If you'll notice almost all of these "trapped under a boulder" stories happen in a creek bed- wet or dry. The water washes the support out from under these rocks and leaves them just barely standing the way they are- then some poor hiker or angler comes along and puts a little weight on it and that's all it takes- the rock shifts and often traps them in the process. The rock doesn't have to be in the creek bed either- just close by is good enough, when it floods the water reaches them and it might take a thousand floods but eventually erosion unbalances them. Another environment you'll often see it in are in places where it gets really cold at night and the water in the cracks of the rocks freezes and expands- eventually it will crack the rock and it may crack off a huge slab several tons in weight that's just sitting there precariously balanced and then soemone tries to climb it and- problems. Climbing boulders has been becoming more popular lately for some reason- it's so dangerous. Lots of boulders that look very unbalanced are solid but, not all of them.

Of course, as usual, when Dean frantically screamed and waved at the hovering aircraft overhead, the pilots didnt see him and he remained in his precarious wilderness situation for another three weeks surviving on mere rations of minnows and ice water!

Id the air bag would not failed, why would amputation of part of the foot be an option? Then control the bleeding and get to a hospital. He already had to go to a hospital anyway. Better to lose a foot then be dead.
I read of the true story of a man whose hand was trapped under a rock and finally in desperation , no-one would find him he amputated it with a knife. He survived.
We all hope for a miracle in life when things are unbearable. This encourages me to keep going in my hour of need.
