I was 15, just retired this year, seems like yesterday.....I wish we listened to the 'old fogies' back then that told us time flies. We thought we'd be young forever, bullet proof, no fear. Now, we're the 'old fogies' and I tell the young kids to live life, squeeze the juice out of it, because it really is gone in the blink of an eye. We get busy living life and forget to live life. Thanks JB.
I also started listening to this song in the '70s. I still have the album. I have always very much liked the song but always found the lyrics chilling because of "They say, in the end it's the wink of an eye" and "I'm going to be a happy idiot And struggle for the legal tender". I have frequently offered the same sentiment to my senior prom date (now wife), then today I see my name (minus 1 letter) speak of the same realization ( I also just retired). Thank you for posting John Eas_on
I’m… speechless, with the salty taste of my own tears. I’m 55 now, and was so young when I first heard this song; completely unaware of how much depth and complex meaning is within those lyrics. But today, it hit smack in the middle of my soul. Timeless, and even more beautiful today than it ever was. Thank you Jackson, for your incredible talent and musical gifts that you have shared with us all. 🙏 Much love and gratitude to you from me. ❤️

Wow! Decades after first hearing this it still gives goosebumps. ‘Are You there for the pretender?’. Short answer - yes. At the end of the day we are all pretenders, all doing the best we can, which grace assures is sufficient. Thanks JB for all the years of wisdom and melody.
Time goes by faster the older you get. Life is short. Go have fun. Go do that thing you always wanted to go do but never set time aside for. I’ve always wanted to go to Europe and experience it. Im going this summer.
Hey you!...was at Blossom in Cleveland, last weekend! You sound better than ever!!! Thank you for gracing our stage and giving yourself to us again and again! Miss you so much and love you, your soulful voice, words and everything about you and your music!!! Thank you for blessing us with your presence, brilliance, and beautiful voice! You are like no other, and I have loved you since I first heard you , in the early 70's!!....
I think it’s amazing how this tune hits home with those of us who are 50 ish/ 60is. It’s incredible how Jackson when he wrote this understood what ultimately happens. It also blows my mind of how he says he doesn’t have chops (way Humble) His voice is one of my all time favorites. There’s none out there that sound like Jackson.
His music resonates and appeals to me, in my early twenties. Music just doesn’t have the same depth and meaning these days, so I’ve had to search songs from the days long gone by. It’s beautiful
I have listened to this song my entire life and I still love to sing along blasting on the radio. One of my favorites for sure. Your awesome Mr. Browne!!
The Pretender and the 1 just listened to, These Days, are my absolute 2 favorite Jackson Browne songs!! Am a baby boomer hippy who grew up in the 70s! My only regret is I never got to see Jackson Browne Live! Still a big fan still listening to his oldies & absolute goodies! Tk you, Mr Browne, for such terrific + meaningful music. And you still sound exactly the same. Bravo!

We were all so young once. This amazing man has been writing songs that touch my soul for almost 50 years. Thank you Sir, for inspiring an entire generation of musicians. Your contributions to the music world will never fade.
I have listened to this amazing song for the last 30 years. I think I’ve finally decided to pack my lunch in the morning and leave this toxic mess of a girlfriend I’ve settled on. Or she settled on me ? Whichever. Either way I have two amazing young sons who have grown up and love their dad . First heard this song in the early 80's living in sunny South Africa. I'm now in my 60's and Jackson sounds unbelievable and the song still resonates with me after all these years. Keeping rocking Mr Browne.
I have told my wife to play this song at my funeral. These are the most honest words I have ever heard. We all try our best to be sincere but when all is said and done, let’s here it for the Pretender.
It is a special musician that can sing and play a song with no accompaniment and sound that wonderful... Thank you, Jackson, for all the years of great music.
Words cannot describe the feeling I get from this song. Absolutely gorgeous version of a true classic. Keep on keeping on Jackson - much love from Wales 🏴
I saw you live in Tokyo 1980,81?when i was 15,16years old ,that was my very first encounter to concert westean music. You sang that song,,I don't know why your songs touched my heart. Your voices not change, since I was boy You still one of my favarite musician. American nice music. Jackson Browne.
Jackson is one of the great song writers you can come back to after what seems a lifetime. And his words are still just as meaningful. Thank you Jackson. A mark of a truly great song writer.
💜 Jackson Browne, my first concert in Rochester, NY (had to go with my Mom). Happy Mother's Day to all the Mom's that grew up on insightful Jackson Browne music. Thanks for a lifetime of sharing your fabulous tunes, they mean more to me than you'll ever know.
I've never seen a photo on an album cover represent a song better than The Pretender. You say you don't have a great understanding of music theory...your music says otherwise. I'm one of the happy idiots out here with a great love and respect for you and your music! xo
Mesmerizing. Considering Jackson Browne's monumental successes, he remains so humble and greatful to be in the presence of other talented music professionals.
Always loved this song, been a Jackson Fan since "Saturate..." The gravity of this song, once so spirited is now heavier, aged by life. And as he's written: "...and they say in the end, it's a blink of an eye..." from my experience as a 70-year old boomer the phrase resonates and breaks my heart. Love you JB.
I just floated back to my age of awe and youth, the 70’s… I’m now at the age to truly appreciate and actually own, your beautiful lyrics, as my own, as the Pretender I was, I am, and forever will be. Thank you Jackson. I’ve turned to your work, my entire life. You are me, I am you… That’s deep man…. Keep on playing us boomers into the tomorrow days, and years… Much love and light to you @JacksonBrowne
Jackson you make me wanna cry. Ive always been so touched by your voice and music. As a teen, Running On Empty, I took the natural ability to write emotional music. You are a role model to me. Touched deeply always when I hear you sing. This is another favorite. But I love them all. Blessings Brother.
"Caught between the longing for love and the struggle for the legal tender ... " ... just a year younger than Jackson .. his music has always been a part of my life and consciousness. All I can say is that it is not life that is short. Life is long. It is youth that is short, much much too short. And old age just goes on and on, how cruel ... because we remember so so clearly that sweet short youth. "Are you there ? Say a prayer for the pretender. Who started out so young and tender ... "
Back in 2004 I saw Jackson at London Palladium. One voice, one piano/guitar. Spellbinding arrangements that really showed off the quality of songwriting. Along with Townes Van Zandt , Gordon Lightfoot and Richard Ashcroft,he is in the upper echelon of all time great songwriters. Thank you for the magic Jackson.
Was 20 when I heard 'running on empty'... many years later, and through all his albums, he's still the one who touches my soul; notwithstanding my childhood memories! I wish him and his loved ones a long and productive life, telling the stories of you and me!
breaks my heart to see how life is short , and it includes everybody... even such a great performer.. then i look to my mirror and my heart breaks again
This song was my life… My family celebrated Jackson Browne for years… Sunday morning for us was Jackson Browne waffles and music. The tradition continues with my grandkids. Jackson Browne continues to touch my soul…
As of now there are 46 people that somehow disliked this. I would venture to say they dislike life itself. Please say a prayer for them and the pretender.
Maybe they have trouble compartmentalizing the difference between the talented singer-songwriter and the man who used to beat up his girlfriend for fun.
Well, at least RUclips removed the Dislike counts, so you can continue the fantasy that the entire world agrees with you, your tastes, your preferences and opinions....I wish we could all be more like you.... :)
I discovered Jackson Browne in 1983 after listening to ‘Hold Out’ and went on to acquire many of his works. I have very pleasant memories listening songs by this wonderful and talented musician.
Song for a (my) generation as we were going out into the world after the 60's ended. And now all these years later, the song more than retains its beauty and its relevance. Thank you Jackson.
He tells a great story about playing Take it Easy at a club. Someone came up to him and told him he played the Eagles song really well. Not many people know he wrote the song and helped the Eagles put it together.
Jackson Browne had the Unfinished Version of Take It Easy. He was stuck a mental block. While Traveling with the Eagles he Shared with Glen Frey what he had Frey loved it but Jackson shelved the unfinished song. Frey would bug Jackson. Did you finish it often. Then Frey offered to help. Jackson reluctantly agreed. Frey added ?"Its a girl my Lord in a Flatbed Ford slowen down to look at me. Now completed he Gave Frey acknowledgement on allowing Eagles also to perform it
Same thing with Randy's Take it to the limit, I read Glenn or Don H. finished or added some lyrics to it? Care to share your insights into this, guys? Much thanks.
I was introduced to Jackson Browne's music on my first road trip from Ohio to Colorado in the 70's. It became a playlist throughout my life. No better singer-songwriter out there.
My mother listened to the Jackson Browne For Everyman album nonstop when I was a teenager and I've been Huge fan since. I'm 61 years old and Jackson Browne is among my favorite singer/song writers along with Don Henley, Glenn Frey and Peter Cetera. On my bucket list... To see Jackson Browne in concert.
Thanks Jackson. People are suffering from COVID-19 right now, but we can feel happy that you are bringing your wonderful voice to people all over the world through RUclips. When COVID-19 disappears from the world someday, I hope you will come back on your world tour and bring us your wonderful voice.

I was sixteen in 1974 when I tuned my radio in to my favorite Boston radio station. I heard a song that in many ways shaped my life moving forward. Fountain of Sorrow got me started as a young writer. Over the years there has been one constant: attend as many Jackson Browne concerts as possible. It’s been a pleasure listening to you and your work through the years. I’m 63 now, and though I left Boston long ago, I, my wife and our kids hope to see you at Blossom in Ohio this summer.
You probably remember Dick Summers and Tom Rush? It was listening to Tom on Summers Sunday night radio show where I first heard a JB song, covered by Tom, as I recall. That was probably 1968?
The first time I heard Jackson Browne I was on my way home in my VW. I think it was Doctor my Eyes or Jamaica. 1972 just finished nursing school and had finished my shift. I thought this is someone I am going to like. I'm now 71 and still love his music.
He and Glenn Frey used to share an apartment when they were starting out and he's friends with The Eagles and Bob Seger, all musical geniuses and favourites of mine.

Wow! Decades after first hearing this it still gives goosebumps. ‘Are You there for the pretender?’. Short answer - yes. At the end of the day we are all pretenders, all doing the best we can, which grace assures is sufficient. Thanks JB for all the years of wisdom and melody.
No pretender here, just faking it
Brought tears to my eyes. The man is a gift.
Time goes by faster the older you get. Life is short. Go have fun. Go do that thing you always wanted to go do but never set time aside for. I’ve always wanted to go to Europe and experience it. Im going this summer.
How deeply moving and brilliant. Jackson sounds richer and fuller than ever; his delivery is truly something fine.
I discovered this man over 30 years ago. His voice sounds like home. Such yearning. ❤️
His voice is home.
40 years have rolled on by and this is as good as it gets
@Clyde Jackson Browne you are welcome, I say you play many years ago, you did a great show. Thanks
Tv 6th
70s music was the best. I was in my 20s. I can enjoy other decades music…but the poetry and storytelling of that decade’s artists…something special.
Jackson's integrity as a musician makes for magic.
Integrity as a PERSON makes for magic.
Hope you don't mind I fixed that for ya 😉
He's one of the best, for sure.
Yep!
Wasn't he beating up on Daryl Hannah?
Still A Great Vocalist
Ah Jackson, how many times has someone said to you, "I love your music, voice, words, light, and soul." I'm just one more. Again.
Amen
I'm an 80s baby and he in my opinion is the greatest singer song writer of all time. Brilliance.
I am a 40`s baby and feel exactly the same !
Jackson is music of peace, that's what all of us need more amid the rise of division. All you need is love
So wonderful. His voice is still the same 40+ years later. Nice.
Bravo!
@@row_sea Not too late to see JB live! I started in 2016 & have seen him 5x since then. Those 2 songs are among my favorite songs of all time, Too!
You rock!!! I have never seen u in concert but hopefully I will........
@@row_sea He does! Exactly the same!!!
His music, his lyrics, all of it's made me think for myself, and actually think about who I am and what I want to be/do/study/
and what I from life for me
You are 60 plus = you should live many more years as a MUCH MORE WI❤SE person
Only Jackson Brown could fit so much social and economic commentary into a personal story about life.
I've loved Jackson since the 70's. What a beautiful voice and lyrics.
This song tells me , there is a girl …poor as me lol but will love me and together we will build a relationship my boys will want to have in their own life. Thank you Jackson
First heard this song in the early 80's living in sunny South Africa. I'm now in my 60's and Jackson sounds unbelievable and the song still resonates with me after all these years. Keeping rocking Mr Browne.
I love this man's music him...love you Jackson 😍
I live in South Africa 🇿🇦 and he has always been my best

Wow, I think his voice is even better now than when he recorded this song 🎶
Agree! Unmistakable
Disagree......but age stalks us all, so diminished skill is expected from us all. Def a crisper version in the 70s. :)
@@comptroubky Crisper, yes, but now with an endearing character, similar to other aging greats... Gordon Lightfoot, Willie Nelson, Dennis DeYoung...
in comparison to many other artists that lost their voice with the years passing, JB still sounds amazing.
@@comptroubky crisper is not always better tho
He has aged gracefully, but his voice is still pure and touches my soul. Thank you sir for all the gifts you have given so many.
I have told my wife to play this song at my funeral. These are the most honest words I have ever heard. We all try our best to be sincere but when all is said and done, let’s here it for the Pretender.
I could not agree more.
it's in my will to play everybody's talkin' that does it for me
It's on my good bye play list also....
This is national treasure. Please remember, you belong to us all. A whole generation
He’ll end up belonging to 5 generations.🥃
It is a special musician that can sing and play a song with no accompaniment and sound that wonderful... Thank you, Jackson, for all the years of great music.
How many singers still have their voices at his age? Just amazing.
mick jagger
me, singing right along as we speak
I'm 67 and still sing with Jackson
Words cannot describe the feeling I get from this song. Absolutely gorgeous version of a true classic. Keep on keeping on Jackson - much love from Wales 🏴
I saw you live in Tokyo 1980,81?when i was 15,16years old ,that was my very first encounter to concert westean music. You sang that song,,I don't know why your songs touched my heart.
Your voices not change, since I was boy
You still one of my favarite musician.
American nice music. Jackson Browne.
Jackson is one of the great song writers you can come back to after what seems a lifetime. And his words are still just as meaningful.
Thank you Jackson. A mark of a truly great song writer.
His lyrics cause all kinds of images in your mind. What a true genius in music for all of us to hear. Over and over again!
I awoke to find Jackson at 4 AM to start my day. Easier now to get up and do it again. Incredible. Thank you good sir.
4:20... you guys are on Arizona time now... happens every morning around here;;☆》♡♡♡... no worries mate
I've just recovered from the experience this morning 🌄... yee haw
You Awoke to an Awakening ❤️
I've never seen a photo on an album cover represent a song better than The Pretender. You say you don't have a great understanding of music theory...your music says otherwise. I'm one of the happy idiots out here with a great love and respect for you and your music! xo
@Jackson Brownesongs Why would anyone email someone masquerading as Jackson Browne?
@Jackson Brownesongs ...you are a fake account...
“You can send me an email on my private email”.....seriously??? Not so private now?!?! SCAMMERS not so smart these days!
Awesome comment👌 ..…. I Love This Song ❤️. 🙏Thank you Jackson🙏
Me too...Tears of happiness for sure, even today
I have loved this man for so long. And he will never know. He means no much, for so many.
Mesmerizing. Considering Jackson Browne's monumental successes, he remains so humble and greatful to be in the presence of other talented music professionals.
Being humble is a rare trait these days. xx
Thank you, Jackson Browne.
Moving performance of a beautiful song.
I'm glad you were born. You're generous to share your gifts with us. 💕🎶.
He set the bar for so many of us thank you sir much love too you
Thank you Sir, for YEARS of Memories! 💙
I'm right there with you...just turned 70
I'm with you also, but I'm only 65 sorry
I just floated back to my age of awe and youth, the 70’s… I’m now at the age to truly appreciate and actually own, your beautiful lyrics, as my own, as the Pretender I was, I am, and forever will be. Thank you Jackson. I’ve turned to your work, my entire life. You are me, I am you… That’s deep man…. Keep on playing us boomers into the tomorrow days, and years… Much love and light to you @JacksonBrowne
No joke, my favorite song from this generation of songwriters. So powerful I can't listen to it that often lest it break me. Thank you, Jackson.
Jackson you make me wanna cry. Ive always been so touched by your voice and music. As a teen, Running On Empty, I took the natural ability to write emotional music. You are a role model to me. Touched deeply always when I hear you sing. This is another favorite. But I love them all. Blessings Brother.
@Jackson Brownesongs
Jackson, you are an incredible human being! Your music is so meaningful! I love you!!😘😘😘
I Was 13 When Running On Empty Came OUT,! Same time I started Writing Songs ,THANK YOU! JB.!
I’m a Classic Rock DJ...behind the board now. Coming up next...Jackson Browne...this fits neatly into my lineup.
Jackson was crying too. After JFK Jr tuned him up.
🌬🎶🎵🎶🎶🎹
I've loved your music since the first song... Thank you.
Jackson Browne are you kidding! With your talent and God given gift of music you could actually TEACH a class at Berkeley school of music. Bar none!
Very true ! Well said , Mary . Best wishes to you. ;-)
breaks my heart to see how life is short , and it includes everybody... even such a great performer.. then i look to my mirror and my heart breaks again
I can't imagine anyone disliking this....probably some trolls who are into hate whitey no matter what..
I wonder why the people who dislike some kinds of music, never say why they dislike it? Are they afraid of their own opinions?
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Well, at least RUclips removed the Dislike counts, so you can continue the fantasy that the entire world agrees with you, your tastes, your preferences and opinions....I wish we could all be more like you.... :)
Man, this really hits home with me. It did years ago and even more now. One of our best songwriters. Thank you.
This one still brings a tear to my eye all these years & weary roads later. Love it so much‼️
I'm 60 now and this takes me back in time. Thank you Jackson Browne.
Now completed he Gave Frey acknowledgement on allowing Eagles also to perform it
It was so cool going to Winslow, AZ and get pictures with his statue. 😎
Same thing with Randy's Take it to the limit, I read Glenn or Don H. finished or added some lyrics to it? Care to share your insights into this, guys? Much thanks.
Jackson, thank you for giving the world such a gift.
Thank you buddy. 53 years old now and always loved your music. You got me through alot of difficult miles on dark and lonely interstates as an over the road truck driver. Thank you. ❤
So modest, isn't he? I'm sure he could teach at any school of music anywhere. Just one of the greatest voices of his generation.
"Out of the cool of the evening strolls the pretender. He knows that all his hopes and dreams begin and end there." Oh man, thank you.
Nice guy! I was on a crew and he went out of his way. He also was nice to my daughter and her boyfriend backstage at a show. He lives up to the reputation.
You have to humble and have empathy and humility to be able to write such beautiful, emotive songs..... No one other than a kind soul could.......
I met him 44 years ago, he was a nice guy then and I'm sure he still is
I was sixteen in 1974 when I tuned my radio in to my favorite Boston radio station.
Simply Magnificent. Admired JB all my life and frankly this is a masterpiece. He makes his piano sing with himself.
Lol
