  • I've had some comments on social media lately about how expensive it can be to sew your own wardrobe. And it can be. But it doesn't have to be. We have to look at the big picture. If you are sewing a quality garment that will last for years longer than a cheap ready to wear garment, well then even if you spent a little more on fabric in the long run that garment was less expensive. It's all how you look at it. But even so, we all need to be budget conscious so lets look at 15 ways to save money when sewing.

Thank you for suggesting we don't buy plus size clothing in thrift shops in order to use the fabric for our own clothing! I'm not plus size myself, but it's a point many 'refashioners' choose to ignore.

I am a plus-size person and when I buy a garment that I like and that fits, I tend to keep it a very long time. As a result, by the time I am ready to be done with a garment, it is often not suitable for donation anymore. This is one reason that there are fewer plus-size garments in thrift shops, I think. I appreciate you making people aware of this.

I've been fabric hunting, and I got decent amount of fabric from two retired seamstresses. I'm looking forward to rummaging through garage sales when the weather gets warmer. Although, you are right, that I got this bulk boxes of fabric from the one lady, and there is a significant amount of curtain material, that I just cannot use, and will have to sell. I'm so glad I found your channel, your videos have been very useful and informative.

Thank you so much for the comment about not thrifting plus-size clothes, just because you can. As a plus-size person, I would love to be able to find clothes in a charity shop that fit me.

So true, my buget for clothes is in of for second hand or fast fashion. Now i spend that on my material but and up with bespoke garments. So i can save my money long in of to buy better materials...i have a me made pair of trousers for 8 years its stil perfect. Im 10kg havier so i now have to alter it, but its so worth it.
And if you have your own style and colour palette you can built on your wardrobe every season. And like a capsule wadrobe pattern set. In need of trousers you have 1 go to pattern for that so you know it fit and the sewing gets easier every time you make it. And than if you want a special occasion dress or jacket you can hack your pattern or buy a pattern. I realy love your new series🥰. Its information that makes my heart sing. Thank you so mutch for sharing 💗

Thanks so much! And you are right, one you get a pattern tweaked to fit just right, that's a whole load of work you don't have to do next time. It does get easier and easier❤️

Since I’ve recently returned to sewing AND found sewers on RUclips, I’m disconcerted by the amount of garments being made. I understand sewing as a hobby (I’ve caught the bug) but how many garments can one body wear??

I found the same thing! I couldn't believe when I saw that wearing a garment for 30 times was a trending idea lol. I wear my clothes for years, I wear them, mend them then wear them till they fall apart.

maybe i missed it, but do you have a video about where you shop for sustainable fabrics? (fellow albertan here, always looking for new fabric sources!)

You know what, I haven't made a video on that but it's a good idea! I'll add that to my cue. But for right now my favorites are blackbird fabrics. They have a section for eco fabrics. As well as fabcycle. They sell dead stock which helps keep unused textiles out of landfills and they often have eco friendly options though they don't often know for sure the certifications to go with them.

From experience, you pay for what you get...
Fast fashion, is not made to last. I have bought clothing, and after three or four washes, the product is falling apart and I am repairing it.
When making your own wardrobe, you do know what you are getting. You can design and tailor to your actual size and what you are comfortable in.... You don't have to settle for what you can get in the world of fast fashion.

What is the Indie pattern company for T-shirt and what fabric do you use?

I used the green style creations tee but I'm not sure if it's still being offered for free. I've used all Jersey fabric. I've done cotton, linen, and wool jerseys
