  • So far we've covered the terminology of BFM and the offensive portion of a dogfight. But what about when things aren't going so well. The USAF has a way of teaching what to do when a fighter pilot is in a defensive position. We'll go over the first exercise for Defensive BFM in this video.

Question - How do you develop the mental picture of what 6000 ft.(1.1 miles) looks like if you or the people you're "training" with don't have a mental picture of it to begin with?
Solid video and great information. I just need to get an understanding of how to determined the distance in the simulation world of DCS.

This is a great question. One of the reasons why we have the offensive fighter call "Fight's On" is because that pilot is in the best position to identify proper range. We have a few options to do that:
      1. Stadiametric ranging (ie using parts of the gun sight; See link below for more details)
      2. Air-to-Air TACAN
      3. Visual cues (ie when certain features of the other jet disappear)
You can of course turn on DCS in-game labels too. Using one of those methods you should be able to get "Fight's On" range nailed every time. Then the defensive fighter can start work on memorizing that picture without any of those assists.
I hope that all made sense.
My Heat-To-Guns video explains stadiametric range estimation at about the halfway mark:

@@TheOpsCenterByMikeSolyom Thanks for answering. To be honest, I knew the answers thanks to my USAF days. I just knew that there was an opportunity to fill a knowledge gap that the video may have shined a light on. As it was your presentation, I figured I'd give you the honor to expand rather than me jumping in on your podium.
I enjoy watching your content and often share it with new DCS pilots I "fly" with.
You do the DCS community a great service. 🏆
Also, a little conversation to expand helps with the youtube algorithms and giving your channel boost. 😉
