As a Canadian who is aware of the reputation of Americans as strong, outspoken, who want things done their way understand that a dictatorship will cater to the rich, and the other 90% will be told how things will run with no ability to express their dissatisfaction. Protests and push back to the government are not allowed in dictatorships.

We got to this point in time with trump because he was not locked away over Jan 6th. Dictatorship does away with all rights, all of which the dictator decides on to benefit themself and their appointees, as long as they tow the line.

If Trump was a dictator, why didn’t he take over the country in his first term? He had Covid as an excuse to with executive orders. Biden used executive orders to shut down the country for over a year. And fired government employees who decided not to get the vaccine. But Trump is the dictator.

Sad that most of us US citizens aren't protective enough of democracy that we stand up to authoritarian fascist candidates. Glad to see that the German people haven't given up on democracy like so many here have.
Democracy is a lot of work. I always thought those “freedom isn’t free” stickers were so dumb and simplistic. Now, I see that statement so differently. It IS NOT FREE. It’s work. Boring work. I think most soldiers would tell you it’s a boring job most of the time. I think that most managers would say the same, boring and challenging to manage people. And that’s what we the people have to do- elect folks AND THEN FOLLOW UP. Check on them. Read the fine print. How did they vote? What do we think? Keep asking questions always. Oh, and work a 40+ hr week, raise your kids, and sustain your personal relationships as best you can.

Having to work too many hours for not enough pay with constantly rising prices so that all the voters efforts have to go towards not starving and becoming homeless isn't an accident. These things are done on purpose to ensure that most of the population doesn't have the time or energy to really understand politics and what the parties and candidates stand for. That is why American politics are consumed by only two parties, neither of which represent the will or desires of over 70% of the population. The vast majority of American voters have been trained to vote out of fear rather than their own interests.
Democracy means you have to be willing to lose sometimes. For it to be the other parties turn. Right now there are those that see an opportunity to have their way for an untold amount of time, but with no real understanding as to what that means. Blinded by false promises.

I can tell you my investment portfolio did well from 2016-2021, except for the covid dip. Not so well from 2022-2023. Other than that, the biggest difference was covid.
A poorly educated population is key - enough education to function, but not enough to think for themselves - ripe for manipulation. That's a large section of the US.

Well more could be said about Hungary's inflation last year was over 25% and any reporter that wanted to write about it was thrown in prison . Their horribly slow response to the deadly earth quakes and never ending red tape preventing other countries responding quickly caused the death of thousands of people . He wouldn't approve an EU aid package to Ukraine unless he was paid 85 million dollars ( bribe ) to make up for his poor governing programs in Hungary .

The reason many Germans protested is: education. The people at those nationwide protests mostly didn't live through the horrors of fascism or WW2. They are too young for that. They learned about those things in school, in great detail. Critical thinking is encouraged and these protests are a result of that.

We are going backwards ‘societally’ Thank you both. I’m Belgian, our far right is higher then it actually is, because we have a very strong Flemish movement that want an independent flanders. And a lot of them vote extreme right because they also seek that. We still have pretty high extreme right people, but due to the Flemish independent movement voting on the same party, it’s higher then it should be… But look at Walloon region. Far right is virtually non existent there…
And Slovakia, and Israel, and Czech Republic, and Italy, and...everywhere there is democracy, the far right has grown to some degree in the last few decades. Especially in Europe, for some reason you guys have borrowed way too much of the reactionary, anti-woke culture war BS from the US. But bigger than that, unlike the Germans, we have a huge crisis around lack of trust and a lack of understanding. This is what put Trump where he is. German people at least seem to trust their democratic institutions more than most people, certainly more than Americans. They also have a better understanding of populism and how democracy is always vulnerable.

Yes, it's because the amount of inhabitants from very poor countries has reached a strong majority there, native Dutch are a rarity. The buildings of the Dutch former glory are still standing but the inhabitants are gone. If you would speak to average native Dutch in those cities, they will tell you this precisely .

I went to Hungary last year. Budapest is gorgeous. But after a couple days, you see beyond the veneer, it is a very undesirable society. There is a lot of crime and exploitation. It’s a Biff paradise, where the Rich live opulent, carefree, lives above the law and accountability. And everyone else toils to serve them. Not a model country to aspire for, unless you’re someone like Trump.

First of all, Hungary is a country of less than 10 million people. How can anyone arrive at reasonable assessments and conclusions about America by comparing Hungary with the United States? Based on a recent study of the top 25 countries in the world for quality of life - the U.S. ranks 5th in the world and Hungary is nowhere to be found on that list! One interesting fact to be noted - Hungary has universal healthcare for its citizens and the United States has none; and Victor Orban had nothing to do with that happenstance, but as far as I know, he has never tried to repeal and replace Hungary's healthcare system as Trump tried to do with Obamacare.
