Hi Susie! Agreed. I love cookin with bacon grease any opportunity I can get! I know it’s not healthy but I come from a country family and if your gonna cook great tastin food you gotta do it right. If cholesterol kills me I figure, oh well, at least I I go happy with mom and grammy’s food I learned to cook since I was 8 or 10 at their side. Lol 😋
It’s been more than ten years since I made potato cakes and I made them this week. Try frying a couple of eggs and serve them over the potato cakes. YUUUMMM!!
Potato cakes! I couldn't believe my eyes! These truly take me back to my childhood. We called then "tayda cakes" and ate them with a fried egg on top for breakfast. Thank you for this video.❤
Being of Scottish descent , I have a Bobbie Burns Dinner in mid January every year for my family. I really like to serve mashed taters and neaps ( turnips ) loaded with sweet unsalted butter !! We serve a roast of lamb too.
My Daddy used to make these. Coming from a family of 8 children he said no food was wasted, IF any leftovers at all. They are good, made just like yours.
My Japanese mama made some like these but they add cooked ground beef To the MiX and use flour, egg wash and. Then panKo bread crumbs. We make them and let sit in frig for 20 mins. Before frying! They are called KARROKES. PRONOUNCED KA ROW KAES. I MiSS MY MAMA SHE WAS 76 AND HAS BEEN GONE SINCE 8.2009.. HOPE YOU AND CHRIS HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND! KATHY FROM CALIFORNIA! ❤

two years later - one hurricane gone by - love watching you cook - making these potato cakes tomorrow with bratwurst and onions - I am in Amelia Island - your neighbor! Sandy
I was taught to spread a little bit of oil on the inside and up the sides and put it in the oven @ 350° and bake it for about 30 minutes. I notice yours has that georgous nonstick sheen to it. Oh yea, I love potato cakes and yours looks delicious 😋.
My mom took the leftover mashed potatoes, one bowl of a beaten egg, one bowl of bread crumbs. She would shape the potatoes like a football . Sometimes she would add some shredded mozzarella. Roll the little football in the egg mixture, then coat it in the bread crumbs & the rest exactly like you .Same iron skillet. Yum. Yours look yummy💙 Thanks for sharing💕
I LOVE rutabagas! Coming from Texas to Florida, I had never had any. But when I moved here, my neighbor cooked some for me and WOW! Love them! Reminds me of a turnip - which we DO have in Texas!!!! You care for your cast iron exactly how I care for mine - which I use about every day! Many of my pieces were my Mama’s. Sending hugs and Blessings!
My grandmama used to make these, usually for breakfast if i recall correctly, exactly the way you make them, sometimes she would put a little bit of sage in hers too. These are so good! She also did this with leftover pinto beans, she would do a rough mash on them, and then add the rest of her ingredients. Thank you for sharing this with us.
I tried it with leftover sweet potatoes after Thanksgiving, my kids loved them and they normally wont eat sweet potatoes. We put sour cream and cheese in them. I use a combo of butter and bacon grease. We dip them in a bit of homemade applesauce YUM.
Mom made potato cakes. She used the same recipe you do. With 10 of us kids potato cakes were an affordable thing to make. She purposely made extra potatoes so she could make these. They are so good when they're real crispy. I ate them with ketchup! I love your cooking show!!!
Kathie here....raw/ crunchy onions don’t agree with me so I sauté mine in butter before I add them to a n y t h I n g! Also, try these fried mashed potatoes with finely chopped green onion tops (to your liking) and cracked pepper...these onions I don’t sauté first.
