DIY 2015 Subaru Forester A/C Clutch Repair Fast and Easy

- Simple fix for common intermittent A/C issue on Subaru Forester. My car is a 2015, however this applies to several years and models.
The center bolt is removed with a 10mm socket.
The correct clearance is between .3 and .6 mm. Anything over .6 can cause slippage and the compressor with stop. Under .3 can lead to clutch failure.
I recommend watching this video for a more in depth procedure.

I followed this exactly. Removed one shim. And my ac immediately went back to functioning. Great post!!
Fixed my daughter's 2015 Forester thanks to this video. It would be fine for a while, then the clutch would disengage and not engage again until after engine shut down. My guess is that the clutch gap expanded with temperature, then was OK after cooling off. Removing the skinniest shim seems to have fixed it. You can borrow a clutch holder tool for free at Auto Zone.
Amazed that this fixed my issue. Great post. I ended up using needle nose pliers to get the washer out after struggling to try to fish it out. Highly recommend that method if you have a pair
I used a dental pick and forceps, but your way works too.
Wanted to drop a quick thank you!! $16 at Harbor Freight for feeler gauges and a chain clamp and my 2015 Forester is blowing cold air consistently again. Saved me a fortune on a new compressor.
What section in HF did you find the chain clamp? Been looking everywhere for one

Thank you so much for posting this video! I have driven around a 2015 Subaru for 2 years with AC that didn’t work when the outside temperature is over 75 degrees, and I’ve taken the car to several mechanics who didn’t know how to fix it. Your video helped me to finally fix the problem, thank you very much for sharing!
You've earned my utmost respect. Fixed a 2 year ordeal calculated at hundreds of dollars for only $15.99 at Harbor Freight. Thanks man.
can you give me the of it pleases

Dude excellent video, saved me thousands and didn't need to buy AC clutch too. Thank you!
Thank you! 10 minutes and $16 to fix my 2015 Subaru Forester.
My Forester is from 2018. The identical A/C problem started a month ago (after 71000 km). Thank you very much for the top video and the very good solution proposal.
Thanks so much guy!
thank you for the video dude... just fixed my jacked up a/c for $10. that's how much a chain clamp cost me at Harbor Freight. the gap was .8mm. removed 1 washer and now its ice cold non-stop...
Awesome! So glad to help!
Wow dude What an amazing video. I just removed the medium size washer and the clutch doesn’t seem to slip anymore. Hopefully it fix that issue. Thanks again!
You said you removed the "medium size" washer. How many washers were installed initially? The OP's vehicle had 2, but he said he's seen 3 in another video.
What year is your Subaru?
This worked like a charm. Thank you for saving me a bunch of money and headache!
That’s awesome!
Your chain wrench idea is great ! (I'm buying one) Other ways to hold the clutch face need complicated tools.
Glad to help!
Greatest video..no more driving and sweating my ass off...any other tips?...
What was the final gap
That chain clamp is great idea
Oh wait I thought you made that- was like damn that’s redneck ingenuity 100%
It's an electromagnetic clutch, you definitely don't want to put lube on those.
great video! do you know what the gap in the clutch should be?
Do you have to torque the nut down to anything specific?
2024 and this still works exactly like I needed. Thanks!
Thanks for the tip man. How can you tell if the whole compressor has gone bad or just the clutch?
Hey sorry for the late reply, did you figure it out? I don’t do a lot of A/C work but this fix was so easy I had to share it. There are several parts involved In the whole system. If the gap is within spec it’s gonna get more complex, I don’t think you can even buy a clutch without replacing the whole compressor unfortunately. Then there’s refrigerant leaks and the whole 9… best of luck
Can't pick up the feeler gauge clearance measurment
