, and overall mood come from; is it a lot of trial and error and then finding the perfect combinations or utilizing "tools" provided by music theory, genres, and other composers, knowing that "ok, this and this always work"? For example, in this Stalker case, the thought process could have been "Ok, I'd like to create a really menacing tune, and using a Phrygian mode instead of the regular minor does that."
Damn, I'm looking classy.
"I choose the stairs, dumbass!" 🤣
Banger
Also, Mr. Jackson, if you’re reading these still. I bought the ROTT remake and was very very disappointed by the outright butchering of your work. Playing ROTT on christmas eve is one of my first and best gaming memories.
Nice stuff!
Is there a name for one of the other cut songs also used in the early 1997 prototypes? It was being used for E1L5.
Badass, very enjoyable. Facebook is kinda outmoded, hope you have other options, blogs to see backstories.
Yep, got a website. dleejackson.lbjackson.com
As good as this is, it just doesn't match Owww!
Glad to see you're still active.
A lovely arrangement!
What a lovely brass delight! And it moves from one section to the next so effortlessly, while going through variations of its uplifting fanfarey mood. Extremely enjoyable, and really lets the ear and mind focus on all its separate qualities, while everything still plays together perfectly.
To my humble guess from the music i bet duke nukem at some point of duke nukem forever were suppose to end up inside alien base perhaps their homeworld planets since i remember the dlc dr who clone me he fight the alien empress queen if i not wrong in the moon. but if he was at their planets would have been cool..and what i like about this music ambience is it remind me what use to be a good old alien movie from the year of 50s 60s 70s 80s year with the old sound effect and old design.
I keep returning to listen to this it's so good.
Just amazing. Hearing it properly is so awesome. You're right, this piece is just too good to only have it exist inside a computer.
Man this sounds like an eastern arrangement of the Terminator 2 theme, mixed with some RoTT sound somehow. Kickass. Thank you for this. Would have played the heck out of it back in the day if it made it in.
Thanks! Sounds different even just by the fact it's not being played through an AdLib. Cool look at a different take.
0:40 Oh I was so yearning for a D resolution! LOL!
Straight up fyre!
Very enjoyable piece. Are you influenced by Percy Grainger and/or the English Pastoralist School?
Well, I wouldn't know from English Pastoralists (never studied them), but I did perform a *lot* of Percy Grainger back with my high school and with the bands of the University of Texas at Austin.
Beautiful!
Thank you!
Not really well-versed in Classical Music, but damn this is fire. I am ASSUMING you simply just took the original sheet and played it with high quality instruments, and if that is the case, thank you, as this is actually a banger and now I can listen to this in Super-Duper-4K-Surround-Sound-Dolby-Atmos Quality without no stinking audience gawking in awe and clapping.
That's not exactly what I did, I have to say. :) While some bits here and there are straight 1-to-1 transcriptions from the original orchestral score to my band arrangement, a good deal of it had to be massaged and manipulated to get the final product. For example, I had to figure out what to do with the entire string section (except for the Double Bass, and even then I had to reinforce it!), since there are no violins, violas, or cellos in your standard band. Stuff like that. 😊
Nice writing ❤
Thank you!
Love this.
Thank you!
I want a midi version please
Seconding myself.
Me too.
Somebody needs to write a city building game to accompany this music
Lee I’m wondering if u got any pushback back in the day from ‘purists’ regarding making midi music? It’s so iconic today but I wonder if it’s something people didn’t understand when it came out
No, thankfully, I never got that. The public was past that once I got my start, I think.
@@LeeJacksonAudio cool thanks so much for the reply
Awesome!
damn this hits different thanks for giving us this masterpiece Mr. Jackson
hell yeah! definitely not what i was expecting from the man behind Goin' Down The Fast Way but a welcome surprise nonetheless
Very nice piece, Mr. Jackson! How did the contest go?
Unfortunately, I didn't win or get the honorable mention prize. I'm still happy with the way the song turned out, though, thanks to the members of my Composition Critique e-mail list. Drop me a line at dleejackson.lbjackson.com/contact/ if you'd like to join the Competition Critique list and help me out!
This is just amazing.
This is one of the best midi songs ever created.
I feel like lee Jackson is the mick Gordon of his time and genre. The music he created was so incredibly it almost outshines the games they are in. The fact that almost 30 years later that his music is revered as some of the best midi music ever made is an accomplishment anyone should be proud of.
Seeing this performed live by a full band would be the dream concert. After all these years you're still the best in the biz, Mr. Jackson! Never been topped!
i wonder if i can convince my school to let me play this-
don't, you don't want to attract the triad enforcer choir
This is the one I would fire up the music cheat code and listen to on repeat for so long, 25 years ago. This version sounds absolutely epic, thanks so much for sharing!
