Quattro Ultra is not a front wheel biased system as you have mentioned several times. It is a RWD based AWD system with the longitudinal engine layout of the A4 that has the ability to decouple the rear wheels when conditions warrant that. Unlike the Haldex part-time AWD system with transverse engines used in the A3, Ultra can send more than 50% of the torque to the rear wheels, and it does not require prior front wheel slip before power is sent to the rear.

The Audi A4 is a front wheel driven vehicle in the 2.0 TFSI spec without AWD. Just 3 litre engines have the standard 40/60 permanent quattro.
A 2.0 litre Audi A4 quattro is front wheel biased. The quattro ultra system can also decouple the rear wheels, yes. That's also proof enough that the main drive unit are the front wheels. The rear wheels are "also" being used, but not primarily. Like 70 % of the time, the car drives FWD only.

I am glad that Audi still uses a number of analog controls, particularly A/C. I was in an accident in a car with the A/C control in the infotainment screen and not obvious at all. The car hit a patch of cold air, completely fogged the inside and for several seconds was not possible to see anything through the windshield while the driver was trying to find the A/C controls. And then the collision occurred. Everybody was fine but it was quite scary. Definitely analog controls are more intuitive and allow a faster response time by the driver, whereas some changes look nice but can turn out dangerous.

For people who are about to decide on any of these cars. I got a BMW 3 (G21) 2 years ago. The position and seats are less comfortable for people who like to "spread" their legs while driving when compared to A4. This is mainly due to pretty wide and tall console in the beemer. I actually got some medical issues which surfaced while driving the beemer (FAI/torn labrum in right hip). I got rid of it, and now I am driving the A4 where the position is more comfortable for me. They are both excellent cars, but please test drive for extended duration and pay attention to your comfort before you pull the trigger.

i have driven all 3 in the UK here is my verdict:
Mercedes c-class: most comfortable but when I was driving it the car felt like it was comatose and was quite laggy in terms of engine response and the gearbox couldn't really decide what gear it needed it would often get stuck in a lower gear before finally realizing it needs to change up so if you're a driver driver you won't like the c class unless you drive like its always Sunday.
Audi A4 45: not as comfortable as the merc but still quite nice but again same story here the gearbox engine combination just doesn't work here as there is quite a bit of hesitation when changing gears not to mention the A4 had the most turbo lag so it took a few seconds for it to respond to gas pedal being pressed.
BMW 3 series: now this car is the car you buy if you're a driver. the engine and gearbox zf8 speed combination are always so excellently tunned by BMW as the car is always ready to go it felt the most alive out of the 3. No hesitation at all from the gearbox it knows when to change and when to downshift also in sports mode the gearbox likes to hold the gears more often to let the engine rev out which is loads of fun when driving like your wifes about to give birth. Comfort is okay not the best but you don't buy BMW 3 series for comfort. If you want full-on crazy speed and acceleration the m340i is the best in its segment with its lovely 6-cylinder B58.
BMW for the best driving experience but it isn't a car for the people who want their cars to glide over clouds
Mercedes if you want to piss off other drivers by going slow but in style and ultimate comfort
Audi tries to do halfway house with comfort and driving experience but more so leans to comfort

I have the same car. It's awesome, so much fun to drive. I'm still within the run-in period (1100km done) and I have to hold myself back to not really push it to its limit. I do have to say, the engine noise has been dramatically reduced in the LCI when compared to the non-LCI 330e, which I find really strange and a bit disappointing. But that is nitpicking, since there isn't much negative I can otherwise say about this car. Also, what is mentioned in this review about steering input I found a bit strange, as my experience is completely different, I find the steering input to finally be on point again while it has been vague in the previous models. Perhaps it has to do with suspension and tires? Like whether you have adaptive suspension and whether or not you have run-flat tires? (For reference: mine is without run-flats and without adaptive, but with M-sport)

Nah, the 3 series is no longer the king of handling, that accolade now belongs to the alfa romeo giulia, the giulia handles like no other car I've driven, and I've had plenty of 3 series models in the past, the giulia leaves it in the dust in terms of handling, steering feel, connectivity to the driver, and the chassis is so subtle, it's in a class all of its own. Its a shame it wasn't included with the German trio for comparison.

For my money the Audi has it, best all-rounder and user interface - as long as i can have that heated steering wheel option in the UK! Although the actual steering wheel comfort looks may-not be great as it looks hard - not enough reviewers talk about the comfort of steering wheels even though that is the main touch-point of the vehicle. MY last fave steering wheel is the previous-gen BMW M-Sport wheel as it has a most full round cross-section rim (not oval), perfect diameter size and was supple with smooth tactile feel.
But i digress... yes the A4 for me but in estate form. The Merc has too much interior bling and the BMW over-priced with a cheaper sense of build quality and confused design & ergonomic sense.

As a matter of fact, many companies copied Audi's interior approach wih large screen placed on the dash, manual buttons for A/C control, digital cockpit set-up etc. Just look at all the modern asian or non-German European car brands. They all now do what Audi thought in 2014.

@@spk8989pl As he talked about in the review, you definitely feel more of the road in the 3 series. When you want to drive in a more sporting manner, that's great, but when you're just cruising down the highway, I'd like a slightly smoother ride.
Coming from a full size pickup, it is a dramatic difference and unfair to really compare. Prior to that, I did have a VW GTI. I wish I could more directly compare to that car, but it has been a handful of years.

But I have that iDrive drift thing too, everyone I know with iDrive 8 has it and BMW isn’t doing anything about it. It’s crazy.

Great review as always Thomas. We took delivery of an Audi A4 Avant 40tfsi in November. Love the car. Very comfortable even on S Line suspension. The only criticisms are in front wheel drive spec there is a lot of tyre scrab on damp roads...this may be due to the Hankook tyres though and the reversing lights are very poor as is the reversing camera at night. Otherwise love driving it. Didn't consider a 3 series and the C class was more expensive and had much longer delivery times in the UK.. previous car was a 2015 C Class. Keep up the great work Thomas! 👍

You don't that much power to be driving in like a racecar and then to top it off, their M sport suspension (non adaptive) is the stiffest I have ever driven. Definetly would pick either C class or A4. Atleast they all look great exterior wise!

I've heard from a lot of people (Including the "Chasing car" channel on youtube), that the c200 is much better than the c300. What is your opinion on this @Thomas? - They argue that the c300 is quite jerky, you don't notice the power difference that much, but you do notice the price difference, and it doesnt feel like its worth the more money.
Personally I still think I'd rather go for the c300, for some reason. Maybe their marketing is working on me or something.

It's a shame BMW can't get their steering right. I personally prefer Mercedes' steering the way they did it in the W205 generation. It may sacrifice feeling all so slightly, but it is much better weighted and easier to dose correctly than BMW's mushy comfort mode and artificially heavy sports mode. Seating wise, everyone should test this personally. I found BMW's sports seats to simply be too narrow for my legs, making them uncomfortable. Audi usually has several options anyway, and those of Mercedes are great allround.
It's a shame Mercedes didn't deliver an AMG-line specced version. Also I'd love to have seen a regular 3-Series be tested with their regular suspension. I think it might make for a much better competitor to the C-Class when the shoehorned sportiness is dropped.
Would I have to pick a car right now, I'd definitely check the Audi. Whilst it hasn't been updated in a long time, at least its ergonomics have not been downgraded for the sake of being more "modern". Thanks again for the great overview Thomas!
