I am a CNA in Michigan, and doing my prerequisites at a community college. Working at the bedside does make me reconsider nursing as a profession. I may become an RT but with nursing it’s so many opportunities.
I work in a LTC and my gosh the lack of teamwork is overwhelming. It’s becoming the hunger games! I’ve always helped coworkers but it seems like they take advantage of it because it’s like I’m the Go-To person. Go ask your other peers! Then they look at you crazy when you say No. I’m all for helping, however I’ll help you after I get my job done first.

It’s so hard for good CNAs, the nurses are apprehensive to ask the mean or disrespectful ones to do their job but will work the goods one to the ground. There’s a lot of tension in healthcare, I think the C-19 took a fragile system and made it worst because now most places I go to in LTC do not have any regular staff. The lack of teamwork is so real, but when you work together the work isn’t that hard.
I think if you look at the whole of nursing there are alot of options outside of bedside or outside of very stressful bedside nursing. If RTs are in demand in your area I say look into that too, like you said or try to talk to one to see what it’s like getting a job (try fb groups) rad techs are a good route as well.
It’s a hard decision because you want to know that all that schooling isn’t going to be wasted but there is more you can do in nursing and you know the demand is there. Also, there are plenty of nurses that love what they do and have found facilities that they can call home…I’m still looking for that after 9 years lol but really it is possible.

I was going to work until age 62 years, but I retired after 38 years at the bedside at 60 years old because the new CNA and RN's do the very minimal and I saw myself reminding them to do their jobs, patient's bedside clutter, no water at the bedside. No sense of team work nor proactive to work as a team. My recommendation is write them up. Write incidents reports on those who are not doing their job. This is the only way they will be discipline. I think the stress of being a CNA is very stressful. I think nurses are burnout and stressed out as well. Most CNA would probably stay a CNA if their pay was much better but the pay is not paying. The workload is too much at times having too many patients at one time. It is very hard to take care of 20 to 30 patients at a time that causes burnout of CNA. Some nurses treat the Tech like it is their personal assistant some nurses do not help so it makes it hard for CNA to want to really give care just like nurses. These hospitals are the blame because they cut back on having enough CNA to cover the shifts. Therefore it makes it hard for nurses and CNA. I don’t like the attitude either, but technically nurses are responsible for same jobs as the cna. It’s a lot taking care of maybe 20-30 maybe more in nursing home or 15 in a hospital setting. If all the cnas quit the nurses would literally have to do it all then there would be no nurses. Cna’s already not paid enough for all the tasks they expect you to do. Maybe they should do away with cna altogether because the nurse/cna divide is draining.

All Nurses need to be a CNA first in my opinion. Most nurses only have book smarts but no bedside patient care knowledge which they should in order to work as a team to provide the proper care for patients. I get they have a lot of other work such as passing meds and ect however it’s everyone’s job to provide patient care. Nurses become nurses and feel like they don’t have to clean up a patient or even pass a water to them. It’s the total medical teams job. This is the reason why CNAs are burnt out and have these attitudes in my opinion bc you work your behind off with no good monetary compensation or help from your nursing staff. I’ve been there done that and decided to get a degree away from patient care bc of the lack of team work between nurses and CNAs. This is why there is very poor patient care around the world.

Overall I wish people treat their patients as if they were their family members. Its just not in patient care, its on the back end also. I worked in medical records, the calls I would receive on the weekend from nurses requesting patients records and not receiving them during the week is insane. It made me upset, because How are these nurses and doctors suppose to treat patients with no knowledge of whats going on. I was the only person working on the weekend, compared to 30 people working during the week.

I think you are working at the worst places, because I'm at a facility with basically no agency except nurses rarely.
The difference between that and other places I've worked is night and day. Its because this place is actually run well and most of this stuff doesn't happen there.
At other places I've worked CNAs were just not answering lights, and threatening nurses etc. Behavior that no other job in any other industry would tolerate. It's shocking.
